Wanted ...
« on: December 04, 2014, 07:10:57 PM »
... I was SO hyped up about the F-35. Now ... I think I'll just keep saving my lunch money for awhile.

How soon will they be available as surplus?  I'm thinking maybe a tow vehicle for water skiing - or an anchor for the Jon boat.

stay safe.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.

Hey you kids!! Get off my lawn!!!

It just a misinformation campaign, they don't want the Chinese to come with their very own version anytime soon.   ;)   =|   =D

Navy could get by with more Super Hornets until a better design came along.  Still in production for the RAAF, IIRC.  Heck, so could the USAF and USMC.  Only thing left in the cold would be a replacement for the Harriers.

OK, looking at the specs, the F-35A, USAF variant is almost as capable as the Super Hornet.  The F-35B&C would be even less capable.  Oh, and the Super Hornet costs half as much as the F-35.

1. Axe the F-35
2. Buy Super Hornets to replace thrashed AF/Navy/USMC systems until a better stealthy alternative is found.  (Maybe a F-22 beefed up for carrier duty.)
3. A-10-ish STOL that could use something like a ski-jump on the amphibious assault ships for USMC CAS.

We learned nothing from MacNamara and the F-111 and F-4.

From the article:

Quote
That’s because the F-35 is complex — the result of the Air Force, Marines and Navy all adding features to the basic design. In airplane design, such complexity equals weight. The F-35 is extraordinarily heavy for a single-engine plane, weighing as much as 35 tons with a full load of fuel.

One size fits all often doesn't.

Reminds me of the ME-262, when Hitler insisted it be a bomber.  Did well in WWII anyhow, despite his meddling.  It is widely agreed that if it were not for the delays introduced by him, the ME-262 would have been introduced much earlier and been a really significant factor in the World War II air war in Europe.  Those who do not learn history...

Yeah, I got that too, and had to click out of the whole article and reload it to read it.

Sure we did, we learned that with enough power you can even get a brick to fly.
