A pic from Georgia...how did THIS happen?!
« on: August 16, 2008, 10:43:53 PM »
What the hell? Is that a tank turret?

If so, did it fly from elsewhere and fall through that building? O_o

I seem to remember from the first Gulf War that T54/5 had a habit of explosively losing their turrets, they did go quite a way up into the air... maybe thats what happened here.

Man it would suck to get killed by a falling tank turret.

You blow it up. It comes down. Gravity. that turret is a major portion of the overall weight of a approximately 40 ton tank. It would have a large amount of energy stored on the way down. It also looks to have hit on edge which would concentrate the energy into a small impact zone. I suspect it would have cut through much more concrete than what it struck. Sad part is some guy probably rode it in.

Yeah, but it beats roasting to death inside a burning tank.

History Channel has combat footage from WW II of a German tank (looks to be a Panther) getting creamed by a heavy anti-tank shell or some other device packing a LOT of explosive potential.

Pops the turret up into the air 30 or so feet and flips it over.

It makes sense that the turret would fly off.  The exploding shell or missile or whatever applies an enormous amount of pressure to the inside of the tank.  The body of the tank is essentially a giant sealed box, and the only path for the pressure to escape through is up through the turret.

It's a wonder the turrets don't fly off any farther than they do.

There's also a video somewhere of the unpleasantness of what I think was a "backflash" from the breech when a T-72 was being used in a re-enactment. You see a puff of smoke around all the hatches and turret base, then the top hatch opens suddenly, a guy climbs out amid the smoke, climb/falls off the tank, and then just sort of sits down in the grass, obviously not feeling very good. Poor guy. Lucky it didn't set off anything else in there though, I guess.

That Javelin shot was rather impressive.

Some of the Russian tank designs had some interesting "features".  For example, some had a fuel line that ran AROUND the base of the turret.  Also, those that had a mechanical loader instead of an actual person loading the shell into the gun, had a round sitting in the open on the loader to speed the reloading process.  Additionally, in order to save a little bit of space, they would actually store the ammo in slots inside the fuel tank.  Combine all those things, add either a sabot or HEAT round going through the base of a turret, and you've got a giant flaming jack-in-the-box.

Also, the loader was on the 'floor' of the tank, enabling mines that pierced the belly of the tank to touch off the ammo in the carousel. Lulz would then ensue.

I think it was during previous discussion here that it was unveiled that a particular model of Soviet autoloaders had a nasty habit of forcing the operator.... er... to hand-check the chamber, at least while that arm was attached.

Certainly if the tanks ammunition explodes inside the turret quite often goes skyward.

The sheer weight of a falling tank turret will crash through the average roof and concrete floors of a building. Thats alot of scrap metal.

They showed us a pic in a briefing during my deployment of an M1 that'd been hit with several tank mines stacked on top of each other. Turret came off and flew quite a long ways. So it's not just the commie tanks.

In some other reality, there is a mecha trebuchet that wanders the battlefield, flinging cast off tank parts at buildings

Those turrets are just set in there and held down by their own weight, aren't they? Didn't they figure the Bismark's turrets just floated off (so to speak) when it went down?

Tank turrets are generally held in place with retaining clips of some sort.

Turrets on warships are generally held in place by gravity.

What happened with Bismarck is that she did at least one roll going down and dropped her turrets.
