Damn POS- I need help with an issue w/ my laptop
« on: April 01, 2008, 05:39:35 AM »
Okay, running a Dell 6400 Inspiron here...with Windows XP...

Now, every time I connect to a wireless network, it emits a loud beep through the system speaker (I assume)- definitley not the regular speakers. It also does this at random other times, too. It's loud as hell and disruptive in class. Any ideas how to fix it? I turned off the system speaker in the hardware profiles, but this does no good.

Has it shut down on it's own at all? Could be the overheat warning

Oh, yeah- it does this even on cold startup. The temps feel fine- everything is cool underneath.

Yes.

I know an easy fix to make the sound go away.

Stop trying to connect to wireless networks.

Glad to be of assistance.

My work here is done.

Try going to Control Panel/ Sounds & Audio. Go to the Sounds tab and select 'No sounds' under the 'Sound Schemes' menu. That might fix it. If not, try an exorcism.

What caliber for testy laptops?
There are five things, above all else, that make life worth living: a good relationship with God, a good woman, good health, good friends, and a good cigar.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.  One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

If it's a Dell, maybe that means the battery is counting down to explode?

Why go to all the trouble installing it?  I can make you a boot disk.   laugh

When you computer starts up, hit the button to go into the BIOS (F2 , F10, DEL,  one of those, it varies)  and see if there is a setting for turning your PC Speaker off.  I've noticed some of the newer ones arent having that feature in the BIOS anymore though, so it might not be there.   Also, dont mess with the other settings while you are in there, some of those settings can be pretty touchy.

But do you have a boot CD? Lots of newer laptops have no floppy drive.

No new laptops have an ancient floppy drive that I know of.

You need to burn all the floppies.

You can't burn them!

I've already turned off the sounds from the sound properties menu in control panel- this beep isn't coming from the normal speakers, anywho.

Did a quick google for you, found this:

"in the intel wireless settings, there are several "notification" options...NONE of which mention sound, but it does infact work if you un-tick those boxes"

It references another Dell laptop, but if your Dell uses the same Intel wireless connection manager the frix should be the same.  Open your Intel thingie, look for notifications under settings or options, and uncheck everything.

Telling a man to uncheck his thingie is a bit personal, don't you think?

Damned witch boxes...

If its truely possesed by a witch, the only way to purify it is by burning it in the scared burn barrel of computer geekdom, which I just happen to have right in my backyard!

For the low cost of $29.95, I will purify the earth of your possesed laptop.  I will even start the sacred burning process with the "Holiest floppys of Mike's Bane" and return the purified ashes in a sanctified mountain dew bottle.  Just ship it to me at.....  laugh

They should really give me *expletive deleted*it to do at work huh?
