Protesters Interrupt Bush at Independence Day Ceremony for New Citizens

Friday , July 04, 2008

Protesters made it hard to hear President Bush Friday as he welcomed new citizens and marked Independence Day at the home of Thomas Jefferson.

As is the tradition each Fourth of July, a naturalization ceremony was held at Monticello in Charlottesville, Va. This year, 76 immigrants from 30 different countries came to take the oath of citizenship.

But Bush repeatedly was interrupted as he welcomed the guests.

"That man is a fascist!" one protester yelled. Another swore at him.

The protesters later were removed from the ceremony by law enforcement officials.

"To my fellow citizens to be we believe in free speech in the United States of America," Bush said when the protesters started shouting.

To the din of more yelling, Bush discussed Jeffersons legacy as he introduced the citizens.

"We honor Jeffersons legacy by aiding the rise of liberty in lands that do not know the blessings of freedom, and on this Fourth of July we pay tribute to the brave men and women who wear the uniform of the United States of America," he said.

"We also honor Jefferson's legacy by welcoming newcomers to our land, and that is what were here to celebrate today."

More than 3,000 citizens have taken the oath at Monticello on Independence Day since 1963.

Eh it's Charlottesville, expect this. Having lived near there, worked there, and roamed the mean  laugh streets I feel qualified to tell you that place is Berkeley East. Plenty of fruit and nut. I just hope none of my immediate family were stars.

well, when i went to work this morning 53 around moniticello was starting to get busy. bunch of troopers and county cops floating around. when i got down to 20 there were a rather pathetic group of anti war protestors hanging around. (which i didn't get, cause bush wasn't arriving until later and the only folks coming up were just the beginings of the crowds) they were sad. crappy signs and just a couple of scraggles of people mopping around the side of the road.

got off work about 10:30, and got to 20 at almost eleven. it was blocked off by state troopers. so i'm trying to figure out weither its work the gas and time involved with taking the back way or should i just sit and wait a bit. there was some traffic coming down the other way and a guy rolls by in this big SUV, and is shouting out his window "impeach bush". i couldn't stop laughing. i mean come on, is this dude so stupid that he doesn't relize that by the time anyone got there rears in gear on that one, bush would already be out of office.  rolleyes

and i think its rude that people were heckling during the cermony. its not about bush, its about  folks becoming amercain citizens. if i hear anyone bragging about it, i will tell them off for ruining years of hard work by those taking the vows of citizenship by screwing up their ceromony.

A portion of the faculty at Furman University here in SC didn't care that they were ruining the graduation ceremony by protesting Bush's speech

One of the things that I do like about Bush is that unlike Obama is that he doesn't politicize his speeches for graduation ceremonies, etc. They should have been honored to be able to have a sitting president come and deliver the comencment address and should have shown the appropriate respect for the office even if they didn't respect the man, just like the military honors the president even if the individual soldiers may abhore him.

....words fail me.

Had I been tasked with coming up with the rudest, most disgusting, most outrageous thing to do, I don't thikn my mind would be able to come up with "interrupting a naturalization ceremony at Jefferson's house.

Words. Fail. Me.
