Ian at FW finally explains his Kaboom
« on: April 19, 2023, 09:28:52 AM »
A few years ago Ian of Forgotten Weapons put up a video explaining the importance of having medical gear on hand and a partner after a gun went KB on him in the middle of the desert. In that video he never said what actually happened. Well 6 years later he finally does.
Long story short two rounds went off in the tube of a reproduction Henry 1860

Trying to find the original video since he didn't put a link up.

Fount it. It was on InRangeTV when he was still making videos with Karl.

I rarely watch any video over ten minutes. I will spmetimes skip through it to see if anything is grabworthy, though.

Upshot?  Pointy bullets in a tube magazine?  Christ, that's been a known no-no (KNN) forever, except for rimfires.  Was that the cause?  Yes or no.

But I guess even round-noses can go off in the tube depending on how full the mag was and how heavy the loads are.

OK on the recommendation on the buddy system, but that could have been said in a few seconds.

I love Ian's videos, but this was just a time sink. (ETA They're well-organized and tersely presented.)

I wonder how anybody gets any actual work done watching all these long-winded videos  on company time.

In this case it wasn't recoil but when he let go of the follower it impacted with enough force to set off the primers.
Flat nose centerfire 45 Colt BTW
Both the follower and loading method on the 1860 is a bit different from 1866 and later lever actions.

Here's the video starting at the point when he explains what he did to set them off.

^  Soft-point, no doubt. Same physics involved.  Don't bang the primer unless you want a bang.  I will admit that releasing the follower on a partially full magazine is a new one on me.

185 seconds until the meat and potatoes.  "Eat your vegetables, Terry."

Seems to me all the "information" about the incident is contained in the words in this thread so far, this being the fourth post.  No video necessary.  Certainly not  (31:53).

I'm just being a crotchety old man at 84 yo.

Funny thing is, I started this Gripe at 10:20 AM and here it is 10:56.

Thirty six minutes.  Jesus, Terry, it's a good thing you can laugh at yourself.

  :old:

I came back in to delete most of that message, but since it's been quoted, tough noogies, Terry.

Took a nap, things look better.  Sorry, Ian.

Terry bows head in shame.

Finally watched it and wow... did he make a VERY huge mistake.

Good on Gun Jesus for taking responsibility for it, but bad on Gun Jesus for taking so damned long to fess up to it.

That seems like a very easy thing to do with that model which explains why most no longer make it.  Thankfully, he wasn't seriously hurt.

Reminds me why I like loading gates.
