We cant drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times & and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK, Obama said.

I wonder what HIS thermostat is set on in his house? Perhaps we should establish international inspectors to check what he's got it set at, first.
And how much we eat? Fine, Obama. Iran says you can't eat your waffle.
Oh, yeah, and in a random search...you'd expect to find support for him on this forum of all places, but people got angry at that. Good. http://www.oprah.com/community/thread/65517

and eat as much as we want
That's got to be the stupidest statement from a politician that I ever heard.
On a side note, the "eat as much as we want" was one of the big draws for my parents immigrating here. They grew up during the European depressions and WW2, and remember the German govt coming to their little farms and taking all the food for the army and leaving them with potato soup. When they made it here, even in the first few years, when they were getting on their feet and barely scraping by, the fridge was always stocked with lots of good food because, "Dis iz America, and ve can".
-
I wonder who here is going to be all for this...
-
I wonder what HIS thermostat is set on in his house?
Do not know about his new house, but his condo on 54th was very toasty. It was only cold when he went out to smoke (Michelle would not let him smoke inside).
BTW, when Obama was in the State Senate we used to jab him over his preference of SUVs and that he drove to Springfield rather than took the train. He sold his SUV when he ran for U.S. Senate.

The big issue about the leftoid crap with global warming is NOT the environment. It's CONSUMPTION.
Listen to their culture and their rants, they always hate the CONSUMerist society.
You CONSUME too much.
You EAT too much.
Your car is too big.
Enjoying yourself is BAAAD.
And of course, people want to enjoy themselves, and the whole point of America is that they have a RIGHT to do it. And people will break their silly guidelines and rules, because very few people can live the lifestyle of 'consuming as little as possible to save Gaia'. But they will feel guilty.
That's the whole point of totalitarians of all stripes - to create a standard of behavior which none can follow but all are to feel guilty for not following.
Because guilt is a mechanism of control.
-
keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times
Wow, I actually AGREE with Obama on this one. 72 F is much too warm in the summer and much too cold in the winter.
"Step away from the thermostat, and nobody will get hurt"
-
Well, that whole set the thermostat and put on a sweater thing worked so well for Carter you can hardly blame him for co-opting it.
I don't seem to remember Jimmy Earl passing along menu recommendations, though...
-
I wonder who here is going to be all for this...
I don't have to wonder, even if they don't post on this particular thread.
-
We cant drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times & and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK, Obama said.
You ain't my dad. I pay my own heating and AC bill, and I'll set the dang thermostat where I want. You hook a monitoring wire up to my house like that silly California proposition, and I'll disconnect it. Piss me off enough, and I'll go off-grid.
-
We cant drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times & and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK, Obama said.
I'm sorry, but what in the name of Pete do other countries have to do with this? Are we keeping them from having comfortable homes? Are we eating the food they were going to eat?
-
Our consumption doesn't pass a higher, "global" test.

As others have said, Obama has no allegiance to America. None. He's an internationalist.

I wonder who here is going to be all for this...
Good question.
Although, if they go after my granola, I'm going to be pissed...
-
I used to live in Arizona. My wife hates being hot. In the summer, we set our thermostat as low as 55, although low 60's was more common. I feel so guilty now.
How can anyone take this *expletive deleted*bag seriously?
-
....at least McCain is smart enough not to say the same thing out loud....
-
....at least McCain is smart enough not to say the same thing out loud....
But the more I look at it, the more stupid Obama's comment appears. What is it the rest of the world is going to do to us for eating and driving the way we do? And why? I didn't know they cared.
-
What is it the rest of the world is going to do to us for eating and driving the way we do?
Isn't that why we have nukes?
-

The nerve! This statement disturbs me on so many levels...
CA state nanny-ism attempting to go national.
The idea that what we work for, what we earn the right to, somehow deprives others.
The concept that we somehow have to have permission from other countries to do anything in our own.
The absurd notion that we should feel guilty for what we have, what we work for and what we acquire.
The palpable contempt evident for capitalism and consumers.
How dare he try to tell us what we can and cannot do. Scary that he might be put in a position to somewhat be able to.
-
I have a sly suspicion that Obama was secretly bribed by the RNC, to ensure 8 more years of Republican rule.
Little did they know that the DNC simultaneously bribed McCain...

Holy *expletive deleted*it that is cold in the summer time. I couldn't even fathom the electric bill for running AC that could here in Iowa, are swamp coolers a lot cheaper to run?
Wife hates it hot also, I keep telling her it is in her head.
-
Charby, during the summer in Arizona, the heat will kick in your door and knock you over the head. The most uncomfortable I have been has been at Gunsite in August. I've had the hotel AC at 55 and slept without my shirt.
In deep winter where we are you can add clothing, go exercise, throw a log on the fire or turn up the heat. There is no escape from that kind of heat.

I paid less in AZ in summer than I do in WA in the winter. /shrug Not sure why, but even with it cranked down I was forking over ~$100-200 at the worst.

It's not as bad as Iraq, but close. I grew up in a trailer with a swamp cooler. When power would go out for a couple days due to summer storms it was just brutal.
-
We ran the swamp cooler until the monsoons started in July/Aug time frame. When the humidty went up we used the a/c. Bill during the swamp cooler time frame was ~200 mo (includes pool, jacuzzi, hot water ect) and with the a/c running it went up to ~300 per mo.
As for the original thread, What I want to drive, how much I want to eat and however warm/cold I want my house is no business of the gov.

I wonder how O'Bama is going to control how much wood I put in my woodstove Maybe he's going to ban chainsaws, too
-

Probably some sort of genious move like prohibiting the logging of dead trees in National Forests. That way it can burn on the ground and burn down live trees as well, rather than burning usefully and safely in your fireplace at home.
Or, requiring a logging permit that costs more in the end than buying wood from some guy. You know, that permit would save 18.6 children a piece. And rain forests... you can't forget rain forests. Probably .742 acres per permit.

Yup. I lived in Nevada for the first 18 years of my life. Still go down to visit the folks every once in a while.
The summers don't get quite as bad as down in Arizona, but it's close. Walking outside during the sumer feels like walking into a furnace. I remember mowing the lawn once in 111 degree heat; damn near got heat exhaustion (which wouldn't have been the first time, actually -- I had previously succumbed to heat exhaustion while playing baseball in little league).
I've seen outdoor plastic thermometers melt in that kind of heat.
Every May or so we'd put a very large air conditioner unit in the upstairs and downstairs windows. Then we'd run them damn near nonstop until late September. It was the only way to escape the heat.
Recently, my folks had a vent-less central A/C unit installed, so they didn't have to install the window units every year (they're getting old, and those window units are not light).
-

There's no National Forest within 50 miles of where I live. All my wood comes off private property (my own and neighbors who let me cut on their place).
I've cut several big dead trees within 100' of my house this spring.

The U.S. consumes "disproportionately" (according to Obamaism). It also, of course, produces "disproportionately," accounting for the arguably the lion's share of what we can term "the modern industrial world." Obama is a starry-eyed messiah blundering into an area he clearly doesn't understand: economics.
As for our profligate thermostats, a goodly chunk of this country would be only semi-habitable and certainly less than efficiently productive without air conditioning and good heating. The American people are tolerating the blandishments of the new Religion of Climate Change only because, so far, they have not had to pay the inevitably brutal price of all of this unctuous silliness.
-
Obama is a starry-eyed messiah blundering into an area he clearly doesn't understand: economics.
Which is exactly why it's critical that McCain win.
They're both freaking disasters, longeyes.
-
I'm no big McCain fan but McCain at least buys us some time to figure out a strategy to save the Republic. Obama Unbound will offer us very few choices if he operates as we all fear he will.

No, all McCain does is dig us deeper into the hole Bush started. Obama is destructive, but at least in a different direction.
-
So, we kill ourselves either way. Fantastic.

They'll ban that too.
You can have my STIHL when you pry it from my cold dead hands

McCain won't buy us any time.....but Obama (who's first & only term will make Carter look like Reagan) will hopefully give conservatives the impetus to take back the GOP and get a real candidate in for the 2012 elections....
-
Sorry, don't count on me to help put an Obama into office in the hope that conservatives will wake up. My own view is that there are no longer enough conservatives or are likely to be ever again to "take back America." If we want to preserve political liberty we will have to find a way to create ramparts around our political cosm and/or take the game somewhere else.
I consider Obama only to be a likely catalyst for civil war, not reconciliation. That may be inevitable but it's not something any of us should want to encourage, much less rush into.

You can't renovate the house by scattering gasoline and lighting a match. That's what he'd do.
I really don't want terrorist attacks brought on by weak policies, and a total economic collapse and chaos accompanied by a lack of defensive firearms because they've been taken away. Do you?
Obama would completely and totally screw up foreign policy by legitimizing the rule of dictators. He'd be an impediment to fed-up Iranians throwing out their crazed leader, whom they're angry at for isolating them from the world, driving up prices of everything.
He'd ruin the economy with pushes for and signing idiotic Democrat policies that would punish the upper middle and upper class investors and small business owners, pushing for socialism, driving out investors to invest overseas instead. People wouldn't be able to afford to run a business here anymore due to the ridiculous "share with the people who don't want to work" crap they'd try all over again. The economy would pull an Argentina.
He'd encourage and sign everything from an AWB to national firearms registration.
I don't want that. You can't go back from registration, especially. Once they have that, it's there.
-

And McCain won't sign any or all of those things?....
If the house is too far gone, you have to demolish it...and a controlled burn is the most effective way.....
-
And a controlled burn means what exactly...?
I think it's more realistic to try and cordon off what we can while we can.

I agree with you, but I think the worst part would be that BHO would saddle us with more social programs like all of the other great three-letter presidents, FDR, JFK, LBJ. Once established, entitlements become rights and never go away, no matter how inefficient or detrimental to the overall economy they are. I can't imagine how many more 'third rails' (social security, medicare, medicaid) BHO will lay down.
No matter who comes after him, the toothpaste won't go back in the tube.
-
Time better spent would be trying to figure out how to dismantle the existing third rails.
-
In a speech just now, he talked about "The Americas", not America. He said "What is good for The Americas is good for the United States". He used imagery like "the security of a policeman in Mexico City" as being important to us.
So. We're supposed to throw our lot in with narco-states, banana republics, and tinpot socialists?
We're going to need more ammo if he wins. Especially before he gets it banned.
Between a Democrat congress and him, America will BREAK. And I mean wheels flying off, smoke pouring out broken. Like nothing anyone has ever seen since the Great Depression.
-
He wants to be Che. He's already got the poster.
Seeker_two, I meant, of course, what do you intend by a "political" controlled burn? That's a metaphor for what?

Mane, we survived a Carter Admin with a Democrat Congress but there were Scoop Jackson Democrats about them. Today the Far Left is firmly behind the wheel.
-
I was set to be all smug because I don't have a thermostat (electric heat, each ceiling panel and basement unit is controlled from an individual or area dial). Then I realized he'll probably just ban my house. Of course the house is a relic of a different era. Bomb shelter in the basement, and mostly electric, designed with the expectation of endless, cheap nuclear power.
-
Bomb shelter? He might label you a survivalist and put you in jail for it.
Lord knows how this country is going to survive with him in office. First time my life that I'm worried about our future.

Weird. It's the first time Michelle's been proud of her country, and the first time your afraid for our future. What are the odds of that happening at the same time?

If you have a house figure on being asked to share it with the coming wave of "God's children."

I couldn't possibly be a survivalist. I don't even have any guns. There was this boating accident, see...

We're already sharing our house with five of "God's children" - two dogs and three cats
Not to mention three horses, but they don't come inside the house.
