Cat question
« on: January 13, 2009, 08:14:53 PM »
Anyone know how much cold the average housecat can tolerate?  I got home late today and my cat was pissy about something.  Probably combination of late dinner and the dog hassling him.  He dashed out the door the moment I opened it and there no sign of him anywhere.  It's pretty bitter out--15f and windy.  He's only been gone about twenty minutes, but I'm still a little concerned.  Anyone know about cats and cold?  Blue, do you do cats, or are dogs your thing?

If you have a nice box, leave it on the porch with a heating pad inside if you get tired of watching... Maybe with some kitty goodies inside.

Cats are very tough critters and should be ok for awhile.  Is he an inside outside cat?  Is it wet as well as cold?  Odd are he will find a hidey spot and be fine.

I seem to recall a cat we had when I was a kid stayed out overnight on a cold night and the elements got the best of him.  Perhaps yours is more used to it, as it doesn't usually get as cold as it was that night.

Sunday it felt a little better, but it was quite irritated from me rubbing it.

Cats are tought critters.

I second bogie's idea.  If you're that worried, leave a box out for the brainless feline.

Odds are pretty good the little bastidge will find a good spot and serenade you sometime tonight once you're asleep anyhow, to make it know he wants in.

A couple years ago, we had a passel of feral cats in the neighborhood.  We used to feed and shelter 'em in our garage.  We put a flap deal in the entry door so they could come and go.  That winter was very cold and sometimes snowy.  The ones that did not survive; eventually they were all killed off, were done for by cars, coyotes and other predators.  They seem to handle the cold.  On the other hand, your cat, if it's a house cat, may not have a winter coat like outside ferals do.  It's gonna be sub zero here in Michigan tonight Bridgy.  Put a box out with an old blanket the cat can huddle in.  If you put out food, you may attract unwelcome guests.

There's a neighborhood cat that sleeps on my car in the winter. Every time I go to my car after a snow there are prints leading to my car and spot where the cat crashed on my hood for the night.

He's back.   =)

Sure enough, the dog tried pouncing on him as soon as he poked his nose in.  The dog is banished to the kitchen for a while while the cat gets some attention.

His feet aren't even cold to the touch.  Dunno where he was hiding.  Maybe under the car, we did just get home a couple hours ago, it's still warm-ish.

Cats come from a desert environment.  They need to maintain a higher body temp than humans and a number of other animals.  Cold is not friendly to them at all.  That being said, cats are hardy creatures and should be ok for a short while.

Cats that live outdoors and have a thick winter coat can survive below zero weather.

our short-haired domestic survives 10 f regularly and colder sometimes. we have an insulated box outside, with a blanket-pad in the bottom. sometimes he doesn't even use the box, but prefers to be under a thin tarp that covers some building supplies by the side of the house.

"happiness is a warm...kitty"

This is Bo (short for Botox, long story). The stove top actually is not much above room temp. Bo's an indoor/outdoor cat. Been known to stay out 36+hr in cold weather. I'm sure he shelters under an outbuilding, but often in the surrounding woods. I've seen him roll around on the ground after a light snow.
Above zero cold donesn't seem to be a big concern. He's a hunter, also, so missing an indoor meal isn't a problem.

Glad your's is home safe!

thaw it out when you find it and stick it in the oven?

*shurg* mine go run around on the roof in freezing weather. except Pharoh. he spends the winter months worshiping Ra (a.k.a the kerosene heater) cats are pretty good at taking care of themselves.

hell, he probably just did it to worry you and get the dog in trouble.

My brother lives out where the fox and hare kiss each other good night.  He has outdoor cats that he keeps around to kill mice and rats.

They have survived multiple winters where the temp gets to -20ish F and even lower with the wind chill.

The cats find a hole in a building and then group Dutch pile into it to stay warm.
