Poor guy.  Tough way to go.
Oh, Lord, please let me be as sanctimonious and self-righteous as those around me, so that I may fit in.

What would compel a bear to dig up a buried electrical cable and start chewing on it?

maybe his karma was shockingly out of phase
and he needed to meditate with some ohms

or he was doing some resistance training

or he wanted to do some arc wielding

Maybe Mr. Bear was pining for his buddy Timothy Treadwell and wished to join him?

I suspect that something on the cables smelled edible to the bear.   Maybe the insulation, maybe some wire lube.  Whatever the reason, bummer for the bear.

Yea, I got a close up of his mouth wrapped around the wires. We're talking charred. Very gnarly. There's also a pic of a burnt spot on the ground where apparently the current went from his body to ground. Hopefully he went quick.

That was a while back, about a mile from where I live and pretty much smack in the heart of Los Anchorage.  There are a LOT more brown bear wandering around these streets than anyone realized.

No.  There's one native tribe that hunts them in the winter for ceremonial purposes and I believe eats some of them, but otherwise you'd have to be very hungry.  Black bear fed on grass and berries is another matter, though.
