For an optical mouse?

No pad at all. Any hard surface will do.

A soft surface? Not so much...

I was unaware that anyone still used mouse pads.

Unless you have a glass tabletop, or even a high gloss one.

You want a matte color with no variance.  Fake wood grain can cause mouse jumpiness as the sensor goes from light grain to dark grain.  No big deal in spreadsheets and word docs, sucky in artistic use, gaming or hot-n-heavy network administration that results in a misplaced right click.

Something without gaps, too. Significant-depth, thin gaps can cause mice to freak out now and then. Have used the arm of an armchair as a mousepad. Works alright.

It's real wood, but has a lot of that light/dark going on.  My main problem is dust and the occasional fiber that gets stuck right under the lens.  I have to clean things off about every other day.  The one I am using has the plastic surface.  I am thinking I will get one of the soft type.

Nick, there must be a lot of folks using mouse pads.  My local Best Buy had about ten different pads, for about 6 or 8 bucks a piece.  Or you can order one from the Ubuntu web site.

You gotta use something with a lot of tactile differences on it so that the optical mouse can easily read changes when it moves.  So a glossy desk surface would be bad.
I use a piece of cardboard.

Get rid of the mouse. Use a trackball, and you don't need a pad. Works much better for relief of carpal tunnel syndrome.

A trackball, huh?  I was waiting for someone to suggest I just get rid of Windows and use Ubuntu.  But that suggestion is close enough.

I love my Ripper XL.  Nice soft cloth top that picks up the laser perfectly.  The ONLY downside is that you don't want to spill things on it, as it is a little bit absorbent.  Dirt likes it too, but a wet towel will clean it right up.  Oh, and it's HUGE (as in 14"x17.75").

Logitech Marble FX.  I've one running on my media machine, a wireless version on the gaming box and one in deep archive.  The wired are worth their weight in silver, the wireless in gold.  This is how a Trackball should work and be configured.  If you find one working for the cheap, snatch it up like Smegal and the One Ring.

I'm using a ~15 year old grey cloth RadioShack mousepad at home, works great.

Here at work, pickings are slim so I'm using two plastic pads that were gimmes. The teflon sliders on the mice constantly gum up with junk... it's either coming from the plastic or from me, which is disturbing in it's own right.

Anyhow, I think the cloth pads end up performing a cleaning role as well. And of course, they should be cleaned themselves occasionally...

Yeah, I'm thinkin' the dust and hairs and fibers are more of a problem on a flat, non-porous surface.

Yeah, but they're cheaper at Target.  I wouldn't pay seven bucks at Best Buy, so I got one for four dollars at Target.  Does that make me a cheapskate?
