I was stationed at Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station with the 1st MARBDE during the Mayaguez incident.  It was common knowledge there that some of our people had been left behind.
Rumor had it that one of the guys in my recruit platoon participated in that event.  There is someone with the same first initial and last name that received the Navy Commendation medal.

If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

It seems odd to me that someone would say they disobeyed orders to get on the last chopper.

In a situation like that, it may have been a case of conflicting orders.  Two or more sets of orders, and they chose the wrong one to obey.  And who's to say that if they hadn't stayed behind their gun, more Marines might have died.

It's also possible that Captain James Davis threw them to the wolves and lied to cover his own ass.

This makes my soul hurt.

There is enough blame to go up and down the chain of command, from the squad leader to the Task Force Commander.   Everyone is culpable for not getting an accurate head count and then not going back after them.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

From what they said, all the helicopters were shot up.  They didn't have anything to go back with if they wanted to.

Which means the operation didn't have enough support.  Probably should have had patrol boats available.  However, I don't know the circumstances at the time.

Sad closing chapter for a complete goatrope of a war.
