In another article, the Officer conducting the Article 32 Hearing at Camp Pendleton is identified as LtCol Paul Ware.
I know him personally from my Marine Corps service. (When he was a Captain/Major selectee at the time of my retirement.) He is a military lawyer.
He is an exceptionally honest, dedicated, erstwhile, and intelligent man. There isn't a chance that he could be influenced by political factors.
BTW, the article erroneously refers to the outcome of the Article 32 Hearing as a "ruling", when the results are actually a "Report". The Article 32 Report will detail "Findings of Fact" and "Recommendations". The Report will provide the Convening Authority (The General in the Chain of Command with court martial authority) with the information needed to decide either to drop the charges, proceed with a court martial, issue a letter or reprimand or comdemnation, or refer the matter to subordinate commanders for Nonjudicial Punishment.
We'll see what the CA does with the report. Politics could play a role in the General's decision, but he's unlikely to beat a dead horse if the Art 32 report indicates that the case is DOA.
