Storing oxygenated gasoline?
« on: March 31, 2012, 06:19:32 PM »
How long can you store E10 gasoline in a full plastic CARB gas can?  (you know, those awful unvented cans that are all you can buy anymore)  I don't use Sta-bil, but every month I dump one of the cans in the tank of my truck and refill it.  So the gas gets stored about 2 months, and when I pour it it's still clear and smells right.  So I think it really lasts much longer than that so long as it's stored in an airtight container.

What y'all think?

I dunno.  If you won't use Sta-Bil, how about acetone?

I use a five gallon plastic gas can of Chevron Supreme with five ounces of SeaFoam added.  I use this to top off the motorcycles.  I have stored it this way for up to three months with no apparent ill effects on the gasoline.

You'll be fine on two months. Sta-bil really does work. The smaller the volume, the quicker the gas goes bad. I fired off my old truck with 6 year old gas no problem, but not the best. The only idea I have other than rotating stored gas every 6 months is to get it under pressure. I'd like to get a big bulk LPG tank and convert it to gas storage, putting about 15 psi of inert gas on it would probably greatly extend the life as well as make a handy pump.

Make sure to use the right formula of Sta Bil.  Ethanol has its own formula.

I always add Seafoam to my small engine tanks before they are put away for the season and have never run into problems.

Make sure to use the right formula of Sta Bil.  Ethanol has its own formula.

The Sta-bil labeled for Ethanol is to prevent the problems associated with Ethanol; corrosion, phase seperation, etc.

The Marine Sta-bil was designed to prevent ethanol problems and for long term storage.
