So it's like when you step in something from the dog, and you scrape it off your shoe on the sidewalk? :P

;)

The only good suggestion I've heard for how to use spam...is to duct-tape a can of it to a grenade and throw it at the terrorists.

So now we have potted meat as SPAM.

I saw that at Walmart when I was grabbing some sardines, what does it taste like?

I do like to eat SPAM.

Spam isn't bad.

REALLY high salt content though.

If given the choice, I'd choose it over sardines (UGH) or potted meat (meh) any day.

But if I had to choose canned meat? Give me tuna, thank you.

It's almost, but not entirely, unlike anything else I've ever had. I just crack a can open and scoop it out with a saltine. Gotta use the saltine. Cans are like .75c (or were back at the PX where i used to buy em) so grab a can and try it.

Sardines are not the worst. You really want to offend people with canned fish?

Kippers. Heated.

The smell will never leave. Ever. You'll need to call in an exorcist.

Hmm... Canned meat?  Alright, I'll play:  Hormel dog food corned beef hash.  Tasty, but always reminds me of "Bachelor Chow" featured on Futurama.

I actually use canned chicken to make a mean Sloppy Joe sometimes.  It's pretty good, and is a little less work than ground beef.

Oh, they're fine if heated outside. It's just if you put them in a microwave that vents into the room, you may as well call hazmat.

"Hormel dog food corned beef hash."

Mtnbkr's wife makes a kick ass hot chip dip with a can of corned beef hash and a jar of cheese dip.

Mtnbkr and I look like cows milling around a frigging salt lick...

And, canned corned beef hash is truly fantastic stuff.

I like taking a big patty, making an indentation in the center, and putting in a couple of eggs.

Drop a teaspoon of water in the hot pan, slap a lid on it, and let the magic of steam poach your eggs.

Hell.

I need to stop at the grocery store on the way home...

heated? I eat the tasty bastards cold from the tin. Dog licks the tin when I am done. When I used to have a cat, it was his job to clean up the kipper, tuna or sardine tins.

Actually, the dip is a montery jack queso dip.

corn beef hash is wondrous stuff.

Pancake, layer of hash, pancake.  A breakfast sammich from heaven  =D

As for spam, great stuff but I need to be in the mood.  The spam lite is actually quite good with (relatively) lower sodium and fat...in other words enough a can here and there wont kill you by 40.  Still tastes pretty darn good too.

Sliced spam cooked in the pan with minute rice is actually purdy good.

Yeah, me too, actually.  Now I've got a hankering for some corned beef hash.  And cheese dip.
Mike and mtnbkr, thanks for the suggestion.  I'll look for some kind of Monty Jack dip.

I got spoiled by corned beef hash from a diner. The canned stuff just doesn't do it.

Theirs actually comes out sizzling and fragrant, crisped at the edges and rich in flavor.

1 block Velveeta
2 cans Rotel
1 can Southwest Pepper Jack condensed soup
1 can corned beef (I suppose you could use hash, though I've never tried) -Brad)
1 t garlic powder
1 T thyme

Combine in microwave safe bowl.  Microwave until melted, stirring occasionally until corned beef is well incorporated.  Serve with corn chips.

On that note, the potted pork in C rats was horrible!

But Turkey SPAM is some of the most delicious quick meal/snacks I've ever had.
I could eat three cans by itself in a row, but it's also amazing with other stuff.  Like Macaroni and Cheese.

As to potted meat products, I think Russian soldiers look angry because of what their rations consist of.

During WW II the United States supplied millions of canned rations to the Soviets for distribution to their troops.

Americans, not fond of US canned rations, were uniformly appalled by what the Soviets ordered.

The Soviets, on the other hand, LOVED the American rations, considering them to be far superior to anything that they were getting from the Rodina.

I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

American and Soviet rations were made in the same plants.

It was what the Soviets ordered for their troops, as in providing them with things that they were normally used to eating. That's what grossed the Americans out, the recipes.

But, for Soviets in the field, the American rations were far better quality wise than Soviet rations, even though the recipes were the same.

I always thought this was interesting, too. It's from 1944, a directive on how to eat captured Japanese rations once deemed safe...what parts would be familiar to Americans, and what things in them were unusual.

Quote
Most of these foods are familiar to Americans. A number of the canned foods, such as crabmeat, tuna and salmon, and the mandarin oranges, formerly were widely stocked by American grocers. The liquid soy-bean sauce is similar to that found in all U.S. Chinese restaurants, although it is saltier and "hotter." The bamboo and bean sprouts also are well known. The dehydrated vegetables can be reconstituted by American procedures, although the soaking time may be different and a certain amount of experimenting may be necessary. Rice, polished (white) or unpolished (brown), may be used in regular U.S. Army recipes. Cooked, this rice may be added to American B-ration meat items. The canned meat, fish, vegetables, and fruits may be used in the customary ways.

Come to think of it, there's a good passage in the book "Band of Brothers" about how Easy company was, at one point, being supplied with British rations, which were pretty uniformly found to be foul, mainly because of the recipes.

Easy also didn't like the fact that by drawing British rations, their coffee had been replaced with tea.

I had sardines and butter crackers last night. Wife even tried some with a lot of prodding, she didn't care for it because it was too salty, but she said it tasted a lot better than she thought it would. I always tell her, you should at least try it before you make an opinion.

and for the record i don't have issues with deagles if they have been/are being used to shoot game.

BlueStarLizzard (notice the caps?)

In a little place called ArmedPoliteSociety, one must consider their audience, to be frank.

There are Desert Eagle owners amongst us - trust me on that one.

I've used mine for competition, wild pigs, whitetail deer, steel swingers, and it was even a defensive pistol on one road trip.

I bristled at that comment for what I considered a very good reason, but it's really not just a Desert Eagle thing.

People from all walks of life visit here, and unless they exhibit a grossly developed 'tard factor, they're given a fair shake.

That "fair shake" also means with respect to religion, politics, sex, age, nationality, etc.

Was the thread going downhill prior to my locking it?

Probably.

Do the staff here have real lives and miss threads going awry?

You damn betcha.

We will strive to do better.  In the meantime, perhaps forum members can try not to increase our workload, either. ;)

Hey, we are talking about SPAM.  What do you think all that gummy stuff in the can really is?

SPAM - ehh, I can take it or leave it. Not bad sliced and fried as a sandwich with sharp cheddar and brown mustard though.

Kippers - Don't think I have had them as such, but the little canned herring steaks with slices of red onion, mustard, and hot sauce on dark bread makes a damned good sandwich.

Potted Meat - no, thank you. I just do not like it, nor the abomination known as "Vienna Sausages". Canned, cheap hot dogs. yum.

Deviled Ham - pretty good

Corned or Roast beef hash - Good. Fry a couple of eggs and throw them on a tortilla with hash and green chile, fold tortilla in half and pan fry the resulting "taco" in a little oil. GOOOOOOOOOD! The tortilla will get crisp AND chewy, and flake a bit just like good pastry.

Wow! A guy gets sick and misses a few days of APS and all heck breaks loose...maybe if we all ate more SPAM, we'd be a more mellow crowd....

BTW, what caliber Desert Eagle is best for opening SPAM cans?....
