.270 loads?
« on: April 10, 2016, 12:26:01 AM »
So, now that I've got a couple .270's I need to figure out what ammo to shoot with them.  Primary target will be Washington mule deer.  Range can get up 350 yards.  Rifles are a pre-64 M70 Featherweight and a JC Higgins 51-L.

Apparently the JC Higgens is bedded either fully or at least for several inches in front of the receiver.  According to my source the gun is NOT picky on ammo as a result.

I've handloaded for my 6.5x55 and 9.3x62 for years so I'm fine with doing that for the .270's, but if there's some factory loads that are really tough to beat I'm all ears.

So, favorite handload recipes or factory loads?

Every gun is picky, some are less picky than others.

Do like the rest of us do, get your rifle on paper and zeroed to the best the ammo you have on hand can be, since you saying 350 yards, I would zero at 200 yards. I usually tend to go on the higher speed side with my initial hand load, seems I have less work after that on perfecting my load.

Then start playing for hand load recipes until you get the tightest group possible and stick with that load for that rifle.

The "traditional" load for a .270 is a quality 130 grain bullet and a maximum charge of H4831 powder. (Note that IMR4831 and H4831 do NOT interchange!!!)
