Cannons
« on: March 06, 2007, 06:27:29 AM »
Anyone here have a replica cannon? I've been thinking about getting one and I originally wanted a full scale Mountain Howitzer until I realized how expensive with will be to shoot. I figured about $12 a round with a projectile. Not to mention a PIA to haul around.

So I am now considering a 1/2 scale Mountain Howitzer with a 1.75" bore (golf ball sized).

I'll probably get my cannon from www.missouricannonworks.com because its close enough to home for a weekend fishing trip.

That would be a blast! (pun intended)
Just make sure you read the instructions first.

I know a guy who made a small cannon (hand held) and used a piece of dowel a a ram rod.
He had fired it once and didn't give it time to cool before he packed another shot.
It went off in his face. He was lucky it only did cosmetic damage.
He has permanent little dots all over his face now.

We call him Spot.

I was flipping channels the other night and caught an episode of Viva la Bam where they had some kind of civil war re-enactment in front of Uncle Phil's place.  They loaded this old cannon and fired a shot that went straight through the treehouse casino about 100 yards away.  It blew big holes in the walls and also smashed some trees.  shocked It was extremely cool - made me want a cannon.

A full-size civil war field cannon would be quite nice. What are the regulations for such?

No regulations that I can see either, some cannon manufactures have a ATF form that they want you to fill out. I think they call it a ATF cannon purchase agreement. Cannons are not illegal, the report might get you in trouble with local LEO.

Remember some of those full-scale the powder charge can measured in pounds and that can get expensive real quick when shooting it.

Is there regulation against making your own blackpowder? This must be under explosives. Charcoal (legal), potassium nitrate (fertilizer), sulphur (?).

Other than its really unstable to make, check here for sure http://www.cpsc.gov/

I know that they are the reason why m-80's are illegal and recently CPSC had won a case (I think December) against a company that sold fireworks components because people were buying the ingredients to make flash powder.

I prefer to keep my fingers and eyes, so I'll be buying my propellent.

I've considered ordering one of the 3/4 scale 3" field rifles...

http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_106&products_id=1681

Or even one of the 2.25" bore Coehorn mortar replicas:

I spend too much money at that place, already.   grin

Where is the boom?

G-98

Well if you buy one we can meet halfway for a cannon shoot. I have a place we can go in the winter months that is about 2 hours west of madison. The property owner owns a small cannon also.

Umm, nevermind that.  How many pounds of powder would that take to fire, and I could only guess at the cost of each projectile.

The way I understand it, muzzle-loading cannons and field rifles are fine, but as soon as you get to the big breechloaders, it's a no-no.

The Parrot Rifle has been done, I've got pics of a guy with a replica, he casts his projectiles, then swages them to size.  Here's the 3" rifle and the website, note the accuracy at 400 yards!
