Title: Men: Would you prefer to marry a virgin woman?

Why the hell would I do that? I don't even buy a car without a test drive first.

Same from me.  Gotta make sure everything fits and works correctly.

Thirty-something years ago, yes.  If I were to remarry (wife dies or something), I'm not a virgin anymore and I wouldn't expect her to be either.

No, I would rather that she not wonder what it would be like with someone else. Granted, I don't want a woman who has been "rode hard and put up wet (https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-origin-of-the-phrase-rode-hard-and-put-away-wet)" either!  :old:

1) A woman is NOT a car.
2) Sex is learned. It gets better over time. As you stay together longer and longer, you learn what you and they like and you adapt. If you can't tell from dating if they are compatible with your ways or at least willing to meet half way, DON'T MARRY THEM!
3) Once the "new" wears off, are you still happy with your new "toy?" That Ferrari might be a ball to play with but that expensive maintenance and rough, sporty, ride gets old when you need something to live with daily. Do you want a toy or something to keep "until death do you part?"

Well hell, since you put it that way I guess I would go with the toy, I can at least change it up every few years if needed. ;)  :P

Nothing like being married when you find out you're not compatible in that way and you lose interest and then take all the blame.

Take the advice or don't. No skin off my nose either way. My 1st marriage lasted a whole year, and that was a little over a year too damn long. My second marriage has lasted 38 years and is still going. I must have learned something along the way.  ;)

Note that I voted "No." I figure that 99.999% will have sex with their chosen bride before the marriage and will find out if the other isn't into sex, has some strange fetish, of can't get off unless you wear a chicken costume. I just don't care for the "car" analogy for the reasons I've already stated.

(my wife is now sitting next to me squawking like a damned chicken and laughing her cloaca off)

No, for a variety of reasons.

Not sure why, outside of religious proscriptions, one would want one.

Clarification: I'm not judging on the various religious proscriptions, I just don't share them.
Title: Re: Men: Would you prefer to marry a virgin woman?
Post by: zahc on July 25, 2018, 03:35:42 PM
Yes, of course. Why wouldn't one? Haven't virgins been highly prized for all of human history? When did this change?

Number of previous partners is only one parameter to be considered, and maybe it's not that important, but to the extent that it's worth considering, it's a monotonic function. If you can understand why 2 previous partners is better than 200, then you should be able to see why 0 is best.

Perhaps I'm ignorant but is there some Christian proscription on marrying non-virgins?

I'm 53 years old. IF I were to marry again, the chance of finding a virgin (unless I start prowling elementary, middle and possibly high schools), is pretty much non-existent.  Unless she is so far above the Hot-Crazy line, that no man was willing to endure that to get to the end zone, so to speak.

So my answer was no preference.

Never understood why a man would want a virgin on his wedding night anyway...

After all that waiting and she's going to go "Holy *expletive deleted*it! PAIN!! Get THAT THING OUT OF ME!!!"

(BTW, I may have skewed the results. Voted "no preference" so I could see the poll)

and the reason virginity was prized for centuries had nothing to do with quality and everything to do with paternity of children. Duh.

Well if they weren't banging the tavern wench how else were they supposed to have a steady supply of virgins?

That's also for breeding purposes. Shorter lifespans meant marry 'em off as soon as they could produce children so you could get as many kids out of one female as possible...

Often backfired though, since it results in higher rates of death from childbirth.

Damn you, HeroHog.  I've been waiting for years to craft a good pun with cloaca.

I voted no preference.  Doesn't make a vast difference.

(Go ahead ^.  You know you want to. :D )

However, regarding the poll question, isn't "virgin woman" a sort of contradiction in terms?

It wasn't hypothetical in my case.

Perhaps I'm ignorant but is there some Christian proscription on marrying non-virgins?

Strictly speaking, no. But...

The admonition against being unequally yoked is often interpreted to mean, among other things, that Christians should only marry believers. Believers are expected to reserve sex for marriage. So there's that.

Obviously, the Christian bride or groom may have had some, uh, experience from before they believed. Or may have strayed after.

So, no, there's no real proscription.

Do you expect a bunch of guys who have probably compromised on that issue to give you an honest answer?

Not too many men have a clapped out party girl as their ideal but in this day and age you take what you can get.

The longer you wait to get married the higher the percentage of available women you meet who’ve spent time on the cock carousel.

As was mentioned previously, I’m also too old to have that as an expectation in any potential mates. The best us old guys can hope for is finding someone who isn’t jaded from decades of being pumped and dumped.

Married a virgin. Haven't regretted it, in fact I have enjoyed being her first, best and only (as she has mine).

Yes, the first night was awkward, but we still made it work (several times)  =D

I'm considerably more cool with the idea when it's both parties going to the wedding night as (educated) virgins. My issue is when it's just the female that's expected to be "pure", which has been mostly the case for centuries, especially as "pure" often means completely ignorant of the ways things work as well as physically untouched.

Too many woman end up with really crappy ideas about sex and unsatisfactory sex lives largely due to the concept of "sexual purity".

We did a similar thing,  but in highschool, with an interlude of several years while she went to college and I joined the military.  Saw other people and did our own thing, ended up together happily in the end.

We weren't virgins on our wedding night, but we've only ever been with each other.

The idea you have find out if you're "sexually compatible" I think is mostly bunk.  Like I think HeroHog said, it's something you can and should learn over time together how to do to mutual satisfaction.  It's got to be a rather rare couple that can't make that happen if they actually want to and have otherwise gone into the marriage for the right reasons.  Most of the time when that fails there are much deeper issues not being addressed.

I saw this earlier.  I hope it is not offensive, but I guess it illustrates the priorities of a lot of young men.
Quote
"Bless me Father, for I have sinned. I have been with a loose girl."
The priest asks, "Is that you, little Joey Pagano?"
"Yes, Father, it is."
"And who was the girl you were with?"
"I can't tell you, Father. I don't want to ruin her reputation."
"Well, Joey, I'm sure to find out her name sooner or later so you may as well tell me now. Was it Tina Minetti?"
"I cannot say."
"Was it Teresa Mazzarelli?"
"I'll never tell."
"Was it Nina Capelli?"
"I'm sorry, but I cannot name her."
"Was it Cathy Piriano?"
"My lips are sealed."
"Was it Rosa DiAngelo, then?"
"Please, Father! I cannot tell you."
The priest sighs in frustration. "You're very tight lipped, and I admire that. But you've sinned and have to atone. You cannot be an altar boy now for 4 months. Now you go and behave yourself."
Joey walks back to his pew, and his friend Franco slides over and whispers, "What'd you get?"
"Four months vacation and five good leads..."

To be aware and observant is to flirt with being jaded.

I’ve certainly not been part of the solution.

Yet, neither do I kid myself with rationalizations of my past behaviors, nor have I adopted a morality/philosophy that excuses my past behaviors.

Strong marriages = strong families = strong communities = strong cities = strong states = a strong nation.

Men and women whoring around undermines the family, the foundational unit of a strong nation.

That's a knee-jerk reaction to a conservative viewpoint; not a reasoned response. Ron didn't say there was a Golden Age of chastity, purity, Greatness, and universal peace.

From the statistics I've heard about, rates of one-parent households (largely families abandoned by the father(s)) have risen to dizzying levels in black America, accompanied by many other negatives for that group. Hispanics are following closely behind them. The rates have gone up for whites, as well, if I recall correctly. Sure, you can point to signs of improvement (e.g., the crime rate has come back down). That doesn't mean there aren't consequences to the weakening of the family.

I'm somewhat surprised this has not been addressed in this thread:

The number of sexual partners a woman has had prior to marriage is positively related to the chances of her divorcing.

Once again, it seems the "traditional" ways of doing things may have had important reasons behind them...

The only reason I can think of for labeling these results "counterintuitive" is that the author hoped the result would be the opposite. To me the result doesn't seem at all counterintuitive.

No
No preference

Hypothetically, what is your preference?   ???

Something popped up a couple weeks back in social media I follow, to the effect that a man ought to prefer a virgin without tattoos or debt.  This question is from that?

Depends when in life you're at.  At 20, the filter lowers the chance of drama greatly.   At 60 the calculation is quite different.

I'm somewhat surprised this has not been addressed in this thread:

The number of sexual partners a woman has had prior to marriage is positively related to the chances of her divorcing.

Once again, it seems the "traditional" ways of doing things may have had important reasons behind them...
Which traditional ones, exactly? Because there's been a heck of a lot of cultural differences aside from just people likely to be virgins when they marry that could also easily be argued to go with that.
