Over the last few years I had taken up horseback riding but have found that all the jarring is tough on my various back and knee problems. I hate the idea of giving it up but sometimes after a good ride I'm feeling a bit lame for a couple of days. I guess I just empathize with your grandfather because I know a little of what he was going through. They say that even a lifetime of horsemanship like his is still not long enough to understand them completely. Interesting creatures.

Thanks to all for the contributions.

I don't remember the actual depths of the Depression, but I sure remember its effects on my family and me.  One is that I've never really been "eat up with the I-wants".

somewhere I got stuck with my father's notion:  Never buy a (boat/race car/airplane) except with money you could throw over the back fence and it wouldn't affect your standard of living.

i've been well-off, and I've been broke.  Well-off is better.  "Paid for" is a wonderful phrase.

But, I've never seen a Brink's truck in a funeral procession...
