According to Salon.
As per one of the comments, Denzel Washington is likely puzzled. Book of Eli is one of my favorite movies. But probably too religious-oriented for Salon to mention.

The Blade gif's are funny too.
Salon's correction:
CORRECTION: A Feb. 7 story, “Here’s what the critics are saying about ‘Black Panther’ — it’s a ‘masterpiece,'” said that Black Panther was “the first blockbuster-format release featuring a black hero front and center.” The intention was to say that Chadwick Boseman was the first to star in a major adaptation adaptation of an iconic comics character in the current superhero-movie format.
To which I feel some one should probably mention Blade. You know the FIRST Marvel adaptation in the current superhero-movie format.

Django.
The Dark Tower.
Hell, Blazing Saddles!
-
And as I hit enter on that last post an add for Blade came on.
-
But probably too religious-oriented for Salon to mention.
Nah, short attention span of the reporter. Anything that happened more than 2 years ago is old news.
As for black hero movies, I can think of four starring Will Smith:
Seven Pounds - great movie
Independance Day
The Pursuit of Happiness
I am Legend
Hell, pretty much all of Will Smith's movies are positive role model movies.

FTFY

Night of the Living Dead! 19 freakin' 68!
-
Will Smith in Independence Day and Men In Black.

Will Smith in Independence Day and Men In Black.
And that other one where he was that Dr with the dog and zombies.

Shaft.

Spawn

How about the remake (or is it now "reimagining"?) of The Magnificant Seven?

Blazing Saddles???

I Am Legend, a remake of the 1971 movie The Omega Man. I preferred the Omega Man with Charlton Heston.

For all the ones you mentioned, this tweet is the one that sent me rolling on the floor:
Will Smith: “What about ID4?”
Salon Content Monkey: “Never saw it.”
WS: “Hancock?”
SCM: “Nope.”
WS: “Any of the Men in Black movies?”
SCM: “What are you talking about old man?”
WS: “I AM LEGEND? PLEASE TELL ME YOU HAVE SEEN I AM LEGEND.”
SCM: “I’m calling security. (http://twitter.com/SonnyBunch/status/961284725661949952)"
(Note, this is funnier because I hear it in Will Smith's voice. Especially the shouting part.)

In Slate's defense, does anyone actually remember Hancock? A movie I wanted to like, but they really messed it up.
The mind boggles - who were these people being paid to write about movies, and don't know about Snipes, Washington, Smith, and the rest? We need to retire that saying about weatherman being the job where you can be wrong all the time. Must be the "bad publicity is still publicity" motive again.
(ID4 - Independence Day 4? I'm not paid to write about movies.)

Don't forget Last Man on Earth with Vincent Price: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuPgXDWMB-Q
All three movies are screen adaptations of Richard Matheson's novel I Am Legend.

I can't wait for the non-cis version: I am Le Gendered.

I can't wait for the non-cis version: I am Le Gendered.
Followed by the sequel: I am Triggered.
-
And to cap of the
tril triggergy would be: "AHHHHHHHHHHHAHHAHAHAHHHHHHHHHHAHHAHAHHHHH!!!!" which is not only the title but the only words of dialogue and what the audience will be shouting once they realize what they just paid 10-12 bucks to see.
-
Fistful I watched Hancock 3 days ago.
-
Shaft.
Can't forget Undercover Brother.
-
What's wrong with Hancock? I love that one. ???
-
Ever see the uncut/unrated version?
-
I haz been Triggered due to the sexism.
What about Black action heroes like Pam Grier, Tamara Dobson, or Teresa Graves? ;)

I liked the way it started out, but the last half felt to me liked they tacked on a completely different movie, and not a very good one.
