What do you think is the best choice? Directv or Dish Network.

I"ve no gripe with DirecTV.  Never done the Dish...

Neither. 372 channels and nothing worth watching. Books are better for one's brain.

We've had both.  We started off with Dish & they gave us all sorts of crap when we moved.  They didn't realize that they weren't a monopoly & acted shocked when after going round & round we told them to pound sand (this was 5 years ago fwiw).

Direct has been good about solving receiver problems when they crop up (a couple of times in the past year).  The setup options are nice & you are able to customize lots of settings.

However Stickjockey has the better outlook on it.

My friend, the Home Theatre Nut, loves DirectTV.  However, Stickjockey's right, 300+ stations and nothing to watch.  I have whatever I can pull in with an antenna and when I'm at my friend's house, all I find myself watching is History, Food Network, and Animal Planet.

I concur with Greg L on Dish's suckitude.  Have DirecTV now, and while their customer service is much better, I never get to watch anything, SWMBO always has HGTV on.  Oh well, keeps me from wasting too much time.

I still use cable myself.  I watch a lot more DVD's than television so I haven't bothered to "move up."  However, I know people with both DirecTV and Dish.  The Dish people seem to have more complaints FWIW.

Whatever became of good old C Band big dishes, where you could siphon off the raw feeds from the networks?

Of course, if I had a C band dish, I'd likely just convert it into a homebrew radiotelescope.

Only channels I care to watch are Sci-Fi, History and Comedy Network. Of course if a good movie is on the premium channels I'll watch.
NFL Sunday Ticket is available only on Direct TV, and Direct TV isn't available in Alaska. Other than that, choosing between the two shouldn't be anymore difficult than flipping a coin.
