Title: Who really doesnt watch TV?
Post by: Wildalaska on March 03, 2005, 07:09:23 PM
I mean, I watch some sports hit a movie, the history channel...

but like I havent looked at a sitcom or one of the dramas of comedies or other  crap that pasees itself off as entertainement in god knows how long.

Maybe Im strange, but to me the quality of programming has deteriorated...even Discovery Channel is leaning left (and I'm a moderate)

Wonder how they make any money, or are the bulk of americans just TV wATCHING IDIOTS...

cOME ON CONFESS TV watechers..

I listen to tv more than I watch. It's all repeats, especially with cable tv. I devote much more time to the PC, reading or typing away on THR, generally  with reruns of police chases in the background, or the Military Channel.

Ok, I admit, I watch TV. I shouldn't have stopped by a local big screen dealer the other day. I think that I'm hooked on HDTV!!

Mmmmmmmmmmmm. Hi-Def.. Yummy!

I'm a T.V. whore...

Yep, I admit it.  But I'm none the worse for it, really.

Yes, a lot of what's on is stupid and senseless, but it can be very entertaining.

It is what you make of it.  For me it's nothing more than simple entertainment.; a break from reality.

True, though, that many Americans put too much belief, faith, what-have-you into television.

It it very rare that I watch TV.  I might catch some new on the TV at College while in the Student union. Mom usually has her TV when check on her.

I used my '79 model 13" Sony with Rabbit Ears to watch a movie , a video - usually something related to School or  Educational for me.

I dropped the TV and it broke. No plans to replace it any time soon.

Folks couldn't understand why I didn't pay for the TV when in the hospital, recovering at home...Commercials drive me nuts. More commercials than the actual show.

Even before my time was more filled than now attending College - I didn't watch it. I take IT classes, I use the computer and Internet for classes and everything else - including  communicating with folks.

I used to keep my phone ringer off too. Folks would email me to get off dial up ISP.  I don't really have a personal phone number now - so that little problem is even more less so.

I'd rather read, listen to the radio , music I like and use the PC and Internet.

Hardly ever.

If I hear of something I'd probably like a buy the DVD's and watch without ads a year or two after everybody else.

The RT thread on favorite Firefly episode sent me googling after Firefly - hadn't previously heard of it.

If my wife didn't turn on the TV in our house it would probably almost never get turned on.  The only TV that I watch is TV she  watches which really doesn't interest me....If I lived by myself I would probably catch a couple of hours a week mostly news weather and History or discovery channel.  If our TV quit I would be happy....

My interest seems to be fading.
First, I quit watching any of the major networks.
Then I quit watching any series -- didn't want to get locked to a schedule.
Then I only watched movies and occasional special events.

It just occurred to me that the only time I've had it on for the last 3 months was to watch a DVD.

Yet I got comcast -- I'm paying close to $90 a month for the "privilege" of extended basic TV plus a purty good computer hookup.

I may re-think my priorities and my economics over the next few months.

I don't watch a whole lot of network programing, 2.5 Men & According to Jim is about it.  We have a dish so Mythbusters, Reno 911, Discovery, History, etc do get watched.  Lately though it is just background noise while I'm cleaning up after dinner, or sitting at the computer getting stuff done (or goofing off at THR rolleyes ).

We do have Tivo (which I wholeheartedly recommend for anyone who does watch tv) which is nice as it allows us to watch what we want when we want to.  I never watch the shows during their "live" time slot.  This way I can just blast through the commercials & a half hour show only takes 20 min.  Plus I can pause if the dogs need to go out or the phone rings or nature calls.  The only downside is that I've gotten so used to it (or watching/listening to video/audio clips on the internet) that when I'm listening to the radio I often find myself reaching for the remote to rewind what was just said as I missed it the first time cheesy .

I hardly watch any television at all, in fact I haven't turned the set on for months. The only usage it sees is when my daughter comes over to visit. She's always asking me when I'm going to buy a larger set, because the one I have now is an old 12" color television. However as I've told her numerous times, I don't use one often enough to justify the cost. Besides, I find the living room less cluttered and my life more productive when I don't have a television.

I've got six kids and my wife and I decided about 2 years ago to ditch the T.V.  Too much sleaze and indoctrination that I couldn't control.  How could I ever raise close minded automotons with all of that outside influence?

We still own a 13" TV but we only use it for watching movies together as a family or for educational type viewing (we homeschool).  We don't have an antenna, dish, or cable.

I'm pretty regular about watching all three CSIs and Lost.  Other than that, I rarely watch TV.  I don't have cable or satellite.

If I'm at my parents' house or at the Inlaws' house, I'll watch History or Animal Planet, but I'm not buying cable just for those two stations.

Hello.  My name is Pebcac, and I watch too much TV.

CSI, Law & Order, Lost, Scrubs, and probably the new L&O: Trial by Jury.  I'll watch AFV and The Simpsons if I catch them, but I don't bother to record them on the DVR.  That's it for the broadcast networks.  I also like the History channel and so forth, and I'm really digging the HBO series The Wire--but I'm watching that on DVD.  I'm not about to pay for HBO every month.

I read a ton, too.  If I had to pick--TV or books--the tube would go bye-bye.

All I watch (if I remember that it is on) is Modern Marvels, Mail Call, and Mythbusters.  Thats it.  I may actually watch one of these a week.

I last paid for TV in late 2001/early 2002.  I was geting my MBA at the time & could not justify a cable bill.

We have rabbit ears and get one channel clearly, another sorta clearly, and the rest are snow.

My wife watches a little and the only thing I watch is "Extreme Home Makeovers" with my wife.  It is "This Old House" with an emotional hook.

I thought about re-hooking up the TV cable, but they want $40/mo for basic cable.  No way, hoser.

We do have broadband cable for the home network.  I can get my C-SPAN fix through that.

I watch TV.  I try to catch the local news at least once a day.  I probably watch CNN Headline News (or at least listen to it in the background) 10-20 minutes a day.  I like the SPEED channel and OUTDOOR channel (fortunately they are situated right next to each other).  I'll watch Aquateens and Family Guy if they're on when I'm hanging out close to my TV.

If I lived out in the country where I could just step out the back door and shoot something, I imagine I would watch TV a whole lot less.

The ballgame du jour if I am padding around the house doing chores.  Sometimes Fox news.  I have followed the Shield and Reno 911 (hilarious), but I do not get upset if I miss an episode.  Daytime TV if I am home sick and want to see people more miserable than me!

I live at the bottom of a big hill, so when I moved in I had to get cable just to see much of anything.  I justified it to myself that, at the very least, if I had to witness the end of the world, I could see it on C-SPAN and not the networks (and their silly commentary)&

Now isnt that a happy thought to end your Friday!!!  Just your little ray of sunshine.  Oh, wait, it is raining in Los Angeles again&

I hardly ever watch it. I hear it all the time though. Not actual TV programs but movies. My kids have a large collection of DVD's that they watch all the time. The worst part is that they will fixate on 1 or 2 and watch them over and over for 2 or 3 weeks. This week it's Mary Poppins and Alice in Wonderland. Gets to be somewhat mindnumbing at times.

My niece and nephew are the same way. My sister will buy a DVD at Wally World and her kids will watch that thing over and over and over for days on end. Mainly History Channel, Science Channel, South Park, Conan O'Brien, Myth Busters, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, What's New Scooby Doo, etc.

Sometimes I end up watching interesting shows that TiVo records on its own that I never would have watched otherwise.  I'm trying to cut back!

I watch some sports like boxing, kickboxing, auto racing (the entertaining kind like WRC not NASCAR...yawn!), football and I wish hockey. I probably only watch one of these maybe once or twice/month. I watch the History Channel only when I know something is on that I want to see, which doesn't seem to be as often as when I was in high school. The only show I've watched regularly in recent memory is the second half of "The Ultimate Fighter". It adds up to probably an average of 1 program every 2 weeks minus when I was watching TUF.

BUT...I'm a flim-o-phile. I own over 130 DVDs and I watch probably at least 3 movies per week on average either from my collection, with my Blockbuster movie pass, or at the theatre.

I used to watch a fair amount. I like movies a lot, so when we had cable I watched a lot of AMC (it's where I first learned of my love for the Death Wish movies....). Now I don't watch much. Fox doesn't come in great, so I rarely get to watch the Simpsons or King of the Hill.  That's OK though, because I really don't have time to watch it.

However, if I didn't have cable internet I might freak. I use it for quite a lot these days, between spending way too much time around here and THR, research, news and email....yeesh...

I find it interesting that so many people that don't watch T.V. much pay for what they do watch.  Really?  You almost never watch T.V. and pay $50 per month for cable?  That's a lot of ammo.

WA asked who REALLY doesn't watch T.V.  I don't think any of us don't watch T.V.  I, like many of you, watch T.V. very little.  I don't have T.V. in my house.  I did go to my father's house for the Super Bowl, that was the last time I watched T.V.

I really, really don't watch TV.

I never bought a TV after leaving home >30 yrs ago, even after getting married.  We home-schooled our daughters through 8th grade and they got along fine for years without a TV.

In 1990, someone gave us a TV, and since the Gulf War was happening at that time we used it a lot to watch the news for a while.  Even watched some of the "better" shows and old movies.  The kicker came when we were watching The Sound of Music one Sunday afternoon, and the commercials were about some awful R rated movie that was going to be on at 11pm.  Our girls were terrified because of course they only show the worst parts (nudity and violence) on the previews.  After that we put the thing in the closet and didn't bother to take it with us when we moved to MT.

A year or two ago, at the insistence of my wife and daughters, we did buy one of those TV/VCR single units.  We only use it to watch videos and we are starting to acquire a fair collection by getting the ones on sale for about $5.  I must admit a fondness for the old John Wayne movies and stuff like that Smiley  It is kind of nice to watch movies on long winter evenings and cold snowy days, but this time of year I would just rather do something outside instead.

We live way out in the hills so there is no TV reception at all and no cable service.  The only way we could get it is with a satellite dish, which I have no desire to have.

I couldnt agree with you more Ken (did I just say I couldn't agree more with wildalaska? woah). Most TV, I find, is mindless crap. The only show I watch regularly is "24", and while many arguments could be made that it's mindless crap as well, I find it quite entertaining. If I have nothing else to do, you might find me watching the History Channel (my favorite channel in general), Food Network (Iron Chef, woohoo!), or Comedy Central (South Park, as dumb as it may appear, is quite funny-The creator is libertarian, and inserts insights into current issues in his shows). In general, though, I'm spending way too much time on the computer instead.

Who knew?  I used to go through phases.  Get fed up with the cr@p on TV and sell it.  2-3 years later, I'd miss it and buy another one (they were black & white, 12 inchers IIRC).  Then the cycle would repeat.

Until my daughter's 8th grade, we allowed TV only from tapes.  We home-schooled her and didn't want the TV undoing what we were trying to instill.  WE bought the tapes.

Now I have a 13 incher in my office and in the bedroom and a 25 incher in the LR.  I'll buy HDTV when they come down to $2-300.  I read the other day that the analog signal will be broadcast until around Dec '08 or Jan '09.  I'll worry then.

For awhile my GFs son had us fixed up with some cable and I liked the history channel and loved watching the Airplane Channel -- love watching footage of WWII fighters and bombers and sech-like.

But she stopped paying and I wasn't going to pay for TV.  So her son fixed us up with a roof antenna, wired to all the TVs in the house.  hardly anything I want to watch, though, except the 6:30pm news.  I like to swear at the TV, like my father did at the radio.

But she joined some DVD club for $9.95 month.  She chooses movies from a list, they mail them; she mails them back afterwards.

Yesterday I watched THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL and really enjoyed it.  They have old movies -- classics that the local Blockbusters don't.  I watched a few Steve McQueen movies, some Sam Peckinpah.  Got Straw-dogs on order.

Don't like much of todays stuff, though.  They're shot through with the cultural rot and they are the main transmitter.

I just don't like todays movies, TV or the culture they're embedded in.

Guess that makes me a dinosaur or a Dodo bird.

I'm a very happy one, though.

I put down the TV back in 2000. I don't miss it a bit.

My problem is when I have TV, I don't move from the couch. Literally, I know I want to do things, but I won't get up to do them.

Since I quit TV I'm much more active (reading, outdoors stuff, travel, etc).

I was going crazy for the first couple weeks, but you find things to do. I still find myself zoning out when I watch it at my families.

Don't have it.  Unplugged a while ago.

I do watch television on the treadmill at the gym.  They have those treadmills with the built in televisions--really cool.  I usually put on CNN or The Hitler, er, History Channel, or CMT (have you seen these C&W chicks like that Faith Hill chick.  Whoa!  I hate that alleged "music" but my goodness see her, that will get the heartrate going!!!).

My mother tapes "Closer to Home" and send it to me.  It's about this DPA in Indy.  She calls and asks me how accurate it is.  Yes, that's part of my exciting bachelor life.  My parents need to travel more!:D

My newest "gripe" about TV is - visiting someone and the TV is on in every room  - LOUD.  I came to vist, social interact, not get blasted off the front porch from TV blaring, inside it is worse.

My mom has turned into a remote control junkie - and thermostat tweaker.

Turn off that damn TV preacher you are sleeping to. I came to check on you or fix some piddly ass major catastrophe, like the batteries for the remote for the bedroom  TV are out.

I can mention it is 100*F and that night it is "supposed to cool off some".  That means with dual blaring TV Preachers you are supposed to turn the thermostate to heat.  Maybe you are supposed to scramble eggs on the kitchen table...I dunno.

I "was" going to visit with a classmate once, I had the notes, and the idea of studying was the reason for me being there. I left 5 minutes later. " You figure it out, here are the notes, I cannot hear myself think in here".

Explained why they always bitched about not having an outfit ready to wear, getting something cooked to eat before 11pm - meaning they felt bad, couldn't sleep, and had nothing to pack a lunch with the next day.

They knew all sorts of stuff like who was married to who in Hollywood, who was getting divorced, and other valuable bits of information.  Had no idea who Caesar was, only a history class...not important I guess.

Well... we HAVE a TV. It's hooked up to a VCR and DVD player (and it's in the bseent). We've lived in this house for going on three years now, and that TV has NEVER been hooked up to the outside world. We watch movies occassionally (and, if there's a show we want to see, we buy it on DVD). Last time the thing was even on was a few weeks ago when I was cleaning dowstairs...

Wow... I agree with the pink shoe guy... > : )

I like to watch certain shows, but I could live without TV if I had to. At the moment I tune in for:

Desperate Housewives, Seinfeld (unless baseball is on then I watch Sex in the City), Crossing Jordan, NCIS (haven't seen any of season 2 yet, dance class interfers), The Office, and 24.

There was an interesting program on PBS not long ago about Helen of Troy, and last night was a da Vinci show. They were building his hang glider and a huge crossbow. I like the shows where they build a trebuchet or catapult, usually in Scotland, and hurl stones at a wall.

Now talk about an ancient thread that is resurected.  Spiff and Wild Alaska have both since retired after starting this thread.  They sit in their rocking chairs and are watching reruns of Days of our Lives from the '60's  Tongue

I started watching a bit when I was sick.

One day I watched a show on the history of fasteners which was pretty interesting. I'm a nerd like that.

Barbara, are you sure watching it wasn't what made you sick?

Ahh, I don't watch much TV.  A little news now and again for comedy relief.  The weather channel to remind me that being cold in Michigan for 11 1/2 months is better than getting blown into the next county down south.  Once in a great while a sitcom so that I can see what people are doing in the real world.  And then a police procedural from time to time so I know that the Falcon of Justice still prevails.

I like to read and bloviate on the boards.  Then I squeeze a little politics in on the side.  Being active in one's community is fun when one has a sack of burrs that can be placed strategicaly in order to deflate a little ego and the puncture the cliquishness that happens in rural areas.

I gave away my long-unused television a couple years ago. I still haven't missed it for even a seventeenth of a skosh of a nanosecond.

Last winter when my van was being repaired, I watched Pimp My Ride a few times. What can I say? Smiley

Hardly ever.  Occasional movie or history channel special.  I do watch a higher volume of the ol' tube come winter and football though.

TV kills braincells faster than any substance know to man.  Reality tv?? Utter *expletive deleted*it.  I wanna kill braincells, i spend some quality time with my good friend Mr. Daniels

My College, as does most Colleges, have TVs in the Cafeteria. We have this Piped in something or another.

Talk about killing brain cells!!

All I want to do is get something to eat, visit. study with classmates, or use the computers in there. I can eat and drink while reading online texts in there, I cannot in the IT lab.

At my former college we had this as well. They also had - get this - some rooms down a hallway so instructors and students could watch Soap Operas.  Seriously, different rooms tuned to different ones. Folks actually arranged schedules around Soap Operas. Oh...they also had recorded various Reality shows in case you missed one.

I once "was" considering a particular instructor for a class. I was going to meet them and visit in regard to the following semester. When I found out they were in one of these rooms watching a soap...hence the reason they 'forgot' our scheduled meeting...

I chose another instructor and it worked out better - oh so much better.  Been nice to have had day classes as originally thought...night ones worked out to be serious instructors, and students, who understood the value of an education.

Smartest thing was changing Colleges.

Haven't had cable for just over three years now.  We bought a house and couldn't afford cable, now we could afford it if we wanted but we have turned into such cheapskates that I can't see paying $40 a month for something I've lived this long without.

Besides, using rabbit ears, I can get all the major networks plus PBS.  PBS is great, kinda like a poor man's Discovery/Animal Planet/History Channel.  I miss some of the more educational channels, miss CMT something fierce as it is great to have it playing in the background when helping out with the inside housework.  Most of the series I can't see I can get on DVD and we are seriously considering NetFlix so I can watch old seasons of The Shield and Deadwood.

We watch quite a bit of TV, but I am usually reading a book and hitting the MUTE button when commericals come on.  Really helps with my ADD.....lol.

We like most of the newer series........all three CSI-although New York is taking some getting used to and David Caruso is REALLy starting to get on my nerves, House is great just to see what he will do/say next, Lost is tied with Alias as my wife's favorite show, ER is a good fill in while folding laundry.  Fall weekends are college football time.  I actually sit down to watch while Alabama is playing, everybody else is background noise as are pro games on sunday.

Mrs. Stick and I will watch PBS a bit on Saturday. Rick Steves' travel shows are good, as are the Britcoms and Mystery! and she likes the cooking shows. One of my favorites though, is History Detectives. We all like This Old House. As for the rest of the network stuff, it can all go take a flying leap.

News makes Mrs. Stick look like Eddie from the Iron Maiden album covers, and she starts cussing at the set; scares Hell out of Stick Jr.

I do reccommend Netflix if you watch movies at all, or want to get some of the series.

On the nose, bra'!

We just read that review of B. Boxer's new novel (no stereotyping there, eh, Ms. Lefty?); she's desperately trying to prevent herself from putting a butcher knife through the monitor. shocked

Don't you just KNOW there's a member of Boxer's extended family that has views similar to ours, that REALLY wishes they could disavow the relationship?

Tell the Missus I said hi! She sounds a LOT like Spoon (who doesn't read much of the legal stuff here, because we can't afford a new moniter every week or so)...
