Romney endorses Trump
« on: March 03, 2016, 01:32:20 PM »
I can only assume, by attacking him, he's attempting to boost Trump's anti-establishment cred.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/03/03/politics/mitt-romney-presidential-race-speech/index.html

Did he ever attack Obama that forcefully? Will he do the same to Hillary?

I heard all the sound bites and thought the same thing.  If Ol' Mitt was that energetic when he was running, he might be president now.

Seems to be the consensus. On Obama, I think he attacked him almost as badly initially, but then he turned "compassionate conservative" and his attacks turned milquetoast. Had he as forcefully rebutted Obama as he is now doing to another Republican, he might have won in 2012.

As it is, he's just being a cog in the establishment machine, and I'm now not going to be surprised if we end with a brokered convention.

I can't decide who would have been the more pathetic figure to make this Philippic - Romney or ¡Jeb!* If this is a genuine attempt to wrest the nomination away from Trump, it is comical.

I would not have supported Trump normally, although I did get some amusement out of his annoying the GOP establishment never mind the media and Dems. If I had my choice Cruz would be the nominee now that Rand is no more.

That said Romney and McCain and the rest railing against Trump actually sort of makes me want him to win. For years the GOP hasn't listened or just pretended to listen to the independents that lean conservative, Tea Partiers, libertarians, what have you. At this point I'd almost like Trump to win to poke a stick in the eyes of the McCains, Ryans, Romneys, McConnells of the world. They are all squishy conservatives at best and to be perfectly honest I don't see how they can criticize Trump.

They all campaigned one some of the exact same things Trump is and then when or if elected didn't follow through on their promises. So now possibly Trump. Maybe he follows through maybe not, but is he really a worse choice than McCain or Romney was?

He probably saw some of Tony Blair's memorable attacks* on Jeremy Corbyn in the election for the Labour leadership and thought "I can do that".

* where each Blair intervention resulted in Corbyn moving from being rank outsider, to a plausible contender, to winning by an absolute landslide.

If anybody can connect with disaffected GOP base voters and white working class Democrats defecting to Trump, it is Thurston Howell III Mitt Romney.

They deserve a sharp stick in the eye after the shenanigans at the 2012 national convention where they refused to seat elected delegates they didn't like, changed the rules to concentrate power to the national committee, didn't give Ron Paul a prime time speaking slot that he'd earned but instead gave one to a Democrat, etc.  F 'em.

I don't like Trump but I could vote for him.  (I voted Cruz in the caucus for all the good it did) If there's a brokered convention and they draft McCain, McConnell, Boehner , et al, I'm voting Libertarian Party.

This is the best political theater entertainment in a long while. Trump, for now, is the front runner. If he continues his status as that, gaining more delegates and the powers that be try some monkeyass crap at convention, hell, I'll vote a straight democrat ticket.

These asshats are pulling their pants down and mooning the republicans who obviously want a change and actually believe it's their choice. The establishment is showing us that we don't matter. We haven't mattered in quite a long time.

The only way that Trump could blow up the GOP is if the GOPe keeps up this sort of thing.  Trump could still lose fair & square to Cruz and I think Trump would pout and sulk, but eventually deal with it.  But if GOPe pulls shenanigans it will be ugly "Whig Party" time.  Trump goes nuclear, GOP base goes apey, Cruz doesn't know whether to *expletive deleted*it or go blind.

Somebody pointed out today that Trump pledged to support whoever would be the eventual nominee. It seems that should go both ways. Trump seems to think so:

Seems Romney has instructed adviser to plot out ways to derail Trump at convention. And establishment insider say if that happens, the expect Trump to go the 3rd party thang. Exciting.

So the Democrats are running a socialist, and an obvious crook/felon that nobody likes. The GOP is preparing to top itself. The Mid-East is approaching critical mass (more than usual), and Europe is struggling with how to accommodate the hordes of Reavers it seems determined to take in. The Catholic Church has Billy Blabbermouth for a pope, and the Church of England is blessing genderless marriages.

Can someone ask Jesus for an ETA, 'cuz this gettin' ridiklis.

I thought Trump may have missed a good response by not asking if the rest of them would support him.  It was still a pretty silly question to ask.
