I like it.

Personally, I prefer strings with all white lights, but that little guy thing looks cute.

I like white or solid colors and the more elegant displays as well, but I don't think this little tree really has "elegance" going for it.  Especially with the star flopping over.

I don't think black lights play well for Christmas.

I don't know. Could be kind of groovy. *snicker*

Black Christmas trees are apparently the "in" thing this year. And people were giving Melania grief about her red trees...

Oh, I was about to ask about the pics you promised.

Very cute.  Kind of "kid dressing up in Pop's outrageously oversized suit and hat" cute.

Except for the hat.

Oh, and a shoe.

When I was little, maybe 7, GE came out with Satin-Glo and Satin-Bright bulbs. They were only made for a few years, but they were absolutely gorgeous. They gave out an incredible, warm, glow and were absolutely beautiful on the tree.

I loved those lights. The last one finally burned out about 10 years ago, right around the time my Dad died, maybe the last Christmas before he died, and I really felt as if the last part of my childhood had ended.

Satin lamps:
http://yulelights.com/ge/jsp_pg2.htm

I didn't see anything particularly exciting about them.  Just had a partially colored envelope (click on the light switch) so you could see the filament directly.  What am I missing?

The metallic coating on the bulbs gave them a unique look.  I actually remember those from my grandparents tree.

Proving there's a market for everything, you can still buy them on ebay.

"Just had a partially colored envelope (click on the light switch) so you could see the filament directly.  What am I missing?"

No. If you watched that guy's video, as he repeatedly said, the only reason you can see the filament is because of the camera itself. OK, wait, the video was somewhere else... maybe linked to that page, maybe not, but yeah, it's the camera picking up the filament. You could not see the filament.

Satin-Brights were opaque when lit. This picture gives you an idea as to how opaque they were:

The metallicized coating not only gave them that unique, satin look when they were off, it gave the light they cast a very soft, "satiny" glow when they were on.

We had a bunch of them, but not enough to light the whole tree (our trees were always 8 to 10 feet high and quite wide, benefits of living in an old house in a fairly rural area with lots of Christmas tree farms close by).

Friends did have a tree that had all Satin-Brights, only theirs was all gold and blue because the Dad was a retired Navy officer. The effect was absolutely breath taking.

A couple of years ago I had some long discussions with the owner of that page regarding Christmas lights. I was, for a time, collecting them. I had quite a few sets, including a lot of older Noma sets.

Interesting tidbit... Noma, which at one time was the largest manufacturer of holiday lighting in the world... it was owned by a group of Jewish men...

Actually even used some of them at times.

Unfortunately, virtually all of them are gone, along with my vintage Christmas ornaments, and pretty much all of my family's Christmas ornaments. I couldn't find them before I had to clean out the house.

I wonder if they started out as lamps for menorahs for chanukka.  A tidbit thought, is all.

Well, OK, I'll believe everybody that the lamps gave a unique and impressive display, but I'd like to see them in person someday.

Both the dog and the bush look adorable in lights.

Has the neighbor kid seen the tiny bush-tree yet?

If anyone is interested, this is a pretty good history of Noma.

I assume so. Despite sharing an easement, we don't have much to do with the neighbors. Too be honest, I don't like them all that much (hippie liberal idiots) but the kid is cute enough.

However, I get a kick out of my tree which is what is really important.  =D

Well, for what it's worth, I have a night light which holds one of those 7-1/2W bulbs which is on 24-7.  But they're clear.  I guess if I ever come across a satin light, I can try it in the night light socket.

Your tree:  Like.

The Satin-Brights are ramping up in price more and more every year. Big jumps. Not as big as the authentic bubble lights, but prices are markedly higher than they were just a couple of years ago.

One lamp will give you an indication of how they look, but to get a really good indication of what they're like you need a bunch of them. As I said, the tree my friend's parents did in all blue and gold Satin-Brights was incredible.

Now, for something completely different.

This may be the most terrifying and disturbing Christmas decoration I have ever seen...

Yes, I know the picture came in big.

I was going to reduce it... but man, those "eyes" are best seen even biglier!
