I've read a couple of local articles suggesting there will be a turkey shortage for the holidays in these parts. Have any of you seen that in your neck of the woods?
Thanksgiving and Christmas turkeys are a big deal for me, mostly from a family nostalgia perspective. So it will be a priority for me to get a couple of turkeys this year, with cost secondary. I usually don't buy fancy or even fresh turkeys. I'll get whatever Costco has and call it good. But they may not have any this year.
A local farm sells pasture raised turkeys and seems to have plenty available so far for pre-order on their website. You have to create an account to see price, so I'm guessing they'll be really expensive.
I figure my game plan will be to check Costco and the better grocery stores in the area starting the first week of November. If I see any decent frozen turkeys I'll grab two and be done with it. If that fails I guess I'll buy a couple of likely very expensive turkeys from that farm.
I can't imagine not having turkey on Tday and Christmas. I've never not had any in my entire life.

Even if there wasn't going to be one before, there will probably be one now. These things tend to be kind of self-fulfilling.
-
I don't know how accurate the reporting from websites like this one are. Nevertheless, here they suggest that as far as turkeys go, the potential shortages would be for smaller, fresh birds.
I usually get smaller turkeys, but if all I see is frozen 20 pounders, that's okay. If I have to cook a 20 pounder, I'll freeze half of it for turkey dinners later in the year. =)

My family used to have turkey for both T-giving and Christmas.
A few years before Mom died I decided to break out of the mold for T-giving and did a roasted pork loin. It was nice, but it did seem to be a bit strange.
-
Ben - if you need a turkey let me know. I have some extras not yet spoken for. I usually ask $7/lb (these are heritage turkeys raised free range). Might be able to cut you a small break but I don’t make much over costs at that price. I also have some broad-breasted turkeys in the freezer (20+ lbs). Those would be closer to $3/lb.
-
For that matter, anyone on here that wants to reserve a turkey for future years please let me know. I don’t have much not yet spoken for this year, but next year it’ll just be a matter of not selling too many poults that hatch out to accommodate folks.
-
I raise meat chickens too. So if you want to make the trip worthwhile I can sell you a bunch of chickens too. Come out to help on slaughter day and you can have up to 12 chickens at my cost (~$2.50/lb). After 12 it would be $3.50/lb. If you don’t help out I usually ask $5.50/lb.

The Aldi two blocks from my house had a whole freezer full. I hate turkey.
I blew about $100 on groceries for the next few weeks or so.

If I want a turducken I'm not gonna buy one. I'm gonna wait until I see a duck flying over the house followed by a turkey. Then I'm gonna shoot the duck with 00 buck, which will send the duck flying into the mouth and down the gullet of the turkey. The turkey that swallowed the duck will drop at my feet and I will pick it up and toss it in the oven, just like in the cartoons.
-
Thankfully, I am not a big fan of turkey and my elderly mother won't touch it. She does like pork loin, esp. the way I cook it and she loves dressing. I do the cooking now and she does the eating. ;)
The rest of the family live at least 200 miles away so the chances of us getting together is slim.
-
Depending on the virus status in the area, we will either have 25-30 people for Thanksgiving or five. We will see.
-
With all the cows running around here I'm thinking standing rib roast sounds good.
-
If I can acquire one I may smoke a turkey this year. Haven't done that in several years now.
So far I haven't heard of any unusual shortages on meat and other groceries locally.
-
For several years I bought heritage free range turkey from a young menonite guy near me. They were awesome but he must have stopped because I didn’t get my usual spring preorder commitment email from him last year or this.
I have done ok with organic turkey from Aldi without the injected brine and usual contaminants.
We have invited my wife’s parents and siblings but it might be just the 2 of us or as many as 16. Doesn’t matter to me. I love left over turkey.
AFTER thanksgiving I often pick up a whole breast or young turkey for cheap. I like to keep a couple in the freezer and smoke them slow in the pit barrel.
-
My patience is thin. I am going to have long pig.
-
I would assume that most of the turkey day birds are already ded. I do notice here in turkey central that it seems that new birds are not getting put in barns at full capacity. Probably related to the fact that every processing plant here advertises non stop for workers. My heritage turkeys won't be big enough to eat, also I ended up with one tom and six hens so probably make them all producers of new turkeys. Did end up with two broad breasts that were a bonus payment on a sheep shearing. One hen is definitely dinner. The other is probably here to stay as a pet. One blue eye, very docile, can't turn around without tripping over it because it thinks it is a dog.
-
I have one in the freezer that I bought last year at Thanksgiving time for Christmas and then didn't use. I will cook it for Turkey Day, and try to find one to replace it; shouldn't be too hard because Minnesota raises a *lot* of turkeys.
I make a killer turkey gumbo, and Wife would actually rather have that than a roast bird. I might partially thaw it, cut it up like a fryer, and roast the breast and make gumbo with the dark meat instead of roasting the whole thing and making gumbo with the carcass and some of the leftover dark meat.

You hate the Freedom Holiday Bird of Plenty?
*expletive deleted*ing Commie!
-
I've had a 20 pounder in my deep freeze for about 4 years now.
I got it after the holidays, meaning to cook it, never did.
So, I'm thinking that I'm going to roast it... but then turn it into stock.
-
I had no idea so many here were so serious about turkey.
Mrs Mush doesn't eat turkey, and we'll be camping for T-Day, so I'm not getting one, but in general I'm ambivalent about turkey meat.

HOLY HELL! COMMIES EVERYWHERE! MCCARTHY WAS RIGHT!
No kidding. This has been a good thread to discover the commie pinkos among us. What's the anti-turkey equivalent of a scarlet letter? We need to mark these hippies in some way.
-
"What's the anti-turkey equivalent of a scarlet letter?"
The White Turkey Feather.
It works on multiple levels...

Also, since no one mentioned it:
If you don't deep-fry your Turkey, are you really even an American?

Well, you're an American that still has his eyebrows.
-

Deep frying a turkey is relatively a new process in Yankee land. Actually being able to purchase a whole turkey year round is probably only been available since the 90s. I remember my mom buying at least half a dozen turkeys when they went on sale after Christmas and she'd roast one monthly until they were gone.
-
Finally, unlike you unhelpful guys, someone has explained the true reason for turkey shortages. CLIMATE CHANGE. How could you chumps have missed that? It's so obvious!

That guy's a *expletive deleted*ing idiot.
Climate Change isn't responsible for turkey shortages, it's responsible for the rise of the deadly super turkey. The government is keeping this from people, telling them it's a shortage, because they're lying to us... LYING!

Shopping at the Albertsons today, I saw they had around a dozen various turkeys on display, from cheap to "free range" and various sizes. Costco did not have turkeys yet as of yesterday. If Costco doesn't have any in by the end of the month, I'm gonna buy at least one at the Albertsons to make sure I have at least one on hand. Maybe I'll buy a smaller one there, and then if small ones run out before Tday, I'll just buy a big one for the second turkey.
-
Aldi had plenty of cheap turkeys for $1.39 a pound yesterday. First I've seen any this fall. Since I have one in the freezer already, that's not cheap enough. Hopefully they drop to $1 or a little less in a couple of week.
-
Just put a bird in the smoker, I bought this one at Christmas time last year. 14.5# bird for $20.50. Be curious what they go for this year.
-
No problem here at our household. We like meatloaf.
Woody
-
My store had plenty of turkeys yesterday. Just over a buck a pound.
-
Local grocery store website said $1.59# for whole hen turkey.

Mmmmm... Meatloaf. [insert drool smiley here]

So anyways, I was at the fancy Albertsons in Boise this week getting beef boogaloo ingredients, and decided to get turkeys there. They had a decent size freezer section with a good 80 birds, with a mix of Butterballs and other standard brands and the fancy schmantzy organic birds. I did have to search for smaller birds, but got a couple just under 13lbs each. They were $1.70/lb, but unbeknownst to me, when I donated ten bucks to the local food bank via the card reader at checkout, it dropped the price to $0.98/lb.
So my plan is that now I have two frozen birds for sure for Tday and Xmas. On the Monday of Tday week, I will brave the crowds at Costco and see if they have any smaller sized fresh birds. If so, I will get one to make on Tday, then make one of the frozen ones on Xmas, and save the other one for "Thanksgiving in June" so I don't have to go a year without turkey and stuffing.
-
Aldi dropped their price to 87¢ per pound (frozen large Butterballs) and sold out immediately. Don't know if they will get enough more in at that price to keep up with the demand.
-
Just got back from the grocery store.
They had a bunch of turkeys in the cases -- store brands, Butter Balls, organics.
Last week they were even running a special -- 10 to 20 pound store brand birds for 39 cents a pound. Should have gotten one.
-
I picked up a 12 pounder for .87 last week. My wife told a coworker the next day so he ran by and they were out.
-
I snatched up a 15 lb. Butterball at $0.98/pound at the local Wally World yesterday. It can at times be difficult to find smaller turkeys in this area, and we are now at a count of 10 people for Thanksgiving.
-
Well Costco had the fresh Butterballs in at $0.99/lb, so I picked one up. Smallest I could find was 14lbs. I'll make this one for Tday and still have the other two for Xmas and Summer Tday.
Holy crap that store was crowded today. I'm thinking I won't be going back till after Christmas.

I quartered up Nubs and put her in brine last night. I don’t have all the stuff to scale a whole turkey and pluck so quartering works for me. Nubs was a white broadbreast that came home for free as it was gifted as an escapee from the turkey truck during other farm work. Had pecked its own feet to nubs. She had a good spring and summer where there was actually grass and sunshine. The sidekick though unfortunately turned into a pet. Thing comes up to wherever anyone is to get attention.

So, what is the "shelf life" of a turkey in one's freezer?
Oh, and since Aldi is european, the local progressives love it - altho they occasionally find an excuse to pitch a fit about something - usually about one of the OTHER neighbors who don't speak english...
Gigglesnort.
-
So, what is the "shelf life" of a turkey in one's freezer?
Good Question,
I cooked a turkey that was in the freezer for 6 months, (after x-mas sale ). The turkey tasted fine, and was a treat. Normally, we only cook a full bird on the Thanksgiving.
-
I've went a year before with no problem.
-
So, what is the "shelf life" of a turkey in one's freezer?
Years. Don't ask how many because I don't know; depends how well it is wrapped. Two or three years should be no problem.
-
No issues with turkey shortages at Chez Sump. And with heritage breed no freezer issues to contend with. I just kill one as I need it.

Whats your current bird situation look like, sumpnz?
-
Got 19 turkeys in the yard. 1 tom and 3 hens that are immune from slaughter as they’re my breeders. The rest are for eating.
-
I’ve also got 3 frozen broad-breasted turkeys from the summer processing round.
-
SWMBO is saying there seems to be a glut of supply (or dearth of demand) in turkeys this year. The availability at our local grocery stores is way up on prior years.
-
It's never the governments fault* Because you know, whacked out taxes and regulations, much higher fuel costs, over reaction to C19, a trucking crises, and money printers running overtime could never have anything to do with it.
Americans are paying record high prices for their Thanksgiving turkey while big poultry companies are paying billions in dividends, giving CEOs raises & earning huge profits. These companies are abusing their market power. I’m asking DOJ to investigate.https://t.co/G70KyaUd1Q

*Jan 2017-Jan 2021 excluded. Then it was most certainly the government's fault.

Now now now you government hating Trumptards ought to be grateful you saved 16 cents on your 4th of July cookout thanks to Biden’s exceptional leadership and you can now take that savings and apply it to your holiday meals.
