Tourists dressing down at Oktoberfest
« on: September 10, 2018, 11:57:44 AM »
It seems the traditionalists are have a case of the vapors in Munich this year because too many tourists are sexualizing the dirndls. I just wish I had the means to travel there and do an in-depth analysis of the issue for the readers of this forum. I guess I could start a go fund me and see how that works. ;)

I for one welcome the "paralytic Australian and Italians" who are being brave enough to wear the costume in the tents.

This thread requires example pictures so we can properly judge the tastefulness of said costumes. The linked article was somewhat lacking.

I know, but being at work it is difficult to find the appropriate pictures for this thread. A few pics in the article but more would make for a better comparative analysis. Good thing the St. Pauli girl doesn't go to Oktoberfest, they would be very disapproving.

Pictures in the article look like pretty much every pic I've ever seen of "girls of Oktoberfest".

Munich, the city where people ride the bus naked, is complaining about sexy dirndls.  ;/

Oh, well, no wonder somebody's complaining about it.  I guess Franz Thalhammer's the one to blame.   (I'm always looking for a specific, named, person when stuff shows up out of nowhere.)

I would bet that in the days when dirndls first became popular, they were pretty friggin' racy for that time, betcha betcha.

One of the commenters remarked, "That's part of the fun of Oktoberfest; it also could be called Oktoberbreast."

My inner 12-year-old haw-hawed over that one.

The girls with the lace looked nice. The girls with the cheap polyester satin looked like crap. Some of the cleavage was well displayed. Others? Well... It's supposed to be cleavage, not the whole set of boobs.

From a purely aesthetic standpoint, it is possible to be sexy without being trashy. I can see being annoyed if I went to a culturally based celebration and there were a bunch of skank ho's in cheap ghetto costumes getting drunk.

I think it stopped being a cultural fest many years ago and is now just an excuse to drink beer and get drunk in tents that smell of piss and puke. Even the Oktoberfest in out little Bavarian town in WA (Leavenworth) has grown from 1 weekend to several weekends in October is nothing but a bunch of drunks crowding the streets. :(

Oktoberfest, which kicks off in Munich on Sept. 22, is expecting around 7 million visitors during the three weeks. Last year, 6.2 million people attended the festival and drank 7.5 million glasses of beer.

See, that's just sad. If I went to an Oktoberfest thing, I'd want the Bavarian food as much as I'd want beer. Actually, I'd probably want the food more than the beer. And nobody wants to eat in a tent that smells like piss and puke.

<curmudgeon voice> Isn't that the way everything has gone. Why I can remember when Burning Man was a small gathering and don't even get me started on the Over the Line Tournament in San Diego.  I guess being old enough to remember the early days of some things is both good and bad. Good because I enjoyed them, bad because I won't subject myself to them anymore. It does look like the OTL is trying to clean up its act by banning alcohol and nudity, I wonder how that is working? Burning man on OTH just gets weirder and weirder (and more crowded) every year.

And you are right about the food, beer is beer, good food is something different indeed.

This is how I remember the Oktoberfest I went to. (The picture is several years old. )

Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,

That means at least three of those girls are now of age.

IIRC, the age of consent in Germany is 14.  Which, as Archer rightfully pointed out, makes Germany the Alabama of Europe.

So the people that tried to snuff out an entire culture are complaining about cultural appropriation?
