The Time Poll
« on: October 19, 2010, 11:40:59 PM »
How do you view time?

1.  sum_days(past) = sum_days(future)

Whether it's "today", the day just before Armageddon, the day Jesus was born, the day the first T-rex walked around or the "7th day" that God sat back on his haunches and said "hand me back my beer..." there was always a flow of Time even before Creation or the Big Bang, and there will always be a flow of Time after Armageddon or when all the stars grow cold.

2.  sum_days(past) > sum_days(future)

Armageddon is coming, or the anticipated life-span of the cosmic fusion energy around us is less than what has been used so far.  Entropy and damnation approach.  There is more of our history (or Creation's history) behind us, than what is before us.

3.  sum_days(past) < sum_days(future)

We are still in our infancy of Time.  The potential before us (or some other chosen Race or alien life form) is untapped.  All attempts of prophecy have been inherently childish, whether Buddhist, Christian, Einsteinian or Hawkingtonian.  The force of Creation did indeed create Time at some "X" day in our past, and our potential has not reached the halfway point of the lifespan of the Creation cycle.

Time is an illusion created by our brains to make sense of different states of entropy.

The universe may simply exist in a "long now" where matter and energy are free to move, but there actually is no time.

http://discovermagazine.com/2007/jun/in-no-time

Keep in mind there is no such thing as a device that actually measures time. We have many devices that count the swings of a pendulum, the unwinding of springs as moderated by gears, the vibrations of a quartz crystal exposed to an electrical current, or the vibration of cesium atoms.

All these devices simply measure physical events that are presumed to progress in time.
I promise not to duck.

So you're saying that clocks and time shares are a scam? And my employer can just refuse to pay me, as I can't prove that I worked any hours this week?

You're a real downer.  =(

I believe in Groundhog Day time.  There's a big bang, universe grows and expands, then stops expanding, falls in upon itself, there's a Big Bang, the groundhog drives angry, wash, rinse, repeat, Ad infinitum.

Also can be viewed as God creates it all in six days, kicks back with a brewski on day seven, by day 20 or so gets bored with it or it's not working quite like he wants it to, scrunches it all up and starts over....

And yes, it is still all Fistful's fault.

I don't think any of us will be alive in 100 years.  And by us I don't mean APS members, I mean people in general.

IMHO time and mathematics are why Einstein, Hawkins and their ilk will never reach the solution they seek. Both are inventions of man and neither are perfect. I don't believe you can reach a correct solution with imperfect methods. Garbage in / garbage out.

My evidence? The fact that we need a "leap year" every four years and the fact that noone has yet to solve Pi.

The conundrum of Pi fascinates me. I think it's the closest we can come to seeing the hand of God at work in terms of the inner workings of the universe.

Pie does too. Is there bacon pie? I guess there could be.  ;)

You're a real downer.  =(

This "work" you speak of....  What form did it consist of?  Was the effort you claim to have expended in any way similar to the expenditure of effort your employer expected of you?

And as for time shares - everybody knows they are scams.

stay safe.

PS - Although I set a new personal best record this morning for the number of consecutive days waking up alive, I fear I may not be able to continue for much longer.  Seems that "old age" thing may get in the way sooner rather than later.

Time always has been, and always will be, long before and long after anyone's around to measure it.
It's infinite.

Therefore;
Sum of time Past= Sum of time Future

There you go
Glad I could help

Time is an illusion created by our brains to make sense of different states of entropy.

And we've added layers of religion and culture on top of that, and those vary so much more than the choices offered even within any given culture/religion.

I object to the choices, which presume a linear perspective on time.  Personally, my theory of time comes from Ecclesiasteses (sorry, no clue how to spell it in English):  There ain't nuthin' new.
