That's Christmas.
New Year's is a big thing here. They eat soba, buckwheat noodles, before the new year sort of like how back in the US it's traditional to eat black-eyed peas. Every TV channel has some sort of New year's Eve special program. At midnight the buddhist temples do a thing, and also in the morning.

Bring me back some Doujinshi! Oyasumi Punpun Doujinshi would be great. (link NSFW. NOTE: panels are read Left to Right, top down) Chapter 6 (http://kissmanga.com/Manga/Oyasumi-Punpun/Vol-001-Ch-006-Read-Online?id=91063#2) in the Manga had me ROTFLMFAO last night!

Southern, rural tradition.

My wife insists. Supposed to bring luck.

Some do black eyed peas (me), others do hoppin john and greens, others do pork and sauerkraut. The black eyed peas and hoppin john and greens are more of a southern thing and the pork and kraut is very big in PA, especially around Amish country.

Along with things to eat some southerners also won't eat lobster or chicken New Years Day. The lobster moves backwards and you don't want to spend the new year going backwards and chicken has wings and can fly away, can't chance having your luck fly away during the new year.

I am sure there are tons more New Years Day food superstitions out there depending on what part of the country you are in.

Huh. The only food-related tradition I've heard of is champagne.

Black eyed peas for pennies, greens for dollars and cornbread for gold. ;)

Don't know that it has much to do with the New Year, but I'd love to have some good okonomiyaki.  Haven't had any in a long time.
