If you observe Good Friday...
« on: March 21, 2008, 05:21:54 AM »
Then I hope you have a good one. I am not working today, so I get to go to a noon service.  If I can find one.  My church won't have one this year.

If you think about it, Good Friday is really the most important day for Christians.  It is finished.   smiley

I was at our Maundy Thursday service last evening, and will be at a public/community stations of the cross multidenominational service in a city park today beginning at 1:00.

FWIW, Catholic churches almost always have Good Friday services, if you don't mind going there.

And why do you have my name in your avatar?  You now owe me a $5.00 royalty each time it appears.

Fistful

You may find a Good Friday Catholic Mass interestng, very somber and reflectful of the day, it will be a long mass due to the stations of the cross.

Not quite. No Mass on Good Friday. There is an adoration of the cross/prayer service of the Church on Good Friday, but no Mass. The service is most definitely not a Mass.

Oh, I KNEW I could find one at a Catholic church.   smiley

Thankfully, I managed to find one at a Lutheran church, which was very good.  I'd probably get bored with a regular liturgy, but it's OK every once in a while.  Quite nice, in fact.

I was surprised how many places I looked, that didn't have a noon service.  My church had them a few years ago, but no one came last year, so it was canceled this time.  That fancy-pants, high-church conservative Presbyterian place didn't have one.  Neither did the two Baptist churches I looked up.  Nor did some of the Lutheran churches I looked at (and they were Missouri synod, which tends to be more conservative).  I found one at an Anglican cathedral, but I think it was kind of far.  Besides, they had the phrase "social justice" on their website.  And that's always a bad sign.   smiley

Riley, sounds like you're having a Good Friday.  Does it really bother you that I put your name up there?  If so, I'll remove it right away.  I won't leave it up too long, anyway.

Don't you have any good wishes for those who actually participate, rather than just sit back and observe? Wink

 Sorry... couldn't resist.

Hope all you heathens enjoy celebrating the major event of your faith!

Funny you should say that, Strings.  The preacher did spend a little time reminding us that we all participated in crucifying the Christ.

Sorry to get all serious and spiritual on ya.   smiley

Went to the 1:00 Good Friday service at my church - Wisconsin Synod.  (Which makes me wonder about calling Missouri Synod "conservative")

Kinda weird having this big snowstorm on Good Friday, though.  I don't ever remember a Good Friday blizzard up in these parts as a kid...

Yeah, that's what I've heard.  But you've got to admit, it's no ELCA.   smiley

No problem with you getting all serious: this IS the major event your faith is based on. Just had to pop that lil' bit of word play.

Thanks, Strings. This Heathen plans to have a bit of ham, in lieu of the traditional roast boar.
I'll raise a horn for ya, though....

See, you have to be specific which heathens you mean... laugh

Really, though, happy Good Friday, Ostara, whatever y'all are celebrating.

And I wish a happy weekend to our atheist friends, as well!

And remember, use paper easter grass for baskets. Pets can eat the plastic stuff and that's bad.

Except the ones we select for our annual Passion Play.  We could crucify church members, but that would cut into the revenue.  And we'd have to give them Christian burials.  Atheists, one can simply cremate.

You can always tell the churches that have military re-enactors in them.

The Roman soldiers have REAL lorica segmentata, real gladius swords, red tunics, proper sandals, and mirror-polished helmets, and they march in perfect step.  cheesy

If you don't have fixed doctrine, how can we be heathens in your eyes?

Huh?  Huh?

Sounds like you're some orthodox tyrant, time for a "pagan reformation".  grin

I nominate Fjolnirsson as Martin Luther, though I suspect the Nordic types wouldn't be nailing their Thesis to a door.

In all seriousness, Happy Easter to all.  He is risen indeed.

And happy every other "similarly dated holiday" to everyone else.  grin
