Italian Better Business Bureau?

Does anyone know if there's an Italian equivalent to our Better Business Bureau?

You're serious?  It's like the start of a joke.

I'm serious.

I need to hire some people in Rome, and I wanna be sure they're legit before I send in the first payment.  The only contact I've had with them has been via their website and email correspondence.  Anyone can put up a website and answer emails, so that's no real guarantee.

I'd call over to the town hall or whatever in the town where they are located and see if there's a chamber of commerce kind of thing or whether they themselves are familiar with the company. I'm assuming you googled them and tried to find other references to them by third parties? Would paypal help somehow? Or paying by credit card? So you have some kind of insurance if the deal backfires.
