Shoe strings for combat boots - source?
« on: October 28, 2010, 06:28:59 PM »
The boots I was issued in the service were supplied with very hard, durable strings that lasted for quite some time. Most boots I find commercially (even combat boots) have a looser, softer string that seems to wear out more easily, or even fray immediately.

Has anyone else noticed this, and can anyone suggest a source for the first type of string?

I've seen paracord recommended for boots. How well does that work?

I bought a couple hundred feet of some sort of knock off para cord to replace all my boot laces and it works great.  It is not the 550 cord style with all the smaller inner strings, it is a single inner cord with a very heavy outer sheathing.  There is no wear showing on them at all after a couple of months.  My boots would always cut the outer sheathing on the factory ones.

I got mine at the local army/navy surplus store.

I thought what I bought was some sort of earth tone pattern but after I did my boots I realized it was woodland camo and really looks like it on the boots.  I realize those are pretty much the same thing, but you know what I mean!

Fistful, why do you want to look like a prostitute?  ???  :P

I've used paracord on one pair of boots. Worked just fine until I outgrew them.

Rawhide laces are available from many sources.

I'm not sure exactly how hard/soft the laces you are describing are but Clothing Sales sells the Brigade Quartermaster laces.  I'm not a leet ninja operator but they've served me just fine in the field and through deployment.

I have some extra orange bailing twine I can send you.  Comes free with the hay.  If it wears out, no big deal, I can get more with every bail we open.
