Title: Most heavily armed states... Or, CBS crock of crap...
Post by: K Frame on July 14, 2017, 07:43:22 AM
I can't even begin to list how many problems there are with this "methodology" as a means of determining how heavily armed a state is...

"As America reels from yet another mass shooting, inevitable questions resurface about guns laws and the nation's pervasive firearm culture. Here is a look at per capita weapons data, based on the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, and 2013 data from the U.S. Census.

While the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record is the only accessible list of its kind, it is not all-inclusive. NFA firearms only include the categories regulated by The National Firearms Act of 1934: machine guns, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, suppressors, destructive devices like bombs and grenades, concealable devices with the ability to discharge a shot through the energy of an explosive, and any firearm with a bore over half an inch that has not been determined to have a legitimate sporting use."

Essentially, it's a piece of panic mongering, but not really surprising coming from CBS, which has a LONG history of inventing all of the "news" that's fit to panic about.

On the plus side, my home in Virginia is number 5.

Let's see if we can get to number 1!

If they're looking at the NFA, Illinois isn't even going to be a blip.

Texas comes in at number 18, with 12.8 guns on record for every 1,000 residents. That's 337,309 firearms among 26,448,193 people. In fact, the actual numbers are probably higher because Texans are not required by law to register their firearms. As such, the ATF can only count those who seek background checks.

If that is just NFA firearms, that is more than I would have thought.  I guess I shouldn't be surprised.  I finally bought a suppressor last month.  When I went by the police station to get a finger print card done, the police woman said I was the 3rd one that day for that reason.

How freaking hard would it have been for these arseholes to get stats, per state, on background checks related to firearms sales?

Hell's bells, given the HUGE increase in gun sales during the Obama administration's 8-year gun and ammo sale, I'd bet that they would have gotten a lot better information.

Then again, that would be like, doing work with more relevant, but far less scary, information.

After all... MACHINE GUNS! EVIL EVIL MACHINE GUNS!
