This is one of those subjects I wonder about every decade or two, but never get around to questioning.

Leonard Nimoy has played the role of Mr. Spock, has narrated numerous documentaries, and played many other roles, nearly all of which played off his image as being especially intelligent.

I've always wondered if he was indeed ultra-bright, or if it was just part of his schtick, like James Garner playing nice guys.

IMO he is of average intelligence. He is an actor; the role of Spock was a alien; Vulcans were considered to be very intelligent in comparison to humans. Consider also that their culture was far older than ours. They were achieving worldwide peace, an advanced technology, while we were basically still cave men.
You don't have to have a Mensa card to play a role of a pointy eared intellectual, you only need good writers, wry delivery, and expressive eyebrows.

I know that much about Star Trek and Vulcans. I was just wondering if it was image or had anything of substance behind the image.

Not only can he not sing, he can't take a good photograph, either.

I have no idea if Nimoy is actually intelligent, but he's been a public figure for something close to 50 years now and hasn't done anything balls-dead stupid. And he didn't go broke.

That's got to put him above average, IMHO.

I will say one thing; comparing the Star Trek movie he directed vs. the one Shatner directed, I believe Nimoy is definantly the more talented of the two.
As far as singing ... he ain't no Pat Boone but compared to me he's a Sinatra.

Not necessarily, James woods is one of the smartest people in Hollywood, and he regularly does things we would classify as stupid...I mean, who couldn't see the coo-koo in Sean young's eyes from across a room?!

His singing isn't anything to write home about, either.

I don't know that he's ESPECIALLY intelligent. I think he's reasonably smart, above average - but he is not, in fact, Mr.-Spock-level smart. I have no hard evidence to support that belief, however.

So, is the question - did he score highly in math and science? What is your benchmark?

I'd consider anyone who succeeded in life, to the degree that he did, to be pretty bright. Is he a flawless robot like Spock? No.

I have or at least had a high IQ (147) in high school. That was book smarts. When it comes to the kind of smarts that make a person successful financially, I'm dumb as a box of rocks.

I don't regret not making more money, but I do regret not going on more adventures.

A lot of that "kind of smarts" is understanding people, which I never have. I went into business thinking people were like me, which they most definitely are not. :(
