I agree, with the caveat that I'm pretty sure there were higher powers pressuring them to take that position. (Governor of the state in addition to already mentioned culpables.) That does not remove the local leaderships culpability, but it does mitigate it.

I just heard some self-professed expert on CNN talking about the fact that the cops supposedly think the shooter used a pistol because of cartridge cases found at the scene, and how he must be an expert shot to hit the cops at 125 yards. Apparently this guy has never heard of pistol caliber carbines.

Pistol/pistol carbine/5.56 pistol.... reminds me of the Brady bill of the 90s- noone could manufacture standard capacity magazines so people stopped carrying neutered magazined wondernines and started using more effective low cap handguns in .357 and .45.

The remington 740 or SMLE gathering dust in the closet would be substantially more lethal in such circumstance than anything that shoots green tip ammo or a pistol carbine, though I'm pretty sure that neither of these rifles are common among the demographic who shot these cops.

If I start (falsely) telling a guy how I saw his wife making out with some other guy in a car and tearing his clothes off as they went into his house for some "fun" and he goes home and kills his wife, do I bear any guilt for that?

Legally, maybe not. Morally, most definitely.

Legally and morally multiple people can be 100% guilty, and thus you can hypothetically have multiple people getting the death penalty or life imprisonment for a single murder. Likewise with conspiracy and aiding and abetting multiple people can be culpable for a single person crime. Just because someone is 100% guilty, doesn't mean there can't be yet more guilt.

It might be very hard to determine depending on how the rounds expanded, tumbled and fragmented on impact.  They know nothing more then approx bullet weight based on what is recovered. 

Oh, and as an FYI:  .38 Special/.357 Mag bullets are .357.  9mm is .356 (or is it .355 I disremember), so is the forensics guy really going to be able tell what it is after being shot from a gun and then entering a body?  I highly doubt it.   (Unless you shooting a big ,slow, heavy, military bullet like from a 6.5 mm Carcano....)

Jeffrey Williams.  20 years old.  They're not saying that he was aiming at the cops.  They're hinting that his target MAY have been someone else.  Might be  something else going on, or they just might be being careful about what they claim.

IANAL.  Howevers, if "hands up, don't shoot" got such a following, I would imagine "he wasn't TRYING to shoot them" could get a foothold during the pre-legal, or extra-legal phases.

Saw it on the news earlier. The angle presented was that he was firing in self defense, and accidentally hit the cops instead.

I think whatever Boomhauer was hacking up is contagious, because I feel it as well.
