A lot of people here on APS think that Mike Irwin is running some sort of one-man show, locking threads based upon his whims.
Sorry, but that's not the case. Ever since the Political forum was created, every moderator has been bombarded with complaints about one post or another that's offensive.
Sometimes, the person complaining may be simply looking for a way to strike back at his "adversary." More often than not, though, the person complaining has a legitimate beef.
The APS Political forum exists because the Legal and Politcal forum on The High Road simply got out of control. It was the belief of the APS moderators, based upon the past conduct of APS members, that such a situation would not happen here.
Well, it did. Othewise well-respected and congenial members have engaged in conduct that can hardly be termed "polite."
APS only exists because of Oleg Volk's generosity. And, if the forum deteriorates into the same sort of cesspool that resulted in the Legal and Political forum being removed from THR, well, that can happen here as well. In fact, the entire APS forum could disappear.
If you disagree with another poster's position, that's fine. But don't phrase your statements in words that you wouldn't say to that person's face.
IOW, think twice, post once.
It would be a shame to see APS go away.
-
Might be wise just to nuke Political forum now.
-
No need for that.
I suspect that 10% of APS members are causing 90% of the problems. Get those 10% under control (or booted) and most of the problems are fixed.

We've already started that.
And, in all fairness, the percentage of trouble makers is much, much less then the 10% you guestimate.
With rare exception, it's the same lovely 3-4 people in 99% of the threads.
It's just that those few do such a wonderful job of being a problem.
Personally, it's getting old.
-
Ex-MA Hole, you're just mad because you can't blame this situation on me.
-
Don't worry fistful, you're gonna be part of the next wave of beatings.
Chris

This is why I stayed out of the political forum on THR, and why I shy away from the one here. I don't want to get caught up in the mass culling.
-
"I don't want to get caught in the mass culling"
I seriously doubt that there will be any mass cull simply because most posters here have shown a remarkable propensity for maintaining level-headed discussion.
As long as you can do that, you have nothing to fear.
There are numerous threads in which I could get down and dirty and really into a no hold barred debate. I simply walk away from them now when they start to heat up, secure in my knowledge that I'm right and that the other person is wrong.

Funny, I do the same thing. It's amazing how often we're right.

You guys can't always be right, cause I'm always right.
-
You guys can't always be right, cause I'm always right.
What if you're BOTH right ?!?!?!
-
Impossible.
EVERYONE knows that Mike is always right.
And that no one ever agrees with him.
Dasmi- There is to be no mass culling. The mods got together and realized that almost all of us had given "one last warning" to a couple of particualr posters. We decided that these people had enough "last warnings".
This is not based on one, two, or even three warnings. But instead, on many, many warnings.
Now to more important business: How can we blame this on Fistful?
-
ex-ma,
We could use the old tried and true communist method. We have determined you are to be guilty of something, so you are.
-
Now to more important business: How can we blame this on Fistful?
Waterboarding, stress positions, sensory deprivation, and suspension of habeas corpus. If that does not work, we lock him in a padded room and turn on the Yanni.
-
Ex-MA Hole, you're just mad because you can't blame this situation on me.
In all fairness, no he can't.
But you're the forum scapegoat so we're just gonna assume that somehow, it's your fault.

According to Michelle, you're 100% wrong.

Impossible.

NNooooo.....don't ban me!
Have we thought about maybe making the Politics hole only accessible to "friends"?
Or, unmoderating it and leaving it to burn?
Those are my measly suggestions. YMMV.
-
I can't remember if we considered the Friends Only politics forum or not. As for unmoderating it and letting it burn, that's the quickest way to get this entire forum shut down.
Chris
-
Well, I am certainly no saint. I hope if I say something y'all don't like, you will tell me promptly.
I did notice a few threads locked that had been going on all week.
-
You mean people were banned, and I missed it? Drat!

All were tried on one particularly tough terrorist. All failed, though Yanni did get him to sweat a bit.
Then an enterprising interrogator downloaded some particularly nefarious ditty onto his iPod. All he had to do was show the terrorist the LCD, scrolling the words of the artist:

You could just make him watch that .gif of Hasselhof in a speedo Charby posted. [/shudders]

"Have we thought about maybe making the Politics hole only accessible to "friends"?"
No.
-
Mike, I want to be the first to thank you for the clear, and well articulated answer.
Should we?

Mike, I want to be the first to thank you for the clear, and well articulated answer.
Should we?
Or do we add another classification?
Or do we leave it and see if the waves settle?

NO
From my message announcing the Politics Place...
"Yes, it is something of an experiment to see if a political forum that is not devoted to a single view point (Democratic Underground, Free Republic) can actually thrive.
I, personally, think it can."
-
I didn't google zamfir, I Youtubed him. Sounds nice. I'd like to see him do the Morricone spaghetti Western themes.
-
I still have the Yanni at Santorini VHS tape.
-
It might not be 10% of APS members causing the problems... It may be 2-3%, with multiple identities, who at the end of their shift turn in their numbers to their supervisor, who congratulates them on a job well done, and then either says "Go Hillary" or "Go Jihad."
-
Paranoid much, there, Bogie?
-
I still have the Yanni at Santorini VHS tape.
Say... what is the lat, long and altitude of said tape? For some reason, USSTRATCOM wants it. They're going on about "DJNO" and "preemptive first strike" something or other.
-
Henery Hawk: Hey, he called you a chicken.
Foghorn Leghorn: That's what I've been - I say, that's what I've been telling you, boy! I am a chicken!
[Henery hits Foghorn on the head with a shovel and drags him away]
Henery Hawk: He talked me into it.
Foghorn Leghorn: I'm just a loud-mouthed schnook.
Henery Hawk: Chicken or schnook, in our oven he'll look good.

I'm not going to say "I told ya so" yet, but historically, open discussion of religion and politics has been a cause of contention, not peace and brotherhood.

You had peace and brotherhood in the womb; you'll get it again when you're dead. The game here is evolution through sturm und drang.

"I'm not going to say "I told ya so" yet, but historically, open discussion of religion and politics has been a cause of contention, not peace and brotherhood."
Can you tell me where I, or any of the other mods/admins, have said that there won't be contention?
You can't.
What we have said is that contention can be done politely, civilly, and without every discussion devolving into a riot in the monkey house.
Is that conceptually so hard to fathom?
If you're just going to sit around, waiting like a vulture to screech "TOLD YOU SO," I'd suggest finding another board.

now that was downright uncalled for, and petty. But you have presented a pretty good solution for me, at any rate. Adios dude.
-
Petty?
No.
What's petty is kicking back and with obvious glee waiting for and categorizing any possible crack as an opportunity to tell everyone how magnificently prescient you are.
As I said, it's pretty obvious that the entire concept has escaped some people who should be more than able to figure it out.

...uh, Christmas present?
-
Remember - this town is only big enough for ONE scapegoat.
Mike, if you were running an election, wouldn't you try to do something around viral media? I'd have a coupla boiler rooms, fulla kids who are being paid VERY well to keep their traps shut (and promised political jobs in the future), whose express purpose would be to further the election strategy. Take 100 of these true believers, and give each of them 100 chat rooms/forums to monitor. At a post a minute (and some can be literally copy/paste), they can sling some serious media out there...
Heck - I wonder how much of the "vote for anyone but a republican" stuff is coming from out of the country...

Probably more than you want to realize.
