I've had deep fried beets.

They are one of the few vegetables that really doesn't take the trip in hot fat very well at all.

MMM sweet tator fries, I like them with greek seasoning, such as Cavendars over Old Bay. Its a personal preference because I'm not big fan of the flavor of bay leaves. Light amount seasoning salt is fine also.

Hey, baked artichokes with butter are yummy.

I need some clarification here - are we talking about what I call beetroot? A purple-ish spherical root that I find to be delicious?

To further complicate trans-Atlantic food terminology differences - if we are speaking of beetroot I disagree with the notion that it doesn't deep fry well. When cut in such a way tor resemble what I refer to as a crisp (and you lot as a potato chip, which for me is a long square section of potato) and then deep fried, the beetroot turns out rather well.

I also think sprouts are great.

This is what most Americans think of when someone says "beets."

I THINK that's essentially what the Brits call beetroot.

And, you have an opinion, so you also get a cookie, even though you're very, very wrong about 'beet crisps.' cheesy

I was mountain climbing in Ecuador in the early 1990's and stopped into a small town restaraunt for lunch. The cuy was recommended and it was explained to me that it was the national dish of the country. I saw what it was (a small animal that had been skinned, split long ways so it would lie flat on the grill and cooked over wood or charcoal. Normally it is cooked with the head and feet still attached. I ordered cuy, but asked to have the head and feet removed on mine. They thought this was strange, but cooked it as ordered. It was not too bad. I later learned that cuy is guinea pig like the children's pet here. Ok, ok, no "mountainclmbr ate Squeaker jokes!". Anyway, it occurred to me that the traditional "parts left attached" way to cook cuy would be better if the cuy had a beet in it's mouth.

Edited to add a cuy link with photos. Don't you think a beet in it's mouth would be a more elegant presentation?

Mike - that's beetroot. Boots the chemist do vegetable 'crisps' - sweet potato, carrot, parsnip and beetroot - I could send you some.

One British chef I know of insists that the only thing to do with pre-cooked vacuum packed beetroot (sold in large quantities in the UK) is to make beetroot pasta. That's pasta made with beetroot not served with it. I've been meaning to make purple pasta for ages.

Oh, I agree, there are much worse things than artichokes. They're just the first thing that came to mind.

I like beets fixed just about every way imaginable. I also whack the tops as they're growing for beet greens. I don't care for them too much, but the gf likes them.

I love beets because I'm a dishwasher, and because beets _look_ scary, but they're just a peach to clean off of six pans and stuff. Hit it with the sprayer, throw it on the rack, next. dish. please.

Beets are alright. Brussel sprouts are not. When I was a kid, I'd eat any food I was served. One day I ate a brussel sprout, it barely went down and came right back out (followed by the rest of my lunch). sad

I've eaten them since, but I still think they are nasty.
