Title: Magnum PI is on Amazon Prime
Post by: Ben on July 12, 2019, 08:30:01 PM
I recall a few people here a while back were looking for streaming options for Magnum PI (the original). I see that it just hit Amazon Prime, FYI.

Higgins!!!!!!!!

You can tell he is a true Texan: He has a cannon and a rifle on his front lawn.  If he just trades the British flag for a Gonzales flag, the image would be complete.   =D [ar15]

I've never watched it before, but I'm about halfway through the first season (on Tubi). Does it get any better in the second season? A lot of programs hit their stride in season 2 or 3.

Huge fan here.  The first season is uneven.  The next three seasons are amazing.

Season 3, episodes 1 and 2 -- Did you See the Sunrise -- are, to me, two of the best episodes ever put on TV out of any dramatic series.

Season 1, as noted, is kind of spotty.

Season 2 gets running with some really good episodes, but season 3 is by far the best.

There are a couple of episodes that are Higgins-centric that are also VERY good.

I remember the collective jaw drops at the conclusion of that episode.

Watched the first 3 episodes of season 1 last night. I never saw the first two as I didn't start watching it until later in the first season. Not great, but I fondly remember when I was 15 really loving it.

And you know what? I still like it.

That was a great episode.  I recall the freeze-frame quite well.

Turns out my wife took an acting class from "Maggie Poole," at Illinois State.

We just got Prime this month.  Noticed Magnum and we've watched the first couple episodes in season 1.  We used to watch it all the time when it was on TV back in the day.

I remember being shocked and confused as hell at that ending.  Wait.  What? Magnum doing that?

And there was no more after the commercials.  Wait.  What?  Holy cow.

That two parter is on many critics lists of the greatest TV episodes.

It's when the show took a different direction and got a bit darker. And a lot better. Not quite as campy.

Why did Archer change the line to "Regis"?  To make sure it stayed a parody and not plagarism?  Or was it just being goofball?

Well, not right away. Right after that, there's a fairly campy episode about an idol that starts fires, and makes cars stop running. Then the episode where Magnum wakes up in the 1930s. Makes me think they were really fighting for survival in that season.

In episode 46, Magnum and Higgins are "quarantined" in the guest house.

That one was a good one, too. Harkens back to Higgins being involved in crimes against humanity as a soldier in Kenya.

Because the old lady he was friends with at the cancer treatment facility watched Regis every morning

I've never watched Archer, but I still thought the Regis reference was funny.

That a was a good episode, and I read somewhere it got really good ratings at the time. I didn't think the Ian McShane-as-Mau-Mau-zealot thing worked quite as well as the similar concept in the Firefly episode Bushwhacked. On the other hand, Firefly didn't have Ian McShane, so I guess they're even.

Slight drift, as Magnum PI is one of my all time favorites from the beginning and own the DVDs.  In IMDB.TV through my FireTV, I am watching The Rockford Files for the FIRST time and really enjoying it.  I don't know how I missed it during the original run.

I tried watching Magnum PI on Amazon Prime over the weekend and they've taken it OFF Prime and made it available for additional fees.

Plus they're moving more and more OUT of Prime video availability and moving into clustered interest segments, such as Military History, British Comedy, etc. -- for even more additional fees.

WTF is the point of subscribing to Amazon prime if you have to pile fee on *expletive deleted*ing fee on *expletive deleted*ing fee?

Yes, I've noticed this too. A bunch of shows that were Prime are now on all these rinky dink little services within Prime that want you to subscribe. This is exactly what I was afraid of when everybody started their own services.

The other thing I've seen happen is that shows that were on Prime have now moved to services like IMDB (I think owned by Amazon) which are free, but full of commercials that you can't skip. Again, these are all listed in the Prime lineup. Babylon 5 for instance, was Prime. I wanted to watch an episode a month or so ago, and it wasn't until I started the episode that I saw it now went to some other service and started off with a commercial.

If you haven't watched, The Three Muskateers is a terrific series on Prime.  Been binge watching and it's great.  3 episodes left in season 3.  I hope they do another season.
