Neither I nor the author suggesting hunting bear with 5.56.  All the author claimed was in documented cases, it worked for defense along with AK's.  I know people that have killed multiple wild hogs with 22 LR, but they wouldn't use that caliber if they were hunting them.

I've had too many guys come in looking to buy .22lr to go hog hunting.

It's hard to not tell them what I think of people who do that.

We can play this game forever. It is legal here to hunt deer with .25 ACP.
Sometimes we carry more weight then we owe.
And sometimes goes on and on and on.

If the goal is only to kill them, it will work (maybe not immediately).  If you intend to harvest meat you don't want them to run off a 100 yards and hide.  The people I know who shot them with 22 LR were shooting them in their yard or it was an opportunity shot out on a walk.

I have known one man who actively hunted them for meat (corn feeder and everything) and he used a lever gun in 44 magnum.

Most (all?) don't seem to be hunting for meat - they're killing varmints.  They haven't said so, but I get the impression they don't care if the hogs are DRT or if the hogs die 3 days later.
