Do I need a mousepad?
« on: February 10, 2007, 08:39:46 PM »
The mouse for my home computer is female (no balls underneath) and I wonder if anyone can tell me whether I need to use a mousepad with it.  On my previous desk, it did not work well without a mouse pad.  With my new desk, it works fine, but I don't know if the slightly more textured surface will be bad for it.

Any idea?

At worse a rougher surface might wear out the little pads on the mouse faster. And even if they do, you can buy replacement mouse feet for dirt cheap. But there's no harm that could be done to the optical sensor from a rougher surface. So long as the top of your desk isn't covered in sand, mouse away! smiley

Well, Winston, I'm not sure what they're intended purpose is, but I really needed one for my old desk.  It had a scratched-up melamine (laminate) top, and it just made the mouse work funky.  Besides, my girlfriend bought me this Scarface mousepad so why not?   smiley

My new desk is also particle board, but it's laminated with real wood.  Works much better on that.

Optical mice don't really need a mouse pad unless your desk is glass or very, very shiny.  The little feet on the bottom are, however, a magnet for lots and lots of cat hair (and my cats are never even on my desk!  It's a complete mytery.)

If it is an optical mouse, and you have a decent flat surface for it to be used on it should be ok.

Rollerball mice are better, though. :p

I like my optical ball, it can just sit in one spot and be worked with 1 finger.

My current optical mouse has been in use without a mousepad on a wooden desk for almost three years without problem or obvious wearing of the feet.

My desk has a pure black surface -- the optical mouse won't work on it at all.

It works nicely on almost any other surface though--- wood grain of another desk, corian on the kitchen counter, surface of a pad of writing paper etc.
But as was already pointed out, you try working on something that is shiny enough to act like a mirror and you get erratic results.

I like the optical mouse because I don't have to clean mouse balls and the little sensing rollers inside all the time.   Much easier to maintain.

But I still use and LIKE mouse-pads.  They have a smooth velvet finish that gives you a consistent soft feel as you glide your mouse around.  Most other surfaces either have or pick up contaminants like wax, oil, dust, food particles (OK, I'm a messy eater).

And you can get some really interesting messages on them.

I have a razer optical mouse, and I have a big ol' CorePad mousepad because my desk is all crappy and uneven , and it makes the meece easier to push around.

I use a pad at home simply because the mouse works well on that surface.  It doesn't work well on my desk surface.  It pretty much had the same purpose with a ball mouse; providing a good surface for the mouse to work on.

I don't use a mouse pad anymore.

They desk that the computer used to be at is a solid oak desk that I had made.  The grain would give it a funky behavior from time to time.  I think it had something to with the finish is on there.

Mouse pads are an unneeded hassle with an optical mouse.

A friend of mine in the "know" explained to me that a pad specifically designed for optical mice is always best...but the concern was for gaming.  So I guess it wont matter if you're just doing normal things.

No.  Optical mice don't do real well with very shiny (like glass) surfaces, but any other flat smooth surface will do.

I like that.

If you have a laser mouse, you need a special pad to keep it from burning a hole through your desk.  cheesy
