Tom Clancy Dead: Celebrated Thriller Author Dies At Age 66

Just saw it on the Fox News. I really enjoyed some of his books.

Loved "The Hunt for Red October". RIP Mr Clancy. You will be missed.

RIP.

Man, 66 - that's practically middle-aged. Anytime I read of someone dying earlier than 70 nowadays, it makes me think, "Crap, I might not have that much time left myself."

His newer ones lost me...very meh.

Personally I prefer Red Storm Rising* (my favorite), Hunt For Red October, No Remorse, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, and Rainbow Six. I do own most of his books except for Red Rabbit and the ones after that.

*Anybody know of any similar books covering the Cold war going hot that are written well? That was an engrossing book for sure.

I think the last book of his that I red was Red Rabbit or The Bear and teh Dragon.

I think a lot of his later stuff might have been written by other authors.

Thats what the suspicion is.

And then there were the tons of video game based novels that were openly written by somebody else

An oldie, and had a movie made from it; "Seven Days in May."  It was the kind of book Tom Clancy wished he could have authored. Might be possible to get through Amazon.

Ordered. New was $90+ but I got a gently used copy on the way from a place out in Kali. I love Amazon, makes finding used books easy, used it a lot and saved a bunch of money on my textbooks back in college.

Possibly my favorite book of his (and Larry Bonds). Very well written, very engaging, I can read it over and over and not get bored. Few books are that good for me.

Bestest book ever.

SWMBO snagged a couple of paperbacks that said Clancy, but he subbed out to other writers.

I even think that Eric Von Lustbader was one of them.

Tom Clancy, R.I.P. Had quite a few good reads thanks to you.

His newer ones lost me...very meh.

I'll also add to your list The Bear and the Dragon as a Clancy book that was a good read, as was Debt of Honor.

Similar books covering the Cold war going hot? Larry Bond wrote a number of good novels, but often overlooked is Harold Coyle's Team Yankee, about the experience of a US armored company dealing with an invasion of West Germany.

Read quite a bit of his stuff in the late '80s early '90s.
Watched Hunt For Red October for the 1st time while underway on a submarine. Now thats a tough audience for a submarine movie.

How accurate are his books? I've seen both opinions, from "lol, he doesn't know anything, but uses cool language to make it appear that he knows his stuff", to "WHY IS THIS SENSITIVE INFORMATION IN A NEW TOM CLANCY NOVEL?".

I can only speak to the submarine related content.
"Close, but no cigar" comes to mind. I can tell he talked to some folks in the know but to me it is obvious he hadn't actually "been there, done that".

Good author.  The key was that he obviously did a lot of research in preparing his stories.  Granted, not all of his writing was perfectly accurate.  But, so much of it was that you, as a reader, gave him a break when something wasn't right.  I remember reading in Clear and Present Danger when he said that 2" revolvers were no good past 10 feet.  I laughed because the closest I ever shoot for practice with my J frames is 21 feet, and more likely 30 feet.

That said, Clear and Present Danger and Without remorse were my two favorites.  I re-read Without remorse last summer.  Still great.

I always felt that the movies detoured too far from the books.  Let us not speak of the Clear and Present Danger movie which was an abomination.
