Title: The internet's newest obsession is... tinned fish?
Post by: K Frame on July 12, 2021, 08:17:24 AM
OK, surprised by this one....

But I have to admit, I like tinned fish, from salmon to sardines to anchovies...

Is it really a "thing" or just a wannabe "thing" that people are trying to push?

Then again, there may not be a difference.

Beats the hell out of me, but one of my favorite snacks is a crusty French bread topped with triple cream Brie, oil packed sardines, and capers.

So basically some writer just discovered canned tuna.

To be honest, when it comes to tuna, I've become a huge fan of tuna in the vacuseal pouches.

Loves me some small smoked oysters in the tin.  Smoked salmon, sardines, little baby clams, the list goes on...

Hence the old saying: "Holey Mackerel!"

Alton Brown had a show on this.  Apparently  the tuna in pouches is MUCH better.  He says the canned tuna is always overcooked by necessity.

OK. Now I want a sardine sandwich with mustard. My mom put those in my lunch bag about once a week for like the first thru third grade. I loved them. I sat alone those days, anywhere I wanted.

As a young lad, I learned to enjoy kippers. Still do, on occasion.

My only gripe is that the "sardines in hot sauce" never seem to be very hot. That stuff is tamer than most mild salsa.

Somewhat related: the local media reports that shellfish prices in the PNW will be going up.  Due to the recent heat wave, bajillions of shellfish in the PNW and BC were 'cooked in their shells' on the beaches and will not be available for harvest and breeding.  So enjoy your tinned shellfish before it goes up in price.

You can't wait for them to simply fall from space along with a bowl of petunias.

If a can of whale just showed up one day at the store I'd totally try it.

I had whale sushi in Japan years ago.  Pretty tasty.  Don't know what kind of whale it was.

Dead.

The judges would also accept "raw."

Nice.  Think that's my favorite part of travel,  beyond seeing beautiful new countryside.  I tried to find Hakarl last time I was in Iceland, but struck out.  Didn't try THAT hard,  and the places I asked the locals looked at me like I was mad.  Usual reaction was "why? that stuff is awful".
