I'd have much less issue with it if she'd at least had the dignity to assume room temperature before the government decided to deify her ass.

Giffords told a crowd at the ceremony in the Texas Gulf Coast city of Galveston that she was honored the 421-foot-long ship will carry her name and the vessel is "strong and tough, just like her crew."

"I thought of you in my darkest days, the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines of the United States of America ... You make me proud. You make America proud," Giffords said as she stood next to her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, who was in the Navy. Kelly lived in Galveston County when he was stationed at Johnson Space Center in suburban Houston during his NASA service.

Speakers including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, said Giffords' strength and courage made her worthy of being the namesake of the ship, the USS Gabrielle Giffords.

"Nothing gives me greater joy and honor than seeing this great ship named for someone whose strength and resilience is a great lesson to us all," Clinton said.

Others who attended the ceremony included House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, former Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden, who served as the ship's sponsor.

Nobody from the Navy? Nobody from the current administration? Just a bunch of has beens and never wases? I've seen more impressive lists of attendees for launching a dinghy.

I don't know what the "norm" is for christening a warship, but in this case it sure does seem dem heavy. Plus military hating (except when they're her taxi) Pelosi being there seems a bit of an anomaly.

From what I've read, it's more of a "SCUFFLEship" than a "WARship" as it wouldn't last long in a shooting war against anyone other than cave dwellers; limited firepower, undermanned, and fragile. (Haven't a couple of them actually had to be towed home when the engines broke?)

And I have a problem with naming ships, highways, buildings, or whatever after LIVING politicians of ANY party.

Hey Navy guys, what's the real purpose of these Littoral ships?   

I just read the Wiki article.  It says " The LCS main purpose is to take up operations such as patrolling, port visits, anti-piracy, and partnership-building exercises to free up high-end surface combatants for increased combat availability."  So, patrolling is a combat op, anti-piracy is a combat op (in theory).  Port visits and partnership-building exercises?  Sound like protocol/diplomacy missions.   No wonder it doesn't need much firepower...
