Heritage Rough Rider .22?
« on: August 10, 2018, 10:09:49 AM »
I see that Fleet Farm has them on sale for $119, it looks like a copy of the Ruger Single-Six. Does anyone have any knowledge of these in terms of quality?

I tried to buy one a couple of years ago when Cabela's had them on sale.  They are illegal in Minnesota; MN calls them "Saturday Night Specials" because (IIRC) the frame is not steel.
"It's good, though..."

(watching.   My local FFL offered me one at $125.)

Seem poorly made & poorly finished. Steel barrel liner & cylinder in a die cast frame & barrel shroud. Accurate enough for plinking. my youngerest bought one last year & has a couple three hundred rounds through it, hasn't loosened up yet.

That's pretty much what I figured at that price point, I haven't seen one up close, but I think I'll pass on it.

There are a lot of them out there, and most people seem satisfied with them. Note that the Heritage includes a funky manual safety, which is universally reviled. Construction aside, I would never consider one because of the safety.

I have one that came with the 22 mag cylinder as well as the 22 LR.  IMO, they make good snake guns if you just want to have something handy.  Mine has the 22 mag cylinder with CCI snake shot.

I also hate safeties where they don't belong.
I have a Rossi 92 with a safety- I wish I would have removed it the last time I had the rifle apart. There is pretty much no way of knowing if the safety is on or off in dim light.

The heritage is an import from Europe. Seems everything they can own has to have a manual safety.

These folks make a nice peep sight that replaces the bolt mounted safety. I've seen a couiple. Going to order one up if I ever gaet a round tuit.

They're meh. If you need one to keep by the back door for snakes and such, sure. If you need a dedicated plinker, pass. The materials aren't very good and they wear at about the same rate as a motorcyclist's butt on asphalt. I've seen more than one non-abused medium mileage sample with so much play in the cylinder I'm surprised the bullet was exiting the bore intact.

I didn't realize they aren't made in the U.S. What's the country of origin?

Fifty something years ago I bought a J.P. Sauer .22 six-gun that had mystery alloy construction. Made in West Germany. It looked a lot more finished than the Rough Riders do, and it shot very nicely. Unfortunately, when I went looking for it after a couple of moves, I couldn't find it.

This one isn't mine, but mine looked exactly the same.
