http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/13/world/middleeast/destroyer-porter-and-tanker-collide-near-persian-gulf.html?_r=1

USS Porter collides with an Oil Tanker just outside for the Strait of Hormuz.  Tanker left a 10' x 10'  hole in the Porter above the water line.  Damage to the tanker is unknown, but it is under way.  Nobody on either ship was hurt.

The tanker's gross tonnage is ~160,292, deadweight 302477 tons, maximum speed 14 knots. The USS Porter displaces 8300 tons at full load and is capable of 30+ knots.

Hmmm . . . wonder which ship was more agile, and presumably better able to avoid the collision?

I would bet you are right on that one.  That tanker better move because I am a US destroyer!!!

Refueling  ???

I have experienced just this line of thinking. Problem was the huge cargo ship was on auto pilot and the entire crew was asleep. After numerous warnings we did an abrupt about face and the people on the bridge could see someone on the other bridge trying to put their pants on and steer their ship at the same time. Hot shot new LCDR showing off his steady nerve as we faced down the unwary opponent.  ;/

Refueling  ???

We don't refuel from bulk carriers, purpose built military ships. My old ship did once take on fuel from a Japanese tender once though.

Better pic, from the damage on the starboard fwd quarter it certainly doesn't seem like much maneuver was made to avoid, presumably would have been turning to starboard in most situations.

As for fancy radars, life at night in such areas is often excitingly enough done under EMCON or emissions control conditions meaning no radar to tell the world where we are. Sometimes no lights either. Then you rely on a junior guy mad at the world in general, Navy in particular to tell you that one part of the sky is a bit blacker than others.

I was on a ship in a collision. First go to EMCON. Then secure aft lookouts due to jet engine test ops on the fantail. Secure from flight ops. Start doing reactor drills to include crash stops. P.S. Forget to tell cruiser trailing you that flight ops is done, they can stop trailing you as plane guard. Anyway, there is now a CVN-71 class out there, it's about 8 ft shorter and sports one less CIWS mount than a Nimitz class.  ;/ The cruiser was worse for the wear, new bow for it.

I'd like to see a couple more photos, from just a bit farther back. I'm having trouble getting a good sense of just where she was hit. Sort of looks like the tanker rammed her almost amidships. Do you reckon the skipper of the Porter was playing chicken with the tanker? (Like 280's former fearless leader?)

Hmmm ...

Quote
The Japanese-owned, Panamanian flagged tanker M/V Otowasan was coming the other way, just entering the Strait of Hormuz, and the two crashed into one another.

The shipping lanes are very narrow, about two miles wide in each lane. The crash left a hole in the side of the destroyer but no injuries were reported.

Crikey! Two MILES wide is "very narrow" ... narrow enough that a destroyer couldn't dodge a freakin' tanker? Somebody needs driving lessons.

Seeing that little popgun on the deck doesn't exactly inspire awe, does it?  "Train out the main battery!".  So, how do we invest a defended beachhead?  I realize the game is different, and the battle is not likely at the high tide mark, but, gee, imagine seeing a gun-line of those tubs prepping the beach on Saipan.

Well, I wish we could bring back a battleship just as a giant middle finger to anyone who annoys us. That said, a stabilized, auto-loading radar guided 5/54 is going to do a lot of damage. And with some of the new trick rocket assisted projectiles it can reach out and touch someone.

I know it's an urban legend, but it seems appropriate somehow:

Quote
This is the transcript of the ACTUAL radio
conversation of a U.S. naval ship with the Canadian
authorities off the coast of Newfoundland October
1995. Radio conversation released by the Chief of
Naval Operations10-10-95.

Canadians:
Please divert your course 15 degrees to the South
to avoid a collision.

Americans:
Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the
North.

Canadians:
Negative. You will have to divert your course 15
degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

Americans:
This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again,
divert YOUR course.

Canadians:
No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.

Americans:
THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN. THE
SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES ATLANTIC

Really cosmetic damage. Should take a month at lazy shipyard speed. Back in the day when people meant business, 2 days?
I remember we were all happy getting crunched 4 weeks before deployment, figured it was off. No such luck, we were fixed and on the seas on schedule.

The Roberts (FFG-58) went back to sea after a mine hit that cracked the thing in half and left a 40ft hole in the keel. The crew was welding anchors and running cabling on either side of the crack around the superstructure. The Cole went back to sea. In fact, it had one operational screw and the flooding was contained. As a point of American pride they should have got the thing out of harbor flag flying, and under escort or tow to the nearest friendly port, likely Bahrain. Hell, the Belknap went back out.

It's a destroyer, not a battleship. I'm pretty sure even in WW2 destroyers only had 5-inch guns.

And it's a guided missile destroyer at that. It fires these thingies:

Which probably give them a bit more firepower than the destroyers of yore.
