Belarus-Sweden teddy bear row escalates
« on: August 09, 2012, 08:45:15 AM »
Okay, I had to post this with the title of the article as the subject line. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-19176432
Evidently a Swedish public relations firm air dropped about 800 teddy bears on parachutes, contain pro-democracy messages.  Belarus has expelled all Swedish diplomats and closed its embassy in Stockholm.  The president of Belarus has fired his air defense chief and head of border guards.
Wow those wild and crazy Swedes.

I remember when, IIRC it was during the height of the cold war that a Swedish kid that flew a small plane into Russia and landed in Red Square.   The Soviets were not amused.

Maybe Belarus is embarassed at the exposure of their teddy bear gap.  =D

Seriously, I can see firing the air defense minister, but expelling Swedish diplomats and closing their embassy in Stockholm for unofficial actions take by private citizens - not the Swedish government - just makes them look silly.

Dictators ought to be tweaked vivisected every so often.

Maybe it stems from his very different Weltanschauung.  If you're a dictator you believe the government should exert significant control over the population.  If (going by this belief) a government fails to control its population as you believe they should, expelling the government is like kicking the parent out along with their poorly behaved child.

I don't remember reading anything about this. You sure you're not thinking about Mathias Rust, a German who landed a Cessna on the Red Square?
