Why is it a burn when it occurs from the rapid removal of all heat from the skin?
22 or 134?

It's a medical/pathological definition.
Burn in that sense describes damage/destruction to tissue.
Chemical burn, electrical burn, etc.
-
I was told it was because the transfer of heat is so rapid it burns you from inside out so to speak. The heat leaving you body is what is burning you. Try working on a heat pump in dead winter with pre partially frozen hands and see what kind of a burn you will get.
That is all...

I think the worst part with freon is the rapid removal of moisture. If my hand wasn't so dry it wouldn't be so sensitive.
Still not as bad as the time I poured boiling water on my hand though. That was fun.
Oh right,
FISTFUL IS DUMB.

ZOMG!!11! DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY PENGUINS YOU KILLED BY RELEASING ALL THAT FREON!!!!111!!

Try trying to locate a soldering iron by feeling around for it.
Also: Hot glue.

In brazing class I soldered up two short pieces of copper pipe, threw it into a pile to my right, and looked in another pile for two more pieces to work on. Didn't find any in that pile, so I tried the one to my right. After that, I started dunking them in water when I finished.

Try trying to locate a soldering iron by feeling around for it.
Better yet, try knocking the soldering iron off the bench and reflexively catching it with your bare hand, by the "hot part".

The heat leaving you body is what is burning you.
The water freezing in the cells forms very shape pointy crystals that tear the cell walls, killing the cells. It's the same reason frozen veggies are limp and watery when you thaw them out.
-
So the pain is from sharp ice crystals destroying your flesh from the inside out? Cooool...
-
Actually, with the instant freezing of a freon burn, the cellular damage from ice crystals isn't nearly as bad.
If the freezing process is slow, such as with frost bite, the ice crystals get nasty long and jaggy and really do a number on cells.
The faster the freezing process, though, the smaller the ice crystals, fewer jagged pointy ice needles, and lots less cellular damage.
That's why flash frozen products, frozen at temperatures as low as -50 deg. F, have much better textures than products that are frozen in your home in your refrigerator's freezer.

Try flicking a couple ounce glob of molten aluminum dross out of the way with your welding rod and it landing in your lap. Smokin holes in your leg, that is all.

The dynamics of arms races being what they are, we quickly progressed to upside-down.

I remember a yardbird welder in Long Beach shipyards who was "scarfing" something or another above his head with his torch and I watched as a BIG glob of molten steel went right down the back of his collar. He had his leathers and clothes ripped off in like 5 seconds, I kid you not. Never seen anybody get naked that fast before or since.
Still he got a pretty nasty second degree burn out of it.
