Actually, mashing one button on the mouse and typing in the app's name would be about fastest and would suit MY needs well, as long as there was some facility to browse through apps if need be.

Why don't you people who hate the new WM just install another one?

Last time I tried to get GTK2 running on a Unibuntu install, there were version conflicts, and the old libs that needed to go away wanted to take critical OS bits with them.

I think you're being overly critical of Unity because it doesn't fit your workflow, though, and I'm pointing out that it can work for a lot of other people.

So can a dollar-store calculator.  Doesn't mean it's not crap.

I have this on my netbook. First launch takes a few seconds, but after that it's a lot faster than the menu system in unity's dash.
