Quickly losing a generation of talent that can't be replaced.

Just saw that.  =(

Also a generation in which being an "average Joe" in appearance was secondary to one's talent, versus the media packaging prevalent today.

A great singer. I saw him in 2009, and he was still really good.

I dig Joe.  Always have.
And I appreciate him for introducing me to Leon Russell, who is perhaps the coolest dude to have ever lived.

Yeah, I have heard there is almost more money in song writing today than being the performer.

Considering that nearly everyone I know listens to the classic station (country, rock, etc) if they listen to the radio at all, it makes me wonder.  I have been picking up CD's for country songs I listened to on the radio in the 80's.  I picked up John Conlee, Eddie Money, and Ronnie Milsap to name a few this year.  I don't listen to new country much (or at all), but I haven't heard any of it that holds a candle to them.  One thing I notice is that they are not affecting any sort of fake accent.  They are just singing.  Oh well, maybe I am just getting old.

That's because a) your friends are old, b) retro is in right now, in a lot of things, not just music; and c) a lot of people don't know how to find new music, aside from what they're fed by radio and television. c is odd, because finding music outside the mainstream is ridiculously easy right now.

Whatever genre you like, there are still people recording the good stuff in the "classic" style. You just have to find it. Through YouTube or Pandora.com; whatever.

I was sitting in my space onboard the USS Forrestal one saturday night, could have possibly been impaired, when I saw Joe Cocker on Saturday Night Live, with John Belushi doing an imitation of him at the same time. I nearly wet myself.

That's a John Belushi classic! The best Joe Cocker impersonation ever!

Saw him with Susanne Vega and Julian Lennon at an Outdoor Soccer Stadium in St. Wendel Germany in the summer of '89.  Also managed to avoid my Company Commander and her Boyfriend at same.  (I spotted them first and skillfully E&E'd around the danger area back to where were standing.)

IIRC, Joe put on a great 2 hour show.
