Do you donate to charity?
« on: July 16, 2009, 08:28:31 PM »
If so, which one?  Why?  How much?

I'll start.  I've been donating $10 / month to a foundation set up by employees of my employer.  It provides money to individual children who have clinical, health-related needs and no financial means to cover them. My employer matches my contribution 100%.

I'm considering donating to the EFF as well, but I haven't done so yet.

I was an NRA member for many years, but let my subscription lapse while I was in college.  I'd consider signing up again, but have no desire to receive the gargantuan amount of crap they spammed me with last time I was a member.

In addition to the dues I pay to the AL, NRA, and other clubs/groups, I give to Fisher House.  http://www.fisherhouse.org/

And every year I do RMCC Kids & Clays http://www.kidsandclays.com/

Did I mention that Mrs Scout was a NICU nurse and I'm a veteran.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Just time, not money, mostly.

We do contribute a small amount monthly to the local power company's fund for people who can't afford to pay, occasional donations to the local parish, and a couple of times we contributed to an organization that provides supplemental classes in specialized subjects for Catholic families who homeschool.

Various orgs, but my "go-to" charity that gets the lion's share is the Salvation Army:

Church gets its cut, too, but I don't think of that as charity.

I'm pretty in the hole moneywise, so I have been donating time instead of money, but when I have extra money, it goes to the EFF, ACLU and NRA in varying percentages, depending on what the big issue du jour is.   I figure between those 3 orgs, I have everyone hating me for something.  =D

The NRA will not send that crap if you ask 'em.  email membership@nrahq.org (i think) and ask to be put on the do not promote list; and all you'll get is NRA specific stuff, 95% less than usual.

10% to my church.  Other money as we see fit to either the church, or 501c(3)'s of personal interest (e.g. a Raptor Center in Oregon, local charaties, etc), or sometimes anonymously to family or friends.

Way too much.

Try owning a small business and not getting hit up by every charity out there.

Heh... most of my life is given to charity!

I run both the local chapter and the state BoD of BACA Wisconsin (www.bacausa.com)

I'm the only male volunteer for the local Sexual Assault Resource Center

Either this year or next, I'll be undergoing training to act as a CASA volunteer (Court Appointed Special Advocate)

So generally, when someone says I should "give to charity", I get a lil' POed...

1% of my salary to various charities via the Combined federal campaign, plus books and clothes to thrift shops like Salvation Army, plus the Marine heritage Foundation and museum at Quantico.

The wife and I give monthly to St Jude's Children's Hospital.

When were were regular churchgoers we tithed.  But we got sick of seeing our money being used to basically fund a social club rather than doing Charity work.  We moved recently, and are still looking for a place that we feel comfortable with.

Mainly the Boy Scouts and the Wounded Warrior Project.

Smaller donations to a horse rescue agency and a police charity.

My most significant donation annually is to the Salvation Army. I've mentioned the reason in previous threads. While working on the Alaska Air Flight 261 disaster, the Salvation Army just blew me away. There were a number of relief agencies there, but the only time you saw the SA was when you needed them. They were always there to lend a hand, keep everyone fed, and console people dealing with nothing but body parts. The rest of the time they just blended in. Other relief agencies there, like the Red Cross, though helping out, were also practically running a donation campaign while they were there. The dignified response of the SA sold me on them.

I have the option to give to the SA via the Combined Federal Campaign, but don't out of principle. My particular office of the agency I work for not only hounds us about the CFC, but has a non-profit Foundation that they push us to give to that only benefits my agency  (but it's "for the environment!"     ). I find that extremely tacky, plus I already pay Federal taxes.

I'm also an NRA Endowment Member and donate a bit too the NRA/ILA. I also donate a small amount beyond dues to Ducks Unlimited.

Money to the USO.

Items to the Salvation Army, extra food from my garden to the local food bank.

Mostly Salvation Army, VFW, and The 100 Club (supports families of police officers locally who were killed in the line of duty).  I added Texas Children's Hospital recently.  I get letters from 2 or 3 more I don't give to.  I just give what I can when I can.

In addition to a tithe to our church, we also give an additional amount every month to a church fund that is slated 100% for charity. While I occasionally give to other charities, I prefer to give the bulk of my charitable donations to that church fund as no "administrative" costs are taken out of it, 100% of it goes to helping people.

AMBUCS

We give scholarships for physical therapists and donate therapeutic trikes to disabled kids.  Been with the Lubbock Monterey chapter for ten years, board member for eight, and ran our fundraiser restaurant at the South Plains Fair for five, and was the program committee chair for four.
