So, I'm totally out of the loop on the Zombie thing...
« on: November 25, 2007, 02:11:25 PM »
All this talk of zombies on the gun forums, the last few years - how did that start?

I haven't seen any zombie movies or read any zombie books, so I must have missed a lot.  But I do recall my friends playing that Resident Evil game.  Especially the first one, with the gang-rape death scene.

...no...no...
I just played through the first three and RE4 not long ago...
No rapes, gangs, or death scenes at all...

Zombies are just cool TEOTW fodder. It's easy to tell your enemies from your friends, and fun to shoot the zombies in the head. Plus all the chicks you pair up with to kill zombies are smokin' hot, even the one legged ones with a machine gun for a leg. So what's not to like???  laugh

When you don't feel like having a debate, "zombies" are always a good answer when someone asks you why you have thousands of rounds of ammo on hand or why you need high cap mags, etc. I've always been a big zombie movie fan anyways.

"Talk like a pirate day" caught on a few years ago, and there is some connection between the FSM and pirates.  But I don't know the origins exactly.  I have no clue about zombies either.  My blissful ignorance is quite pleasant actually.

As was said, many of the Zombie movies were akin to TEOTWAWKI scenarios.  You might say it got a whole new generation of post-cold war kids thinking about what they would do if it happened to them.  Smiley

The pirate thing probably has something to do with the "music/movie piracy" that exploded after the internet took off.

Don't forget The Pirates of the Caribbean movies and the pirate craze that followed that as well.

Very simple.  It's an implausible end of the world type scenerio.  They're mythical monsters like werewolves, vampires or Furby dolls.  Plus they're much like Nazis, in movies or video games you can do literally anything to zombies and no one will complain.  Impale them, shoot them, cut them to ribbons, whatever.  They're a very clear 'bad guy', who can be killed without any remorse or regret on the part of the viewer.

I played Resident Evil and I am very unaware of any rape scene.

Yes. They're the supernatural equivalent of Nazis.

Except mentioning them in a thread doesn't automatically doom it to being Godwined and beyond reasonable discussion.

Zombies. No one wants them around. They're already dead. So what would you use to defend yourself against them? The possibilities are endless.

Pirates. I think that took off with the resurgence of pirates in various oceans and sea's, and was really brought into the spotlight when they were attacking luxury cruise ships. It's another self-defense scenario that allows for some creativity.

Who can fault you for shooting flesh-eating zombies and cut throat pirates?

No, no, pirates are GOOD. They're superior to ninjas, even.

The movies brought back the pirate resurgence. In a societal sense, I think people like an icon that breaks the rules and gets away with it. That's the current version of such.

OK, thanks for the replies, but I guess I'd better explain the gang-rape thing.   cheesy   In the first Resident Evil, when your character dies, he/she drops down to all fours, and the zombies gather about grunting and pushing.  We (me and the rest of Bravo company) thought it looked, and sounded, a little sexual.

Flame away.  smiley

Ah.  Uhm.  I could be wildly off the mark, I think it says more about you than it does about the video game.  How long were you deployed when you made this...  observation?  If longer than 6 months, completely acceptable.

Saw that one coming.  I feel the same way about whoever came up with that gun-legged girl up there.  And anybody that finds that even mildly attractive.  Yikes.

this

The pirate thing evolved from RealUltimatePower and its ninja focus.

I'm not sure when it happened but the Ninjas vs. Pirates meme was next.

If there are zombies in that book I'm definitely buying it.  I just hope I get my check book before he stops doing the pre-order patch thing. Sad
