I forget the link to thread caseydog started some time back with pics - there were some good ones.
So anyways - what say we share some summer flavors, while it lasts - post something seasonal and maybe even typical of your area.
For now I offer this pic taken this morning - Mr Frog was most obliging while I took some shots!
-
I just took this recently.. edited.... how's this?
-
Veloce - beautiful flower - and while I am no botanist I reckon that is a lily - fairly std lily - we have some soon to be in flower.
.
I noticed - well on my system and monitor - your pic seemed low on gamma -- needed brightening up - plus it was somewhat large. I took liberty of ''tweaking'' to try and up the vibrancy and also reduced pic to 600 pix max dimension - and saved at enough compression to make about 52K only.
'
The pic below yours is my lily from last year - different color but you'll see the similarity.
'

-
Very nice adjustments P95 I just resized it in acdsee
I'll have to play with it in PScs to see if I can match your adjustments.
Your's is still a little crisper.. would adjusting the sharpness help that?
-
5 kittens this year.
-
jefnvk - beaut kitten pic - often hard to get those lil' fellas to keep still for long!!
Veloce - good resize there - and looks better too. I did enhance sharpness a tad - I use linear interpolation for resize which helps reduce pixilation but I do add a touch of edge enhancement which adds a bit of bite!
-
Here's one I took in March
Well that's goofy. Photobucket resized it and lost the panorama.
-
Real pretty Riley - tho Springtime (I'll let you off!) but - nice composition and made better by that low cloud skyline. Looks like a nice walk along there.
-
One I took during the President's Day Blizzard in Virginia in 2003.
-
Great pic, P95! Mr. Frog was indeed very cooperative it seems.
Here's Lake Belton at dusk:
brad cook
-
Just took this - end of day and a storm passin' by quite close. Missed the best sky color unfortunately.
-
I just missed a terrific shot. The dog, the cat, SWBO & I just walked down to close the gate. On the way we saw a bunch of turkey vultures sitting in a big pine tree looking into the sunset. I was too lazy to walk back up the hill for the camera.
-
Riley - if I was disciplined enough to always have my camera - I'd have countless shots I'd be well pleased with! Usually, you have to act fast too .... plus often lady luck on your side.
This shot actually was last summer and I posted it once before but - luck was there re birds in the frame and - the cloud formation was so transient, it was gone a minute later. Camera just happened to be on hand.
-
Taken with a picturephone, but that's what I need to do to always have a camera with me. Sunset over San Francisco's Marina Green on 6/12/05. Obscured by the flare is the Golden Gate bridge, you can sorta see part of it right above the waterline on the left side. Those hills in the background are the Marin Headlands.
EDIT: Sorry for the continuance of the setting sun cliche... but that lighting only comes about twice a day, and I ain't getting up early.
-
How's that for a summer photo?
-
Jamis - NICE fish!
I think we all tend to take sky pics - sunsets of course mainly - not difficult to see why when lighting can be so incredibly variable and there is beauty to be seen therefore in an infinite number of permutations.
Winston - these phone pics are actually pretty fair considering the very low res they use.
-
That's at Jackson and something or other, in the the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco, overlooking the Eastern Cow Hollow and that golden dome is the Palace of Fine Arts, where the world fair of like 1921 was held.
Does anyone know a good free image editing program for macintosh is? I want to mess with the contrast and tint and stuff.
-
Winston Smith,

-
Mr Frog obliged again - patient model!
-
My kids having fun with water balloons.
-
MAN!
You guys are good - really good. Some of these pics are professional quality and would be at home in any gallery.
Though to P-95 I have to say I prefer the muted somewhat less bright and sharp red lily over the brightened up one you produced. IMO flowers should be soft with muted pastels not sharp and crisp - especially if the shot is a morning shot.
Those frog shots - especially that last one are great. And so is the purple sky shot and that one with the golden sky and the fishermen.
More! More! Give us more.
-
Werewolf - yep - there are various ways with flowers and I agree sometimes muted and a bit softer can work too - much of course comes down to our own tastes - but I do like to see color ''released'' sometimes.
I am cheating a bit by digging back into last summer again - one of my fave pics I got then with the ''Brood-x" Cicadas .......... this early summer has been a tad more peaceful than last!!!
-
Lee,
I love the way you caught the cascade of water, that's really cool .
P95, great pictures, as always .
I keep on blaming the camera for my pictures but I know that it's me .
Wayne
-
Thanks! Here's the "before" shot.
-
Summer to me, means bonfires!
-
P95, as this is nominally a gun forum, I'll congratulate you on some very nice pistil pictures!
-
Antibubba - thx petal!!
Hahaha - yep, one or two pistils - so I am sorta (slightly) on topic LOL! May have to 'leaf' doing this for a bit, or 'stem' the flow of non gun pics! OK 'bud'?
Regarding here as pretty much a place to meet good folks I must admit I am not so ''gun driven'' as ''back home'' on THR! Love pics too.
-
How about mountain morning sunrise...
Just some neat clouds...
-
Spin - beautiful. As I said earlier - the sky is remarkable in as much as every day it shows something new and unrepeatable.
Many, many years back - I was without camera and saw the most breathtaking sunset of my whole life - it was a Turner painting! I have regretted missing it ever since.
-
Summer buddies
My boy is on the right.
-
Jamis - kids, love em! (sometimes! LOL) - popsicles as ever - a source of much enjoyment!
OK here are a few more to keep things rolling. First - my ''pet'' frog decided again this morning to be on lily pad guard duty and tho flower was not fully out seemed worth a pic - focus is on frog dude and so flower a tad unsharp.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On a different theme entirely - Bonnie and I enjoyed a 100 mile plus bike run today - good weather and a great ride out with some good folks. Before we left I noticed the reflection of our friend's HD showing nicely in the chrome on mine so - a coupla pics. This one is several reflections.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And here just concentrating on the one, zoomed in tighter.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Doyle Drive, looking out over the inlet. I need to get a better camera, I love this stuff.
Looking Northeast at the corner of California and Broderick.
My Mom's Pet Bird.
-
Winston,
Yeah, you should get a better camera! However, there's a certain artistic "something" that I actually like about the grainy, blur of the second pic especially. It seems like it fits well somehow.
brad cook
-
Winston - all things considered those pics really are remarkable. I agree with Brad on that second one - it has a certain ''feel'' which is quite effective.
My frog decided yet again to give me more opportunities today - this time he was closer to one of the flowers - so, just had to shoot a new pic.!!!
-
Beautiful photos, P95, as always.
I would have been able to post some nifty photos, but my camera was temperarily conviscated by my officers. Apparently, some gun bunnies got the bright idea to wonder into my perimeter. (First mistake) They didn't have night vision goggles, we did. (Second mistake) It's a bit embarassing to suddenly realize that you have been surrounded for the last five minutes by the opposition, and they're not amused.
Their commander volunteered to pay a case of beer per head to get his soldiers back. Gods only know how much those poor soldiers were harassed when they got back to their unit. Only one thing in this world tastes better than free beer, and that's beer paid for by officers.
-
Ok this was many many summers ago. I only wish I could still fit into those leathers. Since they still collect dust thanks to my fat thighs and dickydo
-
Is that bike a big ''Duke''???
I sweat too much to manage leathers and anyways - I am now of an age for cruisers only - crotch rockets were - well - many moons ago!!!
-
yeah that was on the final week of my 30day tag of my '97 916
Taken at Rocky Mountain National Park, on my way to Steamboat springs.
Some nice guys on BMWs offered to take the pic for me.
Hey your never too old for a crotch rocket I read about a 65yo guy who did the Iron Butt Rally on an old slabside GSXR.
Now that's tough!
-
65yo guy who did the Iron Butt Rally on an old slabside GSXR
.
Good for him!!! Well - I have two probs - first a crappy ol' back and that would have been for me the ''Sore Butt Rally'' LOL! Second - I smashed my left elbow in 1999 and can no longer ''ride on my wrists'' so - I graciously accept my geriatric status now on my cruiser - suits me!
Actually even my son at the tender age of 28 has gotten rid of his SV650 and has also joined the cruiser ranks!
Stay safe.
-
Every photo in this thread deserves the adjective "fantabulous." Reason? All of them, both singly and in concert, get their point across and do it exceptionally well.
Something tells me I need to lighten up on the job searching and take a day or two off to get some photoing ( ) done.
-
Just a taste of my Sunday.. at Heartland Park Topeka helping my friend (#273)out
BTW P95Carry... most of my pictures from the event ended up a bit darker than expected. I'm assuming it was due to too much light that confused the cameras auto fstop and focus. Any PS settings I should look at besides playing with the color levels and contrast/brightness settings?
This one only had the RGB levels tweaked
-
Very nice pic there - obviously a good enough shutter speed. RGB looks OK re saturation.
I have to always remember how different monitors affect image reproduction but on mine here that pic needs a strong lift for brightness, contrast seeming pretty adequate. I'd certainly play with it some more.
I just had to meddle - and so this was a strong brightness lift and a small addition of contrast. Be interested to know if it looks too bright for others - to me it appears about right, as it was obviously a sunny day.
-
Looks much better.
brad cook
-
Ok, you guys made me dust off the digital camera and give it a try. Here's a pic I just took on my porch...
-
yeah that does look better. After I sent it I was thinking I should have played with the brightness.. I always worry about having it look too washed out though.
Here is one playing with all the neat filters on PS
oops after looking at it I realized I should have included the shadow in the selection... oh well I better get the housework done instead.
-
Haha - let the creative juices flow!
-
Not a picture taken by me (as I'm the one with my thumbs up!) but still one from the summer and a very enjoyable time -
-
Great pic! You were obviously well happy with the ''gravity'' of the situation LOL
That's what I call freedom !
-
Chris,
Please leave the puns to Peter.
-
Haha - but Peter is my pun mentor donchaknow! I am still learning - and practicing, always hoping ''the maestro'' will approve! :d
-
Kind of different, but still a 'summer pic'. A little self portrait I did on the bus:
-
What a beautiful moon tonight nearly full.
Tomorrow is the full moon.
Any suggestions on how to capture a good shot?
This was only one of the many I took that came out decently.. the rest the camera would take blurry shots.
-
you can get the idea of the shot I was trying to get with this one
My camera has limited settings..
-
Moon does tend to mean - tripod! Plus it is surprising how fast it moves - relative sense - if doing a time exposure. Your first two are actually very acceptable - but camera-shake is a big enemy, viz that last one. Once shutter speeds get down low - it is hard to avoid without tripod.
Plus - longer the lens - meaning if you zoom in - the worse it gets. The old rule-of-thumb used to be - shutter speed at least, equal to focal length - this was in 35mm film days of course.
So - if using full zoom, equivalent to say, 200mm - then 1/200 second exposure hand held is minum to cope with camera shake. 1/150 of course better.
Astro subjects are never too easy.
-
That was at 400.. and it was by hand. I just have a desktop tripod. I'll have to break that out for tomorrow.
Let's see what kinds of moon shots everyone can get for the full moon. THere should be some good opportunities.
-
Veloce,
My first thought on that first moon photo was, "HEY! That looks like Elliott and E.T!"
-
I can't claim credit for this pic but hey - this is what I'd like to achieve. Will keep an eye on sky and see what gives. It's what I'd LIKE to achieve!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well - just a few minutes ago went out to check and took a few - lot of whispy cloud but this one came out not too bad - so here it is - tho even at 200mm full zoom - not all that great.
-
Well he grew up and got a better bike ...
Ok its cheezy I was just bored
-
Veloce - haha - you must be ''over the moon'' with that pic LOL
-
Veloce - haha - you must be ''over the moon'' with that pic LOL big_smile
You know, Chris - May I call you Chris - you see, Chris, everyone here thinks that you have problems. This is an intervention. We feel these puns are hurting you and - more importantly - all of us.
-
All I can say is there better not be any ass involved in these full moon shots.
brad cook
-
We feel these puns are hurting you and - more importantly - all of us.
.
Oh my - I am mortified - time to go get some extra lessons from the Preacheman!
Of course you may call me Chris!!
-
I used to be pretty heavy into astrophotography a few years ago. I have some moon pics somewhere but I can't find them right now. Anyway, to get a decent sized image of the moon on 35mm film I was using a 10in telescope at f6.3. That works out to be a lens with about a 1600mm focal length if I remember the formula correctly. P95Carry, it looks like the moon picture you posted was taken through a filter (polarizing maybe).
The moon is pretty bright. Relatively low exposure times can be achieved even at high f numbers, but with long focal lengths you can really see the atmosphere "swimming" in the view finder. You'll need a nice still, low humidity, night and time to make a bunch of exposures to get a really good, crisp, photo. Try and pick a night in the middle of several consecutive days of calm clear skies. These tend to be the most stable. Live on a mountain or in the desert, great! Live in Michigan like me, you take what you can get.
If you can, avoid shooting pictures over your house, garage, or anything that heat may be rising from. If the sun has been heating the ground or the roof of your house all day, try and give them some time to get closer to the ambient temperature.
Try to get away from any extraneous light sources. Nice dark skies are not needed when photographing the moon. Light polluted cities are fine, but find a place away from stray light. Your neighbors floodlight isn't going to do your pictures any good and you can get some really weird artifacts from off axis light sources like cars driving buy, etc.
Obviously you want a good stable mount, a cable release, and the fastest shutter speed you can get. Since the exposure time is going to be pretty low you can get away with the camera not tracking the moon across the sky.
Open up your lens as far as possible. Unless you have really good lenses, a good indicator is the price tag, you might want to stop it down one stop as most lenses are optically better in the middle. ED or apochromatic glass in your lenses is preferred but not necessary. Pictures of the moon tend to be very high in contrast. Lenses that are not "color corrected" can add a blue or rainbow hue at the edge of bright objects.
If you're using an SLR and it has a mirror lock up feature, use it. This eliminates one source of vibration in the camera. When photographing planets I used to do something called the "hat trick." Use something like a hat to cover the lens without touching it. Trip the shutter and wait for the vibrations to abate. Move the hat to start the exposure, return the hat in front of the lens, and close the shutter. This can be used in place of a cable release but consistent short exposures are going to be difficult. The "hat trick" is better for longer exposures but everything you do to remove camera motion gives you a slightly crisper picture if your equipment is up to the challenge.
This wont help with digital cameras, but I always used black and white film for the moon as it is finer grained than color film and the moon is pretty black and white anyway. If you are using film, use the lowest possible ISO number that still allows a reasonable shutter speed. The higher the ISO, the grainier the film.
When the moon is near the horizon and it looks huge, it's an optical illusion. It's angular size is the same when it's directly overhead. You should get a better picture shooting as close to the zenith (straight up) as possible. One of the reasons is that your camera simply has less atmosphere to see through than when shooting near the horizon.
One last thing I learned from moon pictures and astrophotography, good moon pictures always wow the average person more than galaxies and nebulas. Everyone knows the moon; few know what that obscure cloud of dust or the million light year away galaxy are.
Here's a pic I took of NGC7000 (North American Nebula) one summer a few years ago (300mm f/2.8, 45min exposure, probably unhypered Kodak PPF)...
-
Some more of my pictures. These were taken today, on Yellow Fork multiuse trail, here in the Salt Lake valley.
(yes, that is a lizard....)
-
Jamis - thank you - very pleasing pics (not sure about the lizard LOL).
Jeff - thanks too for your input - very useful pointers to those wanting to get those sorta shots. That nebula pic is excellent - and ''only'' a 300mm - impressive!
My moon pic - just the small one I took of course! - had no filter and was taken as I think I said at full zoom, 200mm but the original pic is some 2560 x 1920 so this is just cropped out. I did tho convert to grayscale as a slight yellowness was unhelpful. I did as often in these cases - shoot about five or six off a tripod with release and bracketted those - selecting what exposed best. The atmospheric density factor makes one exposure for all times impractical, so have to bracket.
-
Chris,
We are all mooning over your pics. (I'm so sorry, my keyboard has a mind of its own)
-
Hehe - careful which direction you ''moon'' - might be called a ''bike rack'' LOL
-
I found the night setting on my digcam.. so I played around a bit. I misse dthe moon though
-
That first one works rather well (it appears the mmon is showing tho, thru the trees) - the second is not so successful. That said - time exposures of night highways can yield some interersting results.
-
yeah it looks that way.. except that's a street light
-
Haha - streetlight eh - well had wondered but- the effect is good! Sorry about my typo's previously BTW - lazy figners
-
Jamis - thank you - very pleasing pics (not sure about the lizard LOL).
.
Thanks. There were some Cacti in bloom, but that section of trail was quite rocky and I was concentrating on not falling over, otherwise I might have stopped to shoot 'em.
Ah, the joys of tight, twisty singletrack!

What lovely pictures. I loved all of them, even the winter ones.
Mike Irwin did you ever shoot IPSIC in Ohio? Maybe in the 80s? My husband and I put on IPSIC matches at Butler County and also shot in Dayton in the 80s. Your name sounds familar.

Well, this year races on and here we are, another big bike event again.
Just spent a lot of time this weekend (roasting too - it was so very hot!) - at ''Thunder in the Valley'' .... bike week at Johnstown PA. The town gets saturated with bikes from all over - more than you can shake a stick at!!! First coupla pics are just to give some ''flavor'' but really give no real clue as to the massive density of bikes all over town. The third one is a rather nice and unusual graphic on one of the many 100's of hogs!
It was so hot that even riding with air flowing past - it was still too hot! Still - could have been ruined by rain so - we lucked out really, like last year.
(Winston - more interesting pics of yours - thx).
Oh one more pic - each year a team of guys come along and do some trick riding - most of them real young. Some of what they do is riding with two inside a 14" steel globe - clever stuff. But the big trick is doing a back flip - and all this within an area not really much bigger than a tennis court.
Unfortunately tho I thought I'd selected a good position for pics - they did the flips at opposite end from last year so - a sorta back view and not helped by pole and transformer in the way either. At top left of pic is the top of the Johnstown inclined plain - I believe at some 48º the steepest grade incline in the nation.
-
Some more "summer" pics I took yesterday.....
....Okay, so I took them at 11,000 feet....so what
There is still 70+ inches of snow mid-mountain at Snowbird resort. 4th of July weekend will be thier last ski weekend of the year!

Jason - great pics!!! Excellent contribution, thx.
My - that is some beautiful scenery you have there. The #2 and 3 shots are breathtaking stuff. Love the bungee too - that must be one loada fun!

Thanks! We bet the kids $2 for the first one to do a sommersault. They had a blast.
I can leave my house and be at the ski resorts in 45 minutes. Even summer up there is spectacular....tall trees, woods, wildlife...it is amazing!

Took a bike ride around and across the bridge the other day.

Time for a nudge!!
Some fireworks for you - last night in town. Slightly ''enhanced''.!

Great stuff jefnvk - thx for the contribution. Nice work.
I have only just gotten back from a quick browse around our local fire hall ''do'' - they have an event which for a small community is very successful and well attended, made better by A1 weather - hopefully just as good for tomorrow.
Classic cars, bikes, tractors - loadsa stuff. The money they make from this goes towards their costs - great to see it well supported. Once I have looked thru a few pics I took, I'll post some to give a flavor of the event.
-
Well - here is some flavor of the Alum Bank Firehall event. A typical example of a great rural PA small-town type event. Lottsa good folks, lots to see and a good time for all.
First some auto stuff - there were a great many very nicely restored classics and also some very smart hotrods. This machine is one I had not seen locally before, furnished with two inline motors ... only wish I'd heard it running!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another very smart under-hood power unit - not as you can see too much room to spare!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This Harley trike was built up over about two and more years - I spoke to the guy who owns it at Thunder in the Valley in Johnstown last month. He has IIRC $43k in it!! Beaut' paint job.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And here is the paint job on the ''trunk'' - very nice work IMO. The spotty appearance BTW is due to the sun's effect on a small amount of flake in the whole paint job.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another four to come - watch this space.
-
Larry Ashcraft shoulda been here to see some of this stuff - more old tractors than you could shake a stick at.
Also some very well preserved and functional stationary engines, this one in particular is fascinating and was running. The beam reciprocates and lifts a column of water each cycle - great!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This old Fordson was I reckon the oldest tractor there - ran beautifully, tho a bit jerky when on the move!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This tracked tractor had been beautifully restored - it's an Oliver ''Cletrac" - a contraction IIRC of the old Cleveland Tractor Co.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And finally, a shot showing part of the parade - all being commentated on by the guy in the green shirt to the left.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hope this conveys just a small ''feel'' for the occasion. One of many thinks that make summer rather special.
.
-
Say jefnvk any chance we'll be able to see some launch pictures?
I was hoping to make it to the launch.. but since the date changed so much it messed up our plans.
(with my fingers crossed)
I'm hoping to have time to edit and upload some of the pictures I took at Niagra Falls this 4th.
Dang lawn work comes first though :p
-
Wow. Thanks Chris for pointing me this way (took a week to open on dial up at home).
Yep, the stationary engines are a trip. I have spent several weekends with my tractors and the other guys with their tractors, engines and such, special memories. The parades are especially fun, kind of a culmination of all those hours of work. We have one member who builds 1/4 scale RUNNING models of those engines.
That Fordson, its a wonder it survived, they weren't very good tractors. The old timers used to say: "I can't believe anything that would get that hot in the summer, can still freeze up in the winter".
The lead tractor in the parade is a single front John Deere A or B, I can't tell. The mounted cultivators add nice visual interesst (and make me believe it is a B). I can't tell the year without seeing the frame, so it could be anywhere between 1938 and 1952.
The tractor behind the JD is, I believe, a Allis-Chalmers WD-9, a good heavy duty unit. But you'll notice, it is still behind the John Deere.
-
Say jefnvk any chance we'll be able to see some launch pictures?
Well, I suppose I could snap some pics of it on my TV
Wish I could have stayed and watched, or the launch would have been one week earlier. Just my luck. Seeing a shuttle launch has always been something I wanted to do.
-
The tractor behind the JD is, I believe, a Allis-Chalmers WD-9, a good heavy duty unit. But you'll notice, it is still behind the John Deere.
.
Bwhahahahah - love it!!! I am not good at telling ''A'' from ''B'' Larry on those - not being an afficionado but, sure as heck I love seeing this stuff preserved. So many folks get a lotta pleasure seeing them. The idea of 1/4 scale sounds great - something about working stuff scaled down - almost more fascinating.
Sorry about download time if you had to use dial-up. I try to keep my pics around 60k or less but a thread like this can be a bit ''heavy''!! Hope now tho your cache will hold the pics a while if you drop back in.
-
After perusing that picture some more... That is a B, unless the driver is an overly huge fella.
Chris, your info on the Cletrac is spot on, AFAIK. Here is a bit of old tractor history: The two big dozer/crawler manufacturers in the 1920's were HOLT and BEST. They were fierce competitors for many years until they finally decided to merge and end the hostilities.
The name of their new company? CATERPILLER.
I really really need to start a thread on old tractors.
-
I really really need to start a thread on old tractors.
.
Darned good idea Larry - I for one would love to learn a bit more.
Hey, Just by chance I took bike out to swing by the firehall again about an hour ago - traffic was stopped. I sneaked to side near main red light, parked up, and watched the parade. This constituted, firetrucks from all surrounding districts, several sheriff's cruisers, kids with their batons, and, ALL the tractors!!!! Musta been over 30 minutes plus for all to get by.
What did I notice?! In total - boatloads of John Deeres as well as other varieties - man you would have freaked out!
-
Just a little fun fact: The first time I paraded tractors, my son, Jim, drove my JD 40 in the parade, alongside me with my AR.
Parade was over and Jim had to get back on Elizabeth St. to head home (I was ahead of him). He stopped at the stop sign and panicked. There was no way to get into traffic with my 40 (10 MPH max).
A cop saw him and stepped out onto Elizabeth and stopped ALL traffic until he was well underway. Jimmy (14 years old at the time) was well impressed at the attention the little JD got him. Gotta love the Pueblo PD, knowing what was important at the time.
I love this town.

Ok here are some Niagra shots... I hope they are not too large

A stream about 30 minutes from the house. You know it is summer because there is water, and the road is open. This is in Glacier Nat Park.
Mr Billy, losing his winter coat.
The wildflowers are blooming at the lower elevations.
A sculpture outside where I work. This was at sunrise. There is a buffalo, a warrior, a dog, a bear, and an elk all underneath a soaring eagle. It was made with scrap metal that fit without bending or cutting. He puts his pieces together like a jig saw puzzle, if it fits he uses it. If not he wont reshape.

-
Hey, where at are those pics in Glacier? I haven't been there in a few years, but it looks familiar. If you get off into the backcountry there, off that tourist-ridden Going to the Sun road, you can see some absolute spectacular views. 100 times better than anything on the road, whih is still pretty good.
-
Actually, these are just off of the Going to the Sun Road. The secret to avoiding the tourists is to go up in early June or wait until September.
We usually stay away in the real summer, we go to other places nearby instead.
This is the big drift. We didn't get a lot of snow last winter. This is usually twice as high this time of year.
When the snow starts to melt, you get quite a few courses of water.
Looking out over a grove of aspen.

Not exactly a summer pic, here's my daughter letting the waves chase her on a trip with her Mom and stepdad.

Oh my - great additions. Veloce - beaut' pics of the falls- still hope to see them one day but as ever, ''carry factors'' deter me!!!
Bob - also some great pics - magnificent grandeur you have up there - thx for posting.
Grisly - nicely captured moment.
Wife and I rode out with some buddies today - did about 135 mile trip and went to visit ''Indian Caverns'' PA, (Along R 45 which runs from R 22 close to Huntingdon clear up to State College and beyond) - interesting formations inside a limestone peak. I took some pics there and will post any that might be interesting later on.
-
Ah! That is why those scenes look so familiar.
The best kept secret in that park is Lake Elizabeth. If any of you get to the park, go there. It is a 12 mile walk in, keeping most people out, but it has absolutely plentiful big grayling and rainbow trout. Some of the best fishing I have ever done.
-
Well - a few pics to give a flavor of ''Indian Caverns PA'' - there is much evidence of their use by Indians a long ways back, tho now more has been opened up to view.
To get really good pics would require studio lighting - here we have direct flash which actually is crap for useful lighting! These pics tho do show some of the fascinating formations, made of course over many 1,000's of years. The last pic shows a formation that understandably has been christened ''Madonna".

Great stuff Grisly - she will do well

Butterfly who came to visit , and spent the night on the screen door.
Ray
-
Riley - you have some beautiful coastline available - makes me think back to all the great beaches I used to know in SW UK - one of which had some remarkeable geo formations. maybe if I can find a pic I'll post it outa interest.
Good subject Ray - one of my favorites. Superb creatures but hard to get good pics unless they do as this one - settle and stay put a while!! Nice.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey Ray - you know my proclivity for meddling? - Well thought the butterfly needed to show its colors a bit more so tweaked a bit to enjoy more of the full color - or at least an approximation!
-
Wife felt sorry for me, after I dropped my Camera in a creek....so I got a new one the very next day....
This is looking down on an almost 2000' climb I had just ascended. Nothing like wanting to just drive your bike off the side of the hill and die....Its about a 7% gradient. At least the downhill is a riot!
My kid playing on a big tree in Park City
My kid and my Brother.
Jason - I am breakin' out in a sweat just thinkin' about that 2,000 foot climb!
Jason - I am breakin' out in a sweat just thinkin' about that 2,000 foot climb!
They did two of them today in Le Tour...at about twice the speed that I can manage it in....
I really don't like climbing...I'm a better sprinter!
-
Ok, so how do you post pics here again?
-
Fudgie - you will need to have pics hosted - your own server or maybe just somewhere like photobucket.com. Then you place the hotlink within ''img'' tags.
-
Ok, so how do you post pics here again?
You need a photo host. Alot of us are using www.Photobucket.com
Once you've got some pics uploaded, copy the BB code and paste it in here to post pics.
Hows about a misty dusk on the Pine River?
Or a nice Brown Trout off that Pine River?
-
Nice Brownie! I make it to be about 20"....
-
What a superb fish - nice dusk shot too.
-
I like your guess, Jamis, but a bit over 16". Caught that last night, and two more this morning the same size. Never caught that many that size in such a short period of time before. Plus a nice 10-12" rainbow that took the liberty of releasing itself as I was maneuvering it into the creel, and a couple of 8-10" Brownies.
#4 Rainbow Trout Panther Martin was the lure of the trip.
Still a nice fish.
Did you see this one, from page one?
Caught in about 1' of water on a pink scud. About 18"
-
That fish has some good girth on it. That is getting more to the size that you catch trolling on the Great Lakes, like a lake raised fish, than a stream raised fish.
Ok I will have some good pyro pics once I edit them.
I just got to work the concert in the sky at the Amelia Earhart annual festival in Atchinson,KS
What a show!! It's the largest fireworks show in the state of KS. But first here is a nice sunrise I caught heading to the site.
-
Now THAT is a masterpiece!
-
That is SWEET!
-
Ok as promised.. here are some pyro pics from the Amelia Earhart festival.
I wish I could have taken much more.. but my camera has a slow rate and it was tough to get more than a few shots. That and I wanted to just take in the show I slaved for a week to set up. I have more video clips than anything I'll have to find a place to host them then I'll post some of those clips too. God there really is nothing like 10 and 12" shells shooting off just yards from you And the finale box that was just 5 feet from me (one of 6) was the most intense experience of my life.. 600 3" shots went off in just under 5 seconds. It was like standing next to a minigun on steroids railing off...words can not describe the immense pleasure that gave me Unfortunately my memory card was full just before the finale started.. otherwise I would have had that on video
Here goes.. I hope you don't mind the quanity
My favorite
And finally a few shots of the airshow that went over our heads.. the guy afterthis was much better and flew within 500 feet of us. Too bad I didn't have my camera at that moment
-
Veloce - superb pic - real winner. Beautiful atmosphere - one so often more likely found at sunrise than sunset. Kudos!
I have little to offer that is in the least artistic - just a couple of very similar record pics from today. We had a superb bike run - 330 bikes was the count and our stop point was in case anyone has heard of it - ''The Road Kill Cafe'' - Artemas PA ... south west PA, just a bit above the Mason-Dixonline. Not a large place but by time we had all arrived it was well congested!!
The pics only show a central portion - there were bikes all over!! HOT was the word - I mean steamy hot, so much humidity. Great run tho - thru some very pretty roads, and a pig roast to follow.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just seen the pyro pics Veloce - wow - a few bucks there goin' up in smoke!
-
I created this thread for the vids.. unfortunately putfile.com doesn't allow larger than 10MB so several of the better videos didnt' make it

The Western rim of Redrock Canyon in Vegas.
-
RileyMC,
I would really like a larger version of that last coastline pic you posted if it would be possible. The larger the better. If you could post a link or just email it to me at bporter@runbox.com (as long as it's under 20MB it's fine as an attachment).
If you can't that's fine too.
-
Summer moon - seems about full tonight - tried another attempt, as sky so clear. Managed a shade more magnification and, tho a bit yellow in color - converted to grayscale. Seems more ''normal'' that way. Probably best I can achieve without super long optics.
-
How about something in the shooting line?
-
That's beautiful, man.
-
That is one real nice long range set-up. Makes me think back to Bisley Ranges, UK.
Just one extra pic for now - could not get this fella in direct sun so lighting a bit flat sadly. Nonetheless, a magnificent speciment IMO - these things are large enough they appear to fly more like a bird than butterfly. This is Echinacia flowers.
-
That is Camp Perry, BTW. Looks like I forgot to mention that.
-
Thx jefnvk - thought it looked a bit good for a private range!
-
Took a pic last summer of one of these guys but noticed this fella round the pond earlier today - took a slew of pics and this one came out quite nicely, despite wind movement and him moving!! Odd thing - he kept coming back to perch on these dead lily flower stems.
-
I don't know what it is , radioactive mutation of a horsefly ? Quarter for scale.
Ray
Nuther view
-
Those things bite, and they HURT.
-
That looks like a Cicadia to me. Never been bit by one.
-
Ray - that front on view has to be a std Cicada - the regular annual one. I have tho seen what appear to be super large horse flies too - no pic to show unfortunately.
-
Ahh , nice to know what it is anyway , thought it was similar to a cicada , but I was thinking of the red eye demons of the 17 year variety. Dog really wants to mess with it .
Hey Chris ! , what week are we on for shooting ? is it .22 this week or PPC ?
Ray
-
Ray - well, I have missed several Wednesdays - it is getting harder to manage for several reasons right now.
I called Bill to confirm that tomorrow is PPC - and hope to go over. That'll be hopefully on the bike - with gas prices I shan't be taking truck over too much any more!
So - next Wed 24 th should be the regular 22 steel shoot.
Oh BTW - don't forget - Saturday is IDPA and Sunday we have the big 22 steel shoot - details for 9am or 1pm IIRC. maybe you got an email from Corey?
-
Not blatantly ''summery'' but something that only occurs in summer months mainly.
Sunday - which was absurdly hot - was a fun-fly at a fairly local club - and a very fine place to fly too with a large area for landing and take off. Between mopping up sweat - almost every minute - flew the planes I had brought.
Rear red one is ''Spacewalker'' with Seito 120 4 cycle motor - cowl left off for convenience. In front of that the red/white one is a ''Ryan STA'' 1/4 scale - also running with a Seito 120.
The background plane is a 1/4 scale Sopwith Pup bipe' powered by a SuperTigre 2000.
For those not intertested in R/C planes - you may yawn and move on
Oops - might help if I added pic link - duh!
`
-
I've always wanted one of those.
Does it annoy anyone else when you are trying to scroll down the page at the same time the pics are loading, and you keep getting shuffled back halfway up?
-
Haha - indeed - even with fairly fast downloads - no sooner landed on post to read than ''flick'' down it goes again! Even when I have the pics cached it still does it.
-
ok looks like i gotta throw a few up here, starting with the purple mountians, some of the same area as Winston's viewed from the other side of the bay
probably my best photo yet, not bad for only 3.2 megapix!!=
the fog that rolls in in the afternoon- although now, later in the summer, it is much higher and thicker. this pic is from July, a common early summer sight, i know it is full on summer when the fog comes in LOW thru the golden gate. wish i would have been able to go back up the hill and take more pics later the same day,
sooner or later i will get the full effect better/
and the Berkeley rose garden . some more of my best photos
-
thorn - thx for those - very nice pic indeed of ''the bridge'' from that low angle - works very well.
-
Phhh...
Enough with the Golden Gate bridge. I'll get you guys some pictures of the Mackinaw Bridge.
-
i know too many bay shots.
i need to get out and find some better summer. ARgh! we're kinda in mid non summer now though- we seem to get very little summer in late july/ august, but it comes back in late sept/ october for a few weeks.
i show you all what late summer grows like around here but it would probably upset some of you.....
maybe i will get to a party and take a pic eventually (a really wild party)
-
Wow this thread is getting painful, even with comcast cable...I feel for anyone with dial up.
More mountain biking:
Little Dell aka Mormon Pioneer trail.
Meuller park trail, overlooking Bountiful Utah.
Millcreek trail:
Road bike shot:
Look ma, no hands
Spotted this fella hoggin the road
-
Jamis - great! You have some beaut' scenery to ride in.
It'd be good if folks would post pics around 50-60k size - which is usually plenty enough - even for 700 pix max I usually post. True dial-up is not fun with this heavyweight material!
-
JamisJockey,
errr, the first one, that's not a trail, that's a creek .
Nice pics! The 1050, is that how many miles that you've ridden?
Wayne (I don't have have any good pics to post yet)
-
Nope, thats the time of day.
That route on that day is a 35ish miler. I've had that computer for about 2 months and have 970 miles on it. That doesn't count mountain biking, performed on another bike.
-
Mid State Cruisers in Atascadero this weekend
This the county Sheriff's armored vehicle
Interesting note: Both CHP and the local PD carry 870's AND AR's in their vehicles. That's new.
-
Some great pics you guys have put up , nifty cars Riley.
I seem to have a fascination with bugs this year , I guess you take the targets that present themselves ?
Went out back to pick so berries with the wife , turns out some of them had a quite effective guard !
-
Riley - some fine auto's there - always good to see. Interesting too re the 870's and AR's!!
Ray - that fella looks like he may have some serious attitude!! Great pics.
-
Took a ride up to the the redwoods in the Santa Cruz mountains.
Hiked up to the top of the mountain, a place called "Buzzard's Roost"
And, as luck would have it, there was a buzzard up there
Saw a colorful farmhouse on the way
And got 43.81 mpg
-
Off Brockway Mountain, in the Keewenaw
Part of Jacob's Falls:
A view off a cliff by Dover Creek:
Big waterfall on Dover creek:
I can't wait for my SLR to get here!
-
More thanks! Keeping the thread alive nicely and we have a great collection.
I reckon soon tho I'll have to start a Fall Pics thread followed by a Winter one.
-
Both CHP and the local PD carry 870's AND AR's in their vehicles.
Yeah... Atascadero PD has been carrying ARs for a few years now. Officers with ARs dragged a kid out of my classroom last year. Seems pretty militaristic for such a small town... I saw an officer with an X26 taser the other day. There's also too friggin many of them here.
-
Here's a blimp that passed over the house 10 minutes ago. I have no idea what it's advertising, if anything.
-
Hehe - Riley - your guess is as good as mine!! Great pic tho! Cheerios perhaps??
I have not long been back from a great bike run - wonderful early fall weather too - all day and also into evening with excellent fireworks. Here are some pics to show some ''flavor'' - first is this great lil kid on his small electric powered bike - boy, is he gonna get his Harley as soon as he's old enough!!!
Other two, from this evening - coupla guys burnin 'out - always guaranteed to please the crowds tho heck - I couldn't waste my rear tire that way!
-
Hey everyone...Some of you are darn good photographers.
As some may have read, I bought a new dSLR recently. I'm still learning the post processing of RAW photos, but I think this pic represents an accurate digital reproduction. It's a painting my father did for my house. As soon as I figure out how to do sunsets correctly, I'll post some more.
I know it's not summer oriented, but I'm just looking for some feedback.
Enjoy.
Ed
Edit: Added the second photo which I took today. I think the black and white enhanced the feeling of this photo.
-
Wow, that's really good!
-
Good stuff Ed - I used to work B/W stuff and still find it a very satisfying genre. Nice painting too!
-
jefnvk,
Do you ever get up to the Jampot the Brothers run on the way to Brockaway Mt.?
-
Do you ever get up to the Jampot the Brothers run on the way to Brockaway Mt.?
The what now?
-
One more: Sunrise on Beale Air Force Base, CA.
Somebody critique me...does this look decent?
-
Ed - I like it a lot - it has a sorta monochrome look - but like sepia and this for me works very nicely. Good pic. Guess on reflection you did ''sepia it''!!! It works well.
I had some fun flying at weekend so - still summer - some pics.
First is my own four ''toys'' then - a mega toy - Hanger 9 Sukoi - 33% I think - gas powered and flies beautifully. Made better by the guy flying being a real expert - great to watch. Several knife-edge and inverted flights right down strip only just off the ground.
-
Jefnvk,
The Jampot. A retail bakery outlet of an Eastern Rite monastary overlooking Superior on a road north out of Hancock heading to Copper Harbor. Might be a county road along the western side of the Keeweenau. The Brothers sell jams, juices, candies, fruitcakes and cakes liberaly dosed with brandy. I went there once when swmbo and I were on our annual October anniversary jaunt in the UP. I ate so much of their stuff I turned into an inebriated pimple.
-
So I got a photobucket account, read all that stuff and am just as stumped as before.
There has to be a simpler way to post a pic on the thread. I have printer/scanner. Is there not some simple way to scan a photo and paste it on this thread?
Frustrated and perplexed grampster with neat pics to share.
-
Ah, now I know what you speak of. Been past it a few times, keep meaning to stop, but haven't yet.
As for the pics, I don't think there is an easy upload pic feature here like on THR.
-
Dick - if you have a Photobucket account now it should be easy. Each pic you have stored/hosted will have a unique URL (address) - and that should be findable by either right clicking on the pic, to view properties or maybe even it'll be available some other way.
Once you have the pic URL - place that here between ''img'' tages - using ''[]'' these brackets. To dummy up a spoof link I'll use curly braces. --
