Military Recruiters = Pornographers in Berkeley

In keeping with my theme for the day -- so does this mean a city could ban Dem or Rep HQ offices? Peace Corps offices? How about banning private organizations like Greenpeace, Sea Shepherds, etc.?

Only in Berkeley. Sigh:

    In response to a Marine Corps recruiting office established in Berkeley last year, local activists are trying to make it more difficult for future recruiting centers to open in the city.

    If passed by a majority of Berkeley voters, a proposed initiative would require military recruiting offices and private military companies in Berkeley to first acquire a special use permit.

    To obtain this permit, a business must hold public hearings and a public comment period.

    If the initiative passes, recruitment offices could not be opened within 600 feet of residential districts, public parks, public health clinics, public libraries, schools or churches.

    Currently, a recruiting office is held to the same standards as most other businesses, which do not require a public hearing or have limits on where offices can be established.

    The author of the initiative, Berkeley-based lawyer Sharon Adams, modeled the initiative after current zoning law that restricts the location of adult-oriented businesses.

    In the same way that many communities limit the location of pornographic stores, thats the same way we feel about the military recruiting stations, said Phoebe Sorgen, an initiative proponent and a member of the citys Peace and Justice Commission.

In the event of a major disaster such as an earthquake, Berkeley gets NO National Guard assistance. After all, they're "icky soldiers". They'd certainly not want them there.

They recruit EVERYWHERE.  We have a gaggle of them here in Madison, which is basically Berkeley East. I have coffee with several, one of whom was in my unit prior to my retirement.

Bummer for the recruiters that get assigned to such locations, but it's an equal-opportunity gig, liberal or conservative demographics notwithstanding.

So you would cut off their aid from the government?  Would you also have the gall to collect their taxes?  I am for small government.  And I think this is an excellent idea.  If people want to join the military, then they will find out how. 

I think it says a lot about our country when people do not want to serve it.  My GUESS is that people are tired of war.

Uhhhh, because they're renting private business space from a non-government entity.  It's not eminent domain, or the recruiting office putting a gun to someone's head saying "Give us office space, oh and your children."  It's a free market transaction.   It's a small government singling one type of business  'cause we don't like their kind and discriminating.  I bet if another gov't agency wanted to setup a Free Abortion, Welfare for Illegal Aliens Sanctuary, Berkley wouldn't require them to get a special permit.  

And last I checked it's still a all-volunteer military.   No one is being forced to go into a recruiting office and hear the "pitch" from the recruiters.  

My GUESS is that people are tired of war.

Oh yes, It's soooooo difficult here on the home front, what with all the rationing of food and other commodities/war materials and all men-folk being overseas.  Plus the low wages and long hours in all the armaments factories that we're all forced to work at.  

My GUESS is that it's better then being tired of all the suicide bombers and terrorist attacks here in the US.

You're for small government, yet you support Berkeley government passing ordinances requiring special permits for certain businesses, but not others, to operate in their city? Yes, the US Government recruits from everywhere.

Assuming that stuff from when I entered has remained true, you're not getting recruited(as in signing the enlistment paperwork) before 17, and you aren't entering combat until 18.

At the very least, they really, really want you to have that HS diploma - and unless you skipped a grade, that's going to put you very close to 18.

  Yes because we have had how many suicide attacks here since 9/11?  I think people are tired of a government that is an accessory to the torture of others and murder of others. 

How many Iraqi terrorists were on the hijacked planes?  How many Saudis?  Was Al Quaeda in Iraq before we got there?  When does the hunt for Bin Laden start to take precedence versus the war of terror being raged in Iraq?

  I seem to remember about 2/3 of the country do not support the war.  I guess that is not mainstream though.
